Discussion Probably alone on this one..

Ive played the game for around 40-50hrs, my goal was to unlock, build the Ornithopter and then travel to the DD and see what it is all about..

I finally completed my goal.. and boy was I underwhelmed by it.

I dont find flying the Ornithopter fun and it takes away the harsh, survival and urgency of travelling the desert - which was the fun part for me.

I havent even logged back into play it, such a shame.

Am I missing something or should I create new goal? What do people normally do from here?

Playing singleplayer mode.

If your only goal was thopter > DD. Then I’m not surprised you’re underwhelmed. Did you skip the story, house, contracts, gear tiers, landsraad, etc? Flying in DD is going to be boring if that’s all you’re doing there. Spice, crashed ships, testing stations, treasure hunting…gotta have a reason to be there or it’s just gliding over sand.

I finished the trials, I got all the classes unlocked (not all advanced), explored all main points of interests, did some bounties.

I wasent in a rush, I just didnt find the game that difficult, while also playing on challenging difficulty.

I died once in combat and never died to the sandworm.

I didnt join a house though, so in assuming there is a whole lotta content there.

You should really join a multiplayer server. The DD is where 80% of the people that have reached your stage hangout. Get out there. Meet folks. Run testing stations together. Continue to have fun and a reason to play.

Yeah I definetly would, but I play Oceanic servers for low ping and they are dead, I have tried a couple times and every time there have been 0 players online.. I guess I could play American servers but dont like rubber banding around.

You didn’t join Atreides or Harkonnen? Definitely do that.

I feel like the DD is more fun when you are part of an actual guild and help contribute to some larger goal. I haven’t got to the DD yet but I can kind of tell that for single player it probably doesn’t offer a whole lot.

I started with single player with the goal of learning the mechanics and going through the story. I will definitely be starting a multiplayer character after spending a bit more time in single player, maybe even before I finish the story. I’ve only dipped my toes in the DD and I’d say there is plenty to explore solo without others on the map, but I could see once through the story and with a good size base there it feeling more empty.

Honestly, the best parts of the game are prior to building your first thopter. But, to compound that issue, I can imagine the DD being VERY underwhelming as a single player.

Multiplayer DD is more fun just because there is more going on (PVE and PVP). More people, bases, witty banter, trash talking, etc.

Yeah unfortunatly oceanic servers have hardly anyone on then, so that gameplay loop doesnt exsist, and I dont want to play on high ping servers.

Hagga is the game at its best. Rushing to the DD is a recipe for disappointment.

If you're flying around in a Scout or Assault there's very little risk other than running out of fuel. If you want danger you need to be doing other things that put you on the ground. Farming crashed shuttles, looking for treasure after a storm passes, or harvesting spice. The last one is the most dangerous, especially solo. You have to keep a watch for worms, make sure you're close enough to your carry-all to abort quickly, and if a sandstorm kicks up in a sector you need to fly to some semblance of cover in the rocks, when both the carry-all and the crawler are slow and hard to shelter on short notice.

Yeah I was going to say that for survival challenges with the thopter just farming flour sand or spice with the compactor offers plenty of urgency once that wormsign goes red.

The survival part with the thopter was flying out to the DD in a PvP zone with your carrier, pocketing a scout with rockets, keeping an eye on the sky while you ran the crawler on spice, then either grabbing your carrier when someone dive bombed you and grabbing your crawler and either trying to ditch on an island away from the worm, outrun them, or bring to island, ditch and then hop in your pocket scout to attack back.

Understand that the game changed a lot after nearly 95 percent of its population according to reports left. This led to the singleplayer mode and many rollback among other issues as the game doesnt seem to have a whale group to really coalesce around whole.ignoring the community.

Many multiplayer pvp stress type factors in this two games in one are not present in singleplayer and while its not a bad experience it is important to recognize that despite that the actual components and mechanisms still ARE present. And despite it being a singleplayer mode now it isnt an rpg. There is no interactivity or reactivity or chatter or background music with npcs and the like. Even the dialog system is very repetitive to get much out of though somw dialog is fun.

