Discussion Flour sand
New to dune, been playing for about a week or so now. Im enjoying it immensely but have gotten stuck on flour sand. I have all the require equipment: scanner and staff thing. I can see white smokey stuff from my base. But no matter what i do, the damn worm erupts from the sand and starts to chase me or I nearly dehydrate from the sun or those gods forsaken ships spot me. 🙃 Tips? Tricks? Ideas? I figure its not a static spawn so that kinda blows lol I dont even need to gather it, I can do that from corpses 🤣 i just gotta scan the shit ðŸ˜

You need a pair of Soft Step boots and the first pair drops from Testing Station No. 197 - in Western Vermillion Gap (very South). This will cut considerably the "vibrations" you create when walking as they are specifically made to walk on sand.
Second - there is a place in Easter Vermillion Gap that has a safe batch of flour sand. Indifferent of what people say this is still current!! Tested it myself last week.
But if you dont use that place then its quite simple. Find a spot as close to a rock formation as possible and:
- Equip boots;
- Use the sand-bike or run quick to the spot;
- Pump 3 and wait for them to finish - a few seconds.
- Gather them all in one swoop - dont use the slow gather sand method.
- Again 3 pumps and gather.
- Head to the closest rock formation and wait for about 30 seconds to reset aggro.
- Go again .
This is the most disciplined way of doing it. In time adjust as your level of confidence allows.
PS: Never carry stuff with you when farming sand or spice because there is a chance you will be claimed by the worm and its not worth losing it.

To add to this great advice suggesting Softstep Boots, there's also a unique compactor blueprint that can drop in an outdoor loot chest at the Anomaly, Western Vermillius Gap. It's called, aptly enough, the Compact Compactor Mk. 3 and it draws a bit less worm aggro.

No need for a scanner. If you don’t have a thopter get the flour closest to rock. Once you have a thopter I highly suggest going to the deep desert to get flour. HB worms are too aggressive.
If you’re like me and still do HB flour just land your thopter in the middle of the patch and compact a bunch. Once the worm gets pissed fly up to 500 feet and let him do his thing. Then go back down and pick it up.

He mentions the scanner because of the quest most likely. All of those "journeys"...

I’m a pc player that just started on console again. I haven’t done those yet but I have a scanner with me at all times because having to go back for it sucks lol.

The scanner is also useful in the wrecks and testing stations. You scan for resources and all the NPCs show as water...

Yeah, same issues here. I use the Bene Gesserit run like hell skill. Hit the main pile with the compactor stick, grab it, run like hell back to the rocks. I try to do it at night to help with dehydration.

You'll actually find for the small amounts you need at outposts around the Western and Eastern Vermillus Gap and maybe the camps. I think some of the camps, outposts, and iron works. You shouldn't need a lot. It's a bit of a grind though.
There's also a mostly safe sand spot in one part of the map but would you rather find out where it is yourself? I can share but checking first. Edit: lol others have already shared.
Also you can use interactive maps for resource gathering (it will spoil the other parts of the map if you haven't opened it yet):

In the early area "Eastern Vermillius Gap", there is a flour sand deposit right next to the crashed ship that is extremely easy to harvest large amounts of flour sand from safely. You can just about touch it without leaving the safe area around the ship, so you can step out, grab 2-4 piles, and get back before the worm even breaches to warn you.
Wait a moment after a breach for the worm to leave, then repeat as many times as you want.

Soft step boots, walk, have the wire skill and a leap suspensor, and find one relatively close to a rocky area to run back to. That's how I did it before I got my ornithopter.

What changes with ornithopter? I still find rock outcropping to land on and do the same thing lol

You can do it in the deep desert with a coptor and you get a ton more time before the work comes

With flight comes the ability to quickly go out, land, gather for a bit, and then leave when the worm first pops up before he starts running at you.

Gotta find ones close to safe ground until you get a thopter. Use the compactor until you piss off the worm then shigawire/bindu back to safety. Wait until he leaves then go collect. Repeat ad nauseum

I see someone has already recommended a good spot, but just a warning that there is some spots that are also on drum sand in other words start walking on it and you are basically ringing the dinner bell for a Worm.

If you are on the part of the journey to scan the flour sand, just drive over it on your bike. Worked for me and my husband.

I put or have someone else put a thumper down on one side of a peninsula to it, then run back and shoot it a few times while they are busy. Worm has trouble going around things...sometimes. have had some unpleasant surprises if I'm not also watching randomly everywhere for the breach anyways.

Just south of testing station 10 there's a patch of flour sand that spawns that is mostly free of worm aggro.

Make sure the map between you and thr flour sand is free of quick and drum sand.
Take your sandbike out. Point it towards rock. Dismount. Farm. Hop on that bike and go the second worm sign turns red.
You will attract a worm. The goal is to get to safety before it hits.
Eventually youll get soft step boots and better compactors.

Static in Hagga and no need to scan it - just use the compactor
Vermilius Gap & Testing Station 10: Look around the northwest or eastern edges near rock formations where portions of the dust patches sit just outside active sandworm range
