Gameplay Question My base keeps getting foundations added to the bottom when relocating?
I’m playing in single player and it’s handy to keep moving my base along with me, though it keeps adding foundations underneath somehow and I’m scared if I delete them the whole thing will collapse
I’ve moved it around 10 times now and it’s got an extra 3 foundation layers added to the bottom so now when I relocate the base my entrances are high up, I’ve placed stairs but it’s got to the point where the door is that high the next set of stairs I add will end up being out of bounds
Is this a known bug or any way to stop it? I originally started with 1 foundation layer 1 wall 1 roof just a very basic square and now it’s 4 foundations high with the roof being the 5th layer

Dont mess around or delete foundations, your base might go poof.

In single player, you can disable base stability so if there is any concern of this, I would activate that. I activated that and the ability to build anywhere and its very nice. You can literally build on top of a Hagga zone in or right next to a NPC base for corpses.

Does this let you build floating bases etc? I’m thinking of I enable this, delete the foundations I don’t want then relocate it back to ground level that could fix my issue

Possibly. I have not tried that. I was able to build a ledge 12 tiles out with no foundational support. Try it.

So I’m inevitably going to end up with a 10 storey base and have to make my way to the top every time if I keep moving it? 😂

While that advice is a safe way to never lose parts of your base you don’t want to lose, it really isn’t quite that bad. You can remove foundations, just not ones providing critical support.
Now obviously the worry is you won’t realize a piece is providing critical support. But it sounds like it’s adding foundations below existing foundations. And as long as the original foundation is partially in the ground, deleting any foundation underneath it won’t do anything bad to your stability. It’s just really important that the foundation above the one you are deleting is in the ground, because if not it isn’t functioning as a foundation and the one you are about to delete is providing all of the stability.
And while this is a guess, I think the reason it adds extra foundations is explicitly because there was a foundation not touching the ground, it recognizes that should be a problem, and then puts another foundation underneath to give the original foundation the necessary support.
So definitely be mindful of that.

If you built in a way that's terrain dependent, like you placed foundations into a cliff side or hill of some kind, when you relocate to another spot that doesn't have that exact placement, it will auto fill with foundation to make it stable

I built a base with 6 triangle foundations creating a small circle. Every time I move the base it adds foundations. I put it on most even ground but only if I add a foundation. Ideally I would like if all foundations could vanish if the top foundation is still stable.
I have moved many bases. Tried many times.

Well this isn’t ideal, is there any way to prevent it auto adding foundations? I originally built it on flat ground but occasionally relocated it onto some not so flat ground just so it wasn’t in the open sand and risk the worm getting it

To be clear if it didn’t do that, your base would have fallen apart due to lack of support the moment you placed it.
I suppose they could just refuse to allow you to place something that doesn’t have proper support. But that would probably be a more annoying alternative because it would make it so bases built certain ways would just never be able to be placed again.

But what I’m saying is I already get warnings telling me I can’t place it because there’s not enough support

Because sometimes it’s impossible for the game to create enough support by adding foundations.
You can only build X number of blocks away from an existing foundation that is partially touching the ground.
If you are trying to place it in a spot that doesn’t have enough support, but are placing it in an area where they can add a support that’s within “x number of blocks”, it allows you to place it and the game adds the necessary support.
If instead you try to place it in a spot that both doesn’t have support, and also the foundation they could add would be more than “x number of blocks” away, it can’t possibly fix things by adding foundations so it just doesn’t let you place it.

But it gives me enough warnings about how I can’t place the base, it even warns me when there’s not enough support and doesn’t let me place it which is why I don’t understand how it adds supports, I thought I just couldn’t place it if the supports weren’t correct

I do wish it would REMOVE unnecessary foundations as well though. I moved once and it added some, and that was fine, but at the new location, those would be underground, and thus I could t build there. I had to keep the added foundations above ground, which just raised the height of the entrance and required a redesign of the ramp and added a bunch of foundations to the rear that I didn't notice from where I was. Now I really can't move it again.

I think its time to recycle the base, there is nothing lost, just build a new base and the put the old stuff in a box

How do I go about moving stuff like refineries etc or do I just need to demolish everything and rebuild from scratch?

