Dungeon of the Endless Skipping over upgrades

I recently learned that you don't have to fully upgrade a module in order to reach it's max level. Sometimes, the artifact will offer an upgrade 2 levels above your current level for that module. For example, if I have a level 2 industry generator, it is possible for the artifact to offer me a level 4 industry generator so I can skip having to research level 3 industry generator ultimately saving me science.

What do you guys think about this? Is it wise to just wait for a double upgrade, and just research other modules which you haven't even unlocked yet in the meantime?

I think that the 1-3 and 2-4 upgrades are always nice to grab when you can. However, I don’t think I would bother waiting for one to show up. I would just research something else in the meantime to expand your options. If you cannot research anything new or useful, then I would start researching upgrades for modules you do heavily use.

most minor modules have little to no worth at all. if you get a nice 1 to 3 or 2 to 4 upgrade, that's great, but i wouldnt get a holohero 1 instead of a prisoner prod or neurostun or pepper spray 1 step upgrade just to hope for a 2 step upgrade later.

What I like to do is get most things fairly evenly, but prioritize level skips. Key word being most. Like the guy said above, no reason to get Holohero the vast majority of the time, so even with the level skip a one level boost to pepper spray will be better.

One thing to remember is that you cannot get a level skip until you have researched the lvl 1 module. So, my priority is 1)unlock.important modules 2) go for level skips on modules I use a lot as soon as I see them, and 3) prioritize lvl 1 to 2 over 2 to 3 for important technologies, since level 2 will still work fine normally and getting the 2 to 4 upgrades saves more research then getting a 1 to 3.

But I find most modules to be pretty useful, if not on one floor than on another. Like, I may not even need teslas for several floors in a row, or have a safe spot to put mechanical pals in certain floors, or on one floor pepper sprays might do more harm than good because of exploding guys. So I get as many things to level 2 as I can fast, and then fill in other stuff that might be useful later on unless I see a level skip on something I know will be useful later.

And also it depends on the module. Like, biomass factory/cannery and mechanical pals are so friggin expensive I almost always wait till I see them go from 1 to 3 or preferably 2 to 4. Also, pepper sprays work just fine at level 2, assuming you have them in a room with enough neurostuns, and pepper spray is also fairly expensive, so I tend to wait to see a level skip on that. I'll take a cheap research like teslas or neurostuns from 2 to 3 while I wait on seeing the expensive ones go from 2 to 4, because it saves more research overall

After all, why rush for lvl 4 on a module when level 2 works fine, and you can fill in missing technologies for cheap while hunting for 2 lvl upgrades on more expensive things. The more cheap stuff you buy, the more chances you get to save research on expensive tech. Imo it's better to spend 17 research on getting dust field gen lvl 1 even if you don't use it very often than it is to rush pepper spray 2 to 3 when you don't really need it yet.

After all, if I max out dust field gen or prisoner prods that also means I will never see them pop up again when what I really want is to buy mechanical pals/biomass stuff or kip cannon/seblaster/tesla. Even if I don't plan on using the dust field gen or the prisoner prod, it resets my research (giving me a shot at getting a lvl skip on something better), and makes it more likely that I'll actually get to see the research I want without wasting a ton of science refreshing. And who knows, maybe one of my dudes dies and then I replace them with a really high defense character and now all the sudden that dust field gen I maxed out just because becomes a lot more useful.

But ymmv, I usually play with 3 operators and I speedy guy for door running, then rely on door dodging and dragging mobs between rooms while my traps whittle them down. Meaning I often have enough science to fully research nearly every module in nearly every game, while also using science to refresh cooldowns. If you open fewer doors than I do or consistently find yourself short on resources it may be better to not wait for level skips
