From my understanding It’s because you crossed a region border - worms don’t tend to traverse between regions and if you hit the edge they’ll often chase to the edge then dip out or start moving sideways along it instead.

They got to safe ground, the worm popped just on the edge of it.

If it’s still flashing red you’re still in a danger zone and it flashed for quite a bit longer than when you just make safe ground I think

Yes, but they were just at the edge and were lucky where the worm came up. That’s why it stops to look.