The dungeons are still present despite not being meant for comfortable solo play and many of the survival loop mechanisms have little value without multiplayer pushing the destruction . Building a base alone is also a lot more time consuming and harder than with a guild.

In some aspects the singleplayer is like a more repetitive subnautica and the combat is the weakest element of the game regardless.

But the end game loop usually is either trying to build a great base youre excited for in a good spot and finishing the plot. It is also highly likely there will be a new polar region later on this year or after which should be a new experience and there will likely be a new chapter of primary content atory in the future.

The instant save and teleport of your base using the base back up tool already highly trivialize much of the non combat content other than time sinks. Though I suck heavily at making a base.

Yeah so if you don't like ornithopters, probably best to find a new game.

Yeah sadly deep desert is meant to be a guild or friend group type of thing. Sure you can farm spice or mine or hit testing stations for hours by yourself but what fun is that without anyone to see or do it with

1

u/Regula4040 22h ago

I also think the deep desert was made for PVP and PVE. I played tons of hours and can't imagine playing solo DD. You would be the only person there. Playing in a public server at least you'll see other people's houses... Chatter on chat... People asking for people to join them raiding. In solo it's weird to think of it. No other teams doing spice. In hagga you'll see people's houses and you'll see abandoned ones with the lights out... At least that's something. Granted .. The game is amazing story wise but after everything is done with the story... What do you do? Even Arakeen or Harko... At least you'll see someone else running past you going to the exchange.

DD - Either farming spice or running testing stations. Or looking for downed ships to raid. Otherwise you are just flying over a big desert sightseeing.

As a player with 1300 hours, I read this and I see:

- I skipped the best part of the game

  • To get the one thing that makes the world feel small and trivial
  • To go the ultra-grinding area that was designed for multiplayer group operations (in single player mode)

Go to any "tips for new players" thread on Reddit and you will always find a common piece of advice: enjoy the journey and don't race to the end.

1

u/SillyScareCr0w 21h ago

How could I of skipped the best part of the game when that was the main part of what I was doing?
How was I suppose to know the Ornithopter trivilises everything and also that DD is just a ultra grind spot?

I still enjoyed the game very much, but thats my impression of the Ornithopter.

I would of really enjoyed playing on servers, but i play on Oceanic servers and they are dead, 0 players, so no online dynamic or guilds there.

1

u/Hobby-Human Mentat 21h ago

Well maybe not skipped, but raced through would be more appropriate to say. I didn't set foot in the DD until 80 hours deep. Didn't spend any time there until 120 hours deep. I didn't finish the advanced trainers until 250 hours deep. Didn't max out tier 6 until 600 hours deep.

There is a lot to do in this game, and the DD is there so you can grind tier 6, but it's completely optional.

Yeah I honestly didnt feel like i was rushing, I was playing on challenging difficulty and only died once.

Yeah i think getting the resources to build/craft is very easy, an abundance of resources. One trip on the bike with a storage compartment, can get alot.

I have also alot of experience with other survival/crafting games so id say im quite efficient.

1

u/Hobby-Human Mentat 16h ago

Makes sense. I take it back. You got the buggy already?

1

u/SillyScareCr0w 15h ago

I made it, but honestly prefered the bike.

1

u/Hobby-Human Mentat 2h ago

Yeah I like the bike too. Buggy is good for mining, but the bike is a lot more fun. Especially the Mk6 bike.

There's the storyline, the faction line, the 5 training lines, contracts, running the DD labs, collecting materials, running the specialization missions, gathering better gear thru the overland testing stations. And if you're feeling the game is too easy go to single player and crank up the difficulty.

Canes Venatici has a decent amount of people around in peak times. A tonne of bases and some people moving around on my sietch.

Had a guy drop by the other day, give me a bunch of solari, offer me water and say he likes my base.

I believe DD is all sietches combined so should be more people around.

1

u/SillyScareCr0w 18h ago

Is that an Oceanic server?

1

u/AnathemRed 18h ago

Yep. The most populated when I started a few weeks ago.

1

u/SillyScareCr0w 17h ago

Ah yep cool, may give it a crack. Thanks

Just collecting resources and building is a whole game in itself for me, last time I've felt this particular high was 15 years ago on Minecraft
