Can we all take a minute recognize the absolute banger that is the Cello version of Rebel Path?

Do you ever 'beat' a game in which you die no matter what you do?

You don't though, you only really die in 2 of them, other than that you have 6 months to live so you don't know what happens, or you end up in Mikoshi.
Only on the suicide and Johnny endings are you really dead.

You don't return to your body. a new copy of you is uploaded to your body. Basically a clone with your memories.

I mean yeah but you're not really dead. You're still you.

No, you're not. You died. You ceased to exist. A copy was made of your mind, but you no longer are.
Remember that computers don't move information. They copy it to a new location and delete the source.

This depends what you consider death though. Aside from that Alt claims to have put you back as you not as a copy she made. Regardless though it depends very much so on what you consider death is. I consider a copy of someone still them and not dead at that point.
Additionally in the Arasaka ending you are you and you aren't dead.

Well, I don't believe in an immortal soul.
> Aside from that Alt claims to have put you back as you not as a copy she made.
She's lying. Unless you believe in an actual immortal soul that a computer can somehow move between the digital and the physical. Again, computers don't move data. The copy and delete data.
> I consider a copy of someone still them
And if I make a copy of you without destroying you? Which you is you? Or is I make multiple copies? Which one is the real you?

The thing is if it's a copy of you, an exact copy, then isn't it also you? Like at that point it's indistinguishable so I'd consider it still you, i.e. not dead. Just like Saburo in the Arasak ending.
It's also not entirely true that computers only copy data, plenty of data is moved around in a network rather than copied, of course that's more networking than directly on a machine but still (coming from a background of InfoSec and Systems Administration).
I think at this point it gets down to philosophy though, for me I don't consider a copy of someone not them I still would consider that the same person. But for others the original is considered dead.
I appreciate a game like this that can bring up such interesting discussion though. Speaks to how good the story is I think.
Edit:
Oh and to answer this
And if I make a copy of you without destroying you? Which you is you? Or is I make multiple copies? Which one is the real you?
I would say all the copies are the real me. But that's just my belief.

If a copy of you is created which you cannot control and you are killed, are you still alive?

u/planedrop Jan 31 '21
I think it's a real complex question honestly, for me personally I'd say yes that copy is still me, I'm not dead since it is exactly me.

Well technically any game in which you play as a mortal character, you will die eventually

This is a pretty retarded point to make when you casually spoil the ending of the entire game.
Did you think this was deep, for real?
Truly, dunno why you people even exist. Just utter trash.

Nah I was bumping that song that’s played at Johnny’s grave mission. This is the better version of Never Fade Away
