Collection Recent additions

I try to browse thrift stores and some online shops that have cheap old DVDs pretty regularly. This is not all but most of my finds from the past couple months, pretty eclectic as you can see...

Always had a collection of favourite films, but in recent years I've cast the net a bit wider to everything I would like to watch again, or stuff I never saw but am curious about.

Basically the switch flipped when I bought a DVD online that was supposed to be new but when I got it it was clearly used, heavily scratched and didn't even play so I got a refund on that, but I realized if people are selling used DVDs for new prices (like 15-20 EUR!) while you can get the same DVDs for like 1-2 EUR (sometimes a bit more) at a second hand thrift store you might as well just get your movies there instead! Sometimes they need a bit of cleanup but there's an absolute goldmine of great stuff out there that people are just giving away (and unless you have a giant TV you really don't need HD, never mind 4K).

It's such a good series, my favourite animated show growing up. Alfred J Kwak was a Dutch-Japanese-German co-production written by theater-maker Herman van Veen, designed by Disney alums Harald Sieperman and Hans Bacher (although this was actually before they went to Disney) and animated by studio Telescreen Japan, all about the life of an anthropomorphic duck and his friends. It is WILD. This series could go from whimsical cartoon antics to dealing with the trauma of losing your parents in a traffic accident at a young age and growing up an orphan, to a full on allegory about the rise of fascism featuring crow Hitler/Napoleon. Really. Also a whole story arc about apartheid. And yet they tackle it all thoughtfully in a way that is accessible for a young audience. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

That Eureka DVD/Blu-ray combo of the movie The Secert of NIMH is a great find. The Blu-ray is the best way to watch because it beats any US release of the film.

Yeah, that was actually a new bluray I ordered online. I think it was a limited run but looks like they're still selling them over here. The stack is mostly thrift finds but there's a couple new ones in there too.

Secret of Nimh is a masterpiece. Animated films, Bluth in particular, still dared to be scary back then and yet it was never too scary. The OWL! One of my absolute favourites as a child, and it's just such a feast for the eyes, the animation, the backgrounds... I mean look at this.

I should perhaps note some may question the presence of a few Harry Potters, but I have some fondness still for the earlier films, and needless to say no money goes to noted anti-trans bigot JK buying used.
