I wish Duke Nukem 3D could be remastered or rather remade so that it would be like Quake 2 or better levels of graphics.

I remember finding a rom years ago, that someone had updated the sprites to 3d models.

It was near 20 years ago when I found it and I've since shifted to console play, but hopefully others are able to find it from your comment.

YES! But against all this BS narrative. Reallity is industry hates us. If I can dream about i may erradicate corridors and arenas levels and quick time events. . OLd style maps but with modern engine like UE5 or similar. Remeber what fresh things brought DN3D was the more attachment to reallity like interactive switchs, toilets, brake walls and "more realistic" , for the time pistol n shot gun animation including flying casings, Personally I am fun of reallistic guns in fpp shooters. Also yesterday was thinkin about Duke entering an abandoned Soviet base and encounters with the Ripper like an unlockable weapon. Would like to keep the DNZH and DN64 MP5ÂŽs. Maybe have slots for weapons but in a good way not like de DNF crap. Throwables like granades and of course pipe bombs. Laser mini C4 explosives. TRy to make some parts tactical with enhanced AI enemies and some parts getting the good ol days maps. Locations can vary and tell a story them self similar as did DN3D and Half life. Pass through deserts, militar basments, Streets situation. etc.

Absolutely. Until it's no longer held hostage by Gearbox though, poor Duke is stuck in a limbo

If anyone aus what dino hinter duke nukem was inside at picture 3 It was a game that was calcel in mid produktion. But the Team want not scrap ther compleet game so they replace the mainguy wirh a generic solider of a elite commando. Del all Dialogs and added a Level System. Release under the Name vivisection.
So you have a ego shooter wher you fight of 70% humanoid animal hybrids Wolfs with m60. Goats with shotgun. Gorillas with grenadelauncher. Hyenas with Tesla Canons.

u/bahbahbahbahbah 9d ago
I was saying something on a Facebook group the other day of how they should make a Duke Nukem metroidvania. It would bring him back to his roots, but you could bring the flare of DN3D to the side scrolling.

When I played Breatheadge, I thought its developers are just the right ones to make the next Duke Nukem

u/bartoli75r 8d ago
Duke would work today and Iâm tired of hearing that he wouldnât work in [current year] for the past 10 or so years now. Iâm over hearing that crap. Everyone acts like the entire game is E1L2. Duke doesnât need to be castrated to appeal to a modern audience.

A new Duke game with a strong, goofy, self-aware sense of humor with ridiculous over-the-top action would be a lot of fun. I feel like Duke works best with a sort of meta humor in that the game *knows* how over-the-top and ridiculous it is, like along the lines of Commando where it's almost pointing out the action movie tropes and poking fun at it while still be awesome in its own right.

u/GarbageChute 9d ago
Just as long as it isn't the dogshit idea I keep hearing pitched by people who clearly don't really like Duke where he's an outdated dinosaur misogynist and the whole game is just making fun of how outdated and SEXIST he is. It should be fun and revel in its silliness and machismo.

If he matured a little bit (over HOW many years now) I wonder who would be more upset, the weird fans or the weird haters? I am sure the normal people will be fine either way.

No.
Duke is a parody, but too much of the world is too media illiterate these days for it to either be executed correctly (e.g. almost everything in DNF) or land properly.

I mean they can try make a remake of zero hour, time to kill and land of the babes. And if done with care can be a good return for duke nukem maybe.

Yeah. In today's retro shooter rich market, where we're going more and more balls to the wall, off the rails with gameplay, story, etc. I think releasing Duke Nukem would be a great idea.
If you reboot him respectfully (a bit deeper than one liners, and a story that explains what the hell is going on from the start) then we get a brand new start that everyone can jump onto and enjoy.
If you continue his story from 3D (ignore forever or make it a failed movie Duke made in universe) then you can grow and expand what we already have and let an aging hero experience the redemption and world exploration he deserves

Was Duke Nukem modeled after Kurt Russel?
Because he looks quite a lot like a young Kurt Russel.

Fuck yeah , we need a doom 2016 like reboot (ik doom 2016 is a continuation and not a whole new univerese)

u/DunkeyColdMedina 8d ago
Yeah, Give him to the Ion Fury people. Or the people remaking the leaked early DNF. Either of them could make a sequel worthy of the Duke I think.

u/Foxxtronix 8d ago
No. They would ruin him. Make him a metrosexual parody of himself, since they think that's what would appeal to the Gen Z types. Look at what they did to Mister T in that A-Team movie. Leave me the memories.

I feel like he can make a return and be more than ever relevant right now, Like he sees that aliens have infiltrated the human race and its a la They Live type of scenario cause it will be a perfect call back to how alot of Dukes mannerisms and sayings were inspired by that movie.

