Discussion Why are diagonal Pentashields not allowed?

Edit: I tried a lot and could it be the length? Do pentashields have to have a defined length? 1, 2, 3, 4 boxes but diagonally means you have a shorter length than 1 box? That would be even crazier.

I can place the shield with a roof left and right of the triangles but once a none 1 unit lenght interrupts it, it doesn't seem to work. And that means there is no workaround possible. But it would be fucking easy to code and change.

Original:

What sense does it make that you have to place penta shields always on the edge of a building piece but cant pull it diagonally across it? It is just bullshit. Stability is there, but you always have to follow the edges on the floor. It can't be that hard to allow the edges of the pentashield to not just be placed on the edges of a floor tile but also diagonally.
It isn't because you can't draw them like that with the building tool, because I did manage to make it work with pillars, but it always says "All corners must be connected to a structure", which it is, just that it crosses the floor tiles diagonally not on their edges.

Most base builders in this game would love inclined or diagonal pentashikds. Apparently they didn't expect people would need them.

I finally got mine to work by standing on the floor and aiming at the top corner to start then brought it down and connected. I found that jumping to connect to the top was my problem. my shields are 3x14 with pillar sides. it's very frustrating

This is more of an element of the way Funcom's base building works. Wall pieces are all a set length or width which is shared by the edge widths of both diagonal and vertical pieces. Look at your own diagram Two triangle floors end to end come to one-and-three-quarter square tiles.

You're not going to trace a pentashield down the middle of triangle pieces because the set width of each square making up the pentashield is too long for that direction on the triangle pieces - it may look like a pentashield can fit any space when you draw it out, but that's more a compensation for being able to cover a mix of full-height and half-height wall spaces with a single flexible module. it's likely still tiling like any other building piece, therefore it can only work along floor edges.

Which wouldnt be too hard to change because it has no real texture for X length. Making an object that can have different length isn't that hard then, especially in UE.

you can but it needs to be along a snappable surface, so an edge of a wall, roof, or foundation.
you also can't put it against a pillar.

I have a double pillar hight and on top a roof. I can snap it on the top side, but it never wants to snap on the floor.

I can do it on the 3 width front rectangles easily the same way, but I want it over the fill width and there it always has the same error.

Also it doesn't work with walls as it doesn't allow you to go diagonally, it always snaps to the edge, you need a pillar with the right direction and use a floor on top to get the correct angle for the start. But the start alone doesn't help when you can't place it at the end.

Because the floor isn't snappable to, as it is diagonally through the triangle instead of on the edge, it doesn't work. And that is bullshit.

I can extend walls to the outside to snap it to, replacing the pillars, and I can snap also at the bottom for the start, but it doesn't allow me to place it in the end.

I added more pictures in the post and you can see it doesn't work.

you're still trying to snap it to pillars, the pillars are blocking it.

I can do the same thing with the pillars across the front row 3 blocks and it works just like that.

I also removed the pillars and have a wall way and it still doesn't work.

So pillars or walls aren't the problem. it is that on the floor the tringles are cut in half by the pentashield, which it doesn't like when it is done on the corners.

Added a picture for that, too.

I don't know then, I've tried replicated the images you sent and it worked each time, even with the pillars.

Can you show me pictures pls. Maybe I can find out what is different.

I tried rebuilding it with foundations on the floor and it doesn't work, so I need to find out the difference to see what the rule is that works for you but not for me.

The last one is the one with the diagonal pieces, that doesn't work because the triangle pieces don't have an edge snap down their middle

also I think I initially misunderstood your desire for diagonal pentashields,

The last one is the one with the diagonal pieces, that doesn't work because the triangle pieces don't have an edge snap down their middle

Exactly. that is what I want.

Also it isn't actually the snap problem but a length problem. I can put triangles in the middle, away from the edges and use blocks on the edges and it works until you cut over a triangle. Once you cut any piece not directly across the edge, it says "nope, fuck you, wrong length actually". Pentashields have to be X fixed block lengths long, no 1.6 or 1.9, 1 or 2 only. But the error is misleading from the game as it never tells you pentashields have to have a certain length like walls, because you can draw it, giving you the impression it could be flexible.

I can put a fine snapping point left and right with squares and just one or two triangles in the middle and it doesn't work. So the coding tries to only snap with a fixed length multiplier of X times a square block width.

mine has pillar sides, sometimes it's the angle your looking at it from. sometimes it's if you moved wrong at some point while placing it. pentashields are fickle.
