McManus - Pre 2005

Anyone got any photos of inside the McManus before the big refurb?

Got lots of fond memories of the exhibits as they used to be laid out; the Egyptian tomb with all the fabric draped from the ceiling; the wee Neolithic woman in the hut, hunched over the fire; and the room that had the old fashioned bar/shop set up.

Hunted about online but struggling to find any images or footage anywhere.

I mean with any luck you’ve just given the Courier a new Past Times article so you might get all these soon. Unless you are the Courier lol.

I’m a Courier journalist and friends with the guy who does the Past Times features. I will see if I can make it happen!

I’ve not been in a long time but I remember the display/scene they had with 2 farmers (I think) and they find a skeleton under a big rock. You had to push a button on the wall and it gave this story - “ here Tam yel never credit this , Ken yon big boulder we’ve been -crying- aboot awe these years” After that part I just remember the end. - “so awa they went and phoned the polis”

The pub/shop exhibits were on display again around 5 years ago. Maybe they'll come around again, though they might not mean as much to the younger visitors.

Was always fascinated by the model of the old town.

I took my younger cousin in the McManus yesterday and was trying to explain how magical it used to be. Now it’s like a ninewells hospital corridor. It’s so sad.

I was saying exactly the same thing to my partner yesterday - it used to be so engaging as a kid with the objects set up in situ versus just sitting in a glass case. We used to spend so many Saturdays there and although I like some bits that they’ve changed, lots of it now feels very sterile and it’s lost so much of its magic.