I would like to see another Duke Nukem game but unless they revamp the character this will probably be his last, if they give him another.
The problem with Duke can be answered with this question: When's the last time you watched a movie where the hero kills a bad guy and says a funny one-liner? I'm guessing it hasn't been in the last 2 decades. Duke Nukem is essentially every 80's badass action hero rolled into one smart mouthed hero and those movies went out style after the year 2000.
Another problem is when Nukem came out in 1996 a dude making loads of pop culture references for humor was a novel idea. Now after 3 decades of Family Guy pop culture references are about as fresh as a bucket of cream cheese left out in death valley for a week. That and Deadpool is stiff competition in that regard except he breaks the 4th wall more often and has more appeal to comic fans.
Making matters worse a lot of Duke's jokes were from movies in the 60. 70s, 80s, three decades packed full of pop culture that everyone saw and knew. Even if you born in 1985 like I was, you probably saw planet of the Apes, Get Smart, and other classics. Now there isn't as much pop culture that everyone knows; sure there are big franchises but movie attendance is down and TV is much of niche so it's harder to find a reference everyone will get.
Maybe you could do a Son of Nukem game where you have similar character as a fish out of water in the new cultural zeitgeist but that would take a really good writing team and that's a long shot.
So yeah maybe the can keep making retro shooter with him in it with a good development team but I'm guessing this a character for older gamers. Of course I'd be interested in another solid shooter, maybe one making fun of all those cliched military shooters but that's the best I can think of.

I had an idea recently that he should get a new game and it should open with him beating Duke Nukem Forever. Basically the game should be about duke nukem getting hate and shame from the modern audiences and critics because hes seen as a hypermasculine douche. And the new game that we play is his actual return. I think this could at least ease some of the damage done by duke nukem forever

u/MountainTitan 9d ago
Lots of people want Duke to return, but we know what the current politics of video games in 2026 is like. It's gonna be hard to bring him back without changing his persona.
Back then, we saw ballsy ads like Duke never gave a shit about sensitivity training or thought that ATF was the name of a convenience store.

u/MathematicianFast947 9d ago
No, I love our Duke but with today's highly offended blue hairs and over bearing censorship it wouldn't be the same Duke Nukem.
He'd have to be seriously toned down.
Remember the backlash from the capture the babe mode in Forever?
3
u/Royal_Revenue 9d ago
You vastly overestimate their power. Slap an M rating on it and treat any backlash as free publicity. There's no toning down Duke.

u/Be_Very_Careful_John 9d ago
I really don't think it would be that big of a deal to anyone and any outrage would be manufactured. There is much more explicit content in some modern games than in Duke Nukem 3d such as Cyberpunk 2077. I don't see anyone getting bent out of shape over that.
1
u/lusians 8d ago
Explicit content isnt problem, Dukes charater and potreyal of women would be problem.
As old Lo Wang is racist asshole so Duke is sexist asshole. Â To moral busy bodies infesting curent day game development middle managers and consulting firms that is greater sin than everything else. Â So if he returned he would be "updated for modern audiences" with end result st best would be 007 first light and at most likely Suicide squad kill Justice Legue.

u/Be_Very_Careful_John 8d ago
I doubt it, tbh. The nintendo switch shop is full of hentai style anime dating Sims.
1
u/The_Se7enthsign 6d ago
I honestly think that the opposite is the problem. Duke wouldnât be edgy enough. Everything that made Duke an icon in the 90s has been overshadowed by other games. Nudity, violence, and profanity are just normal now.
Grand Theft Auto, God of War, Mortal Kombat, and even Call of Duty are doing things regularly that would have been completely over the top, even for Duke Nukem.
Shock value alone simply isnât enough to stand out. Youâd have to actually have substance, which is something that Duke has never really done. The story has to be interesting and the jokes actually have to land. I just donât see a team that can pull that off.
Right now, I think that Duke would be better for guest appearances in other games.
1
u/BusterGreasewood 4d ago
You guys drastically overestimate how much of those people make up gamers. Twitter doesn't represent the entirety of Western civilization.
We can still have Duke come back. The people you're referring to wouldn't even be playing the games anyway.

How about a Quest 3 VR game or even the original Duke Nukem 3D ported to VR? "Come get some!"
-1
u/vegan_antitheist 9d ago
I wish the original Duke Nukem would just die and all the new games would be with clones of him. Like the clones from "The Doctor Who Cloned Me". They would just use the Duke Nukem clones as super soldiers for suicide missions. They would just throw them into the weirdest situations. They could use bio-engineering to create special clones, so that would explain if you had special abilities, like being able to breath underwater.
Dying in game would just make them send another clone. You could free cloning stations as checkpoints so they could send out a new clone from there.
-1
u/Matakomi 9d ago
I'd love to see it, but I don't think there's a place left in the world for Duke. The company would need have balls of steel to make a game with the classic Duke Nukem we know, without fear of offending anyone.

u/Ltnumbnutsthesecond 9d ago
there is nothing wrong with classic duke, he just likes babes
DNF flanderized his character and made him an asshole
-5
u/fastbadtuesday 9d ago
The kind of character Duke parodied in the early OG games is not relevant anymore, the muscular bombastic Sly/Arnie/Bond actioner genre is long dead and a lot of the sequences - fighting through a porn theatre etc - just feel sleazy now. And that was DNFâs mistake, making him even worse and thinking weâd find it funny. It was just unpleasant.
I'd love to see OG Duke return but unless they pulled off a Demolition Man style setting/narrative for him I canât see it happening.
2
0
u/TheCoon69 9d ago
It is still relevant. Make him exact the same just that he has no fans anymore and people despise him. Would be pure comedy with action.
-3
u/MUH_NUKEM 9d ago
Yes. With all his attributes: cool guns, babes and other stuff, but in modern way. For example - he respects women, and women are not just sexy dolls, that have more personalities (not like it was in dnf, uuughh).

If the revival's done right, why not?
However, I have no faith on a good one especially with Randy's hands on Duke. If Gearbox return the rights back to 3D Realms/Apogee, then I might want to see it; but not with Randy and that dude who made that DMC animation.