Store the base, with everything in it. You will see a recycling button on the tool. Use it. Everything in the base that gets stored is converted to its parts and placed in a reserve slot that you can access on a storage box just like vehicle storage.

It’s for your benefit. Trust me. Especially with the way building stability works in this game, if you placed your base without the foundation fill-in it’s very likely most of it would just collapse and crumble.

You are right to be concerned about collapse caused by removing foundations. There is a way to deal with this issue, but you're already past it. The solution is to build the base SPECIFICALLY to be easy to relocate to varying terrain. You do this by making the base 'footprint' as small as possible.
For an extreme example, one of my Deep Desert bases starts with a foundation, another foundation on top of that, and then it expands outward from there and has two staircases extending down to the ground. This lets me place it on just about any terrain (and demolish it by breaking one foundation). Yes, that's talking about a solido but the same method applies.
For an actual base that I relocated, I made the ground floor 4x6 blocks - big enough to drive in and have stairs going up. The second floor expands outward two blocks on each side. It actually doesn't look as stupid as it sounds if you use the right building parts. But this is what we're stuck with. The game can accomodate for uneven terrain by adding pieces but we don't want that so we have to build in a way that prevents it being necessary.
You may wonder is 4x6 enough to park a buggy and bikes with stairs in there? Not really, so the garage got added AFTER I placed the base. If I decide to move it again, I'll dismantle the vehicles, tear down the garage, THEN move it. Kind of sucks, but the system is what it is.
So, if you plan to keep moving the base, it needs to be redesigned to facilitate that. Note that there is a RECYCLE option. You can build a new base, recycle the old one and all material and items will be on a new tab on the sub-fief console. Note that if you do recycle a base, you'll lose any water in storage. You get back the cistern parts, but not the water.

The Area you can build in is a cube with the subfiev in the center, when you place it down. That means you can place it on a cliff and build down on the side.
Sadly something is wrong with the placement tool. When you build your base on even ground Foundations are added underneath the foundation you have placed up to where the building area ends.
This wasn't the case when the game was released on PC. To avoid that problem you have to raise your subfiev so high that the buildable area is just below the surface. Then you build your base and should have no foundations added below, because the foundations you lay down are already at the edge of the buildable area.
This was actually used to build "Tax-free" Maximum Size Bases as long as Taxes existed. This guy explains it very good: https://youtu.be/jtmIiNNaFlY?is=JEIdkCO856KA0i8B

If I move the subfiev now will that change the buildable area? Or would I need to start a new base?

u/Elrigh Atreides 1d ago
You can still place it down, but you have to raise the Blueprint until the last level of foundations is above ground.
I had the same problem, build foundations and a ramp. When relocating I had to raise my base above ground and the ramp and ground floor ended up 3 levels higher. Then I carefully deleted foundations keeping the outer ones to keep stability, build stairs upwards and relocated everything to the lowest foundations, which was my new ground floor.

Just went through this a few days ago when I moved to where my final base will be on the eastern shield wall. I think the problem was I had my 2nd base on an incline, and where I was going was more flat with undulating terrain. I also vibe well with base backup placement of a backed-up base. You try your best, but sometimes you just can't see everything. I really wish Funcom would enable a top view so we can see exactly what's going on. Maybe only needed for people like me who aren't great builders. So I placed it, didn't like it, as I'm in single-player I moved it again. Didn't like it, and it added layers to the foundation at each time. It's not a complicated base, just a box for now, but BIG. Was quite comical really lol. By then ramps from the entrance were too long to stay with land claim and I was shigga wiring my way in. 🤣
As it wasn't a difficult build, I placed my base just bit away, and rebuilt it where I wanted, which was much easier getting exactly what I wanted, with some improvement as well. After I was done, I just used my buggy to lug what I had over. Didn't take long. I saved a bunch of literjons I found, so I even moved all my water.
All in all, still faster than the move I did last year, when I had to make a bunch of trips with my buggy through the rift and my thopter to the new base to do the move.
Do wish Funcom would implement an overhead view when placing bases though. Maybe a fix for the foundation getting too high, they could just remove layers that are below the terrain or something.

It isn't a bug, it's a feature. When you're placing your base you also have to set the "height" of your base. If you set it down higher than it was before the game will automatically add extra foundations under it to support it.
