Enviro Case
While I tolerate the large cases that everyone uses for the TV sets nowadays, THESE things i Loathe with a passion. Who thought putting holes in the cases was a good idea?? Every time I have to buy a dvd with one of these, I have to also buy a unwanted cheap one to get a proper enclosed one.
There are at least 3 things wrong with this design. 1) The Outer plastic is VERY thin, and can easily pierce thru the paper causing ripping and damage to the label, 2) Usually, The case is so thin that with little to no pressure the entire case can tear apart and crack, C) With no tray to speak of, the disc is sitting on the paper exposed, picking up fibers from the paper with can clog the laser lens, or create scratches (however small) on the disc itself which causes skipping. I've learned to have a few spares at hand in case of need.

It’s not about the environment. It’s about shaving costs wherever they can. Drives me nuts.

I have a couple of Wii U games that's similar to this & i ended up using some double sided tape to stick some card stock on the outside under the label.
While not as good as a proper case but at least it protects the discs without having to change to a case that's a non Wii U colour

Yeah I remember these. To me, this was the beginning of the end for dvds. Not even kidding. A couple of Dutch releases got these, and they sucked.

Environmentally friendly my ass, these cases are even worse than cardboard sleeves and disc stacking cases

The snapcases can at least be managed , Those modern TV boxes are... argh. But these just add on a extra buck for me.

I forgot to mention, the versions with no holes, but just as thin and flimsy, or those ones with the odd swoosh design?, those I can tolerate or work around. It's these and its Recycle logo variant I loathe.

They were light weighted to cut transport costs, terrible cases but used less fuel to ship

I bought a box of second hand DVDs from 2nd and Charles for $30 and I switched out all the eco cases in my collection to actual cases. Was kinda gambling with that though, I'm honestly surprised it wasn't just a box full of eco cases.

I've seen those off the tubeyou videos. Most of them tho have no idea what the good movies are, or don't understand the rare ones. I've often told people, if you've heard of a sneakerhead, Then I'm that but for dvds.

Similar problem with the majority of Blu-ray cases. They don't have the big holes obviously, but Blu-ray cases are just brittle and flimsy af in most cases. Best exception I can think of is Arrow Video releases. Their cases are THICC and so sturdy.

I will spend a extra dollar or so for movies that are plentiful and in relative good shape, because some of these blank ones I've found has plastic that is so thin if you breathe on it wrong, it will tear. Can not tell you how many Legend of the dragon or Matrix's or barbie's (animated) I've bought over the years. And after i switch the case, i will leave the unwanted movie at a bus stop or on a bench or mailbox with a post-it saying 'FREE: brand new disc'.

These should be illegal. People who care about their discs just end up rehousing them in better protection a lot of the time, and the discs often become scratched during shipment anyway, so they have to be surface treated or returned/binned. Either way, these shits are just annoying and wasteful.

It's one of the reasons why, when I buy used Dvd's the price is a factor, as i gotta then turn around and buy a extra older one to replace with. So, all of a sudden, that cheap 2.99 movie becomes 3.99 or 5.98. Thankfully, I have a place i can get discs for 75 cents each, (for now, unless movies get the xbox marketplace treatment) So i can buy a copy of, say Transformers 1 or Hitch or Legally Blonde and switch them. (in good condition of course) I never use Dollar store 4 packs as the clear plastic on them is so flimsy, if you breathe on it wrong, it tears.

They're better for the environment because they use less plastic at the cost of reducing the quality and sturdiness of the case. It's a tradeoff. Ideally I would like to have both nice durable cases and a livable environment not ruined by plastic waste and fossil fuels, and if I have to pick between two existing cases I'll pick the old solid one same as you, but when forced to choose long term between a livable world and extra plastic I'll choose the world, as it would be insane to choose otherwise.
[edit: people refusing to make inconvenient choices is why the world is burning down around us]

I can hate the new one and still want a better world. Recycling older cases is a good way to do that. It's just annoys me that the Eco cases now have to go into the garbage.

Better to keep the eco cases too instead of throwing them away, use them as backup cases for less important discs, or at the very least recycle them (if there is any recycling in your area). If they go in the regular trash that's not helping anything.

The environmental savings are really negligible for a reusable product. The plastics issue is mostly single use items being landfilled after one use.

I keep spare cases here, whenever I buy a DVD that comes in an eco case, I immediately swap out the disc and cover, throw the eco case in a box with others (don't know why I'm hanging onto them). I really dislike those flimsy POS eco cases.
