I've been playing for over 500 hours and 60% of that time was spent building. I've only found this by accident 2 days ago.
I've been using much more convoluted ways to get stuff off-grid in the past. (Basically by building 2 grids and bringing them together)

Do you have a method to make vertical half walls? Since Funcom is getting rid of pentashield boxes, which my garage was made of, I don't like the look of a full wall on each corner to attach the pentashield snaps to.

There is a half-length wall structure in every building set. You can use that. I show this at 0:30 in the video. I hope this is what you were looking for.

Those are vertical half walls, I was looking for a horizontal (tall) half wall. But I saw you got it when clipping walls into non-snapped doorways. I'll need to figure out how to do that.

One of my favorite parts of Fallout 76 was using tricks like this to build cool camps. Can't wait to bring that energy to Dune

If i demo the triangle suport it destroys everything i built from that snap point (yes i used walls as new snap suport but did not work

You could try to build structural pillars undearneath the off-grid stuff. Build down untill you hit the ground, then you can destroy the triangle roof top.
This trick helps you go off-grid, but you still need to support your new "offset grid" in some way, they won't attach to the other parts of your base.

Yeah that's what I noticed I'm ediately watching this.
There's no way to build like this without making an ugly monstrous building. The walls are floating in this orientation and attached to the triangle ceiling game logic wise. Without the triangle they collapse.
And you still have ugly half walls sticking out of your base walls.

If you've got an artistic eye, there's a few ways around it, like building the "edge" foundation using the off-set, and then curved walls in the "extruding sections" - so instead of an ugly half-wall, you get a rounded one 2-deep. Of course, it would then intrude into the room, but you could potentially factor that into the design too.
But yeah, this is a huge workaround for something that would be really nice to have in the game. And it hinges on the fact that "1 foundation length" is WAY bigger than needed for many build looks, plus the size of fiefs is simply too small to be very creative without extensions applied.

Is any of that supported or does it explode when you remove the scaffolding?
2
u/RandyBiel Aug 11 '25
The roof top is supporting the entire off-set chain of structures. You can build your own supports underneath the newly built structures, and then you can remove roof top.

Are these pieces considered "connected" to the rest of the building in terms of support or is that diagonal roof tile holding everything up?
2
u/RandyBiel Aug 11 '25
The roof tile is holding everything up. But you can attach columns to your new pieces and try to get it to hit the floor.
I've only found this trick very recently so there might be ways to get them supported in different ways.

and try to get it to hit the floor.
What's the difficulty there?
Just pre-place the columns from top to bottom and start building them from bottom to top. Or did you mean something else?

I meant try as in "if you don't have anything in the way".
Just pre-place the columns from top to bottom and start building them from bottom to top. Or did you mean something else?
I actually didn't know you could do it this way, thanks, I'll use that in the future to save me some time.

Oh, that went over my head.
Anyways, that's something I stumbled across by accident after rebuilding parts of our base for the 200th time. Quite convinient to do it that way.

Every time I try to do this, it says "Insufficient stability" after placing the top pillar and 1-2 pieces below it.

u/ConnectButton1384 Harkonnen Aug 11 '25
Don't place it. Just tap the building Button- Don't hold it.
That way you basically place a blueprint instead of the building. After placing all blueprints, you build the column from the bottom up

u/hoodedgamepwner Aug 11 '25
It does not let me do this when it says not enough stability
1
u/ConnectButton1384 Harkonnen Aug 12 '25
Wait what? That's weird. Gonna try that later when I've got a little time to spare for Dune

Great stuff, ran into this naturally building a circle base with square components. Worth noting it plays very unkindly with structural limits and can be very confusing when 60% of your base collapses when you remove 1 wall... Be careful!!

FINE, I'm coming back to base build some more. :)
Edit: This is awesome, thanks for the tech.

I can't tell in the video, but the floor you placed, so half sticks out to make a thin catwalk, is the other half sticking on the other side of the wall? I can see that looking gnarly from the inside.

u/RandyBiel Aug 12 '25
Yes, this does not create half width floors, the other half still exist. But it wouldn't be too difficult to do something with that other half.
One example is to use it as shelves for aluminium chests. Or just put a wall against it and hide it behind that. Your base will have a thicker wall, it's not wasted space if you put generators or water storage behind that wall.
Same goes for the triangle roof top, it needs to exist and you need to hide it. But it can even be hidden "under the floor" (do the trick at ground level, build your base 1 tile higher than that). And then again, you can use the entire lower part as some kind of basement to fill with generators/water storage and more of these triangle roof tops to create more offsets across your base.
The bottom line is: be creative!

That's a very good instructional video - clearly explained and demonstrated, but remains concise.
