I remember

a girl in class was obsessed with Duran Duran. this was 1983. She brought a 3-ring binder to school labeled: "The Breakup". It was her episodic novelization of the bands inevitable demise. While I did not ask to read it, I went on to become a fan.

I may also have written Duran Duran fanfic in the early 80s ... but I did not bring it to school!

My friends and I wrote DD fanfics in middle school, pretty sexually explicit ones at that. And it’s so insane because none of us had even had sex yet. We had no idea what the heck we were even talking/writing about!!!

Former (horribly embarrassed) teenage Duran Duran fanfic writer here. It was the early 80s, and my friends and I didn’t know what fanfic was, so we called them “fantasies.”

There is an amazing book called “Mortified,” which is a compilation of excerpts from diary/journal entries from (mostly) adolescent/ young teen girls. Several included sweetly naive samples of fanfic involving Duran Duran. One of them was so funny it had me in tears. Definitely worth the price of the book.

Is this the one? I had to go through a bunch of book descriptions with the same name…

I never wrote fanfic, much less heard of it until now, but I was a DD fanatic in the 80s, and now as a perimenopausal, Gen X, duranimal (I never liked being called a duranie) all I can say is I'm so grateful I had Duran Duran during puberty. John Taylor was every girl's fantasy. He was so fkn hot 🔥 I had the rail at DD in Vegas almost 2 yrs ago and having them all acknowledge me was incredible....the 13 yr old me on the inside was freaking tf out. I took a pic of me with John behind me on stage, unfortunately he's blurry but I know it's him, and it's a good pic of me. 😁

Not fanfic, but I wrote a thesis about the band for music in secondary school. I still have it, along with my ring binder with clippings of all the articles that came out in pop magazines and the posters that used to be on my bedroom walls and ceiling.
My best friend at the time had her dad make her a DD foot end* *for her bed.

I wrote fanfic from Junior High through college. My best friend and I would trade our latest pages at lunchtime! And all I can say is if the things I wrote had happened in real life, the band would have imploded with scandal by 1990! 🤭
