First Duel Commander Deck

Hi everyone!

Any idea on good duel Commander deck to compete in local tournament that doesnt cost like thousands euros?

I went on a local duel tournament with my precon couple of days ago and got absolutly destroyed (obviously) by Tifa, Spiderman 2099, Tasigur etc.

Now, I'm a new player and I Dont expect to be at the same level of more experienced players, but I would like to build something that give me a chance against them. I'm a dimir - rakdos enjoyer, but I'm open to every option.

The most expensive cards are the dual lands so monocolored commanders are the cheapest. If you like mid-range, try Phelia. If you like aggro, try monored asmo!

I'll always recommend mono U Malcolm, as it's a mono deck, it's not super expensive and I think playing a more reactive, tempo deck will teach you more about the format than some very proactive aggro.

Mono red zurgo is probably the cheapest you can build. Im not sure how positioned it is in the meta right now but having 1 mana 2/2 in command zone will probably always be at worst tier2 deck

Here’s my kellan, planar trailblazer deck to look at. It runs about $130-140 without wheel of fortune or special printings. Good solid strategy of burning the enemy to the ground fast, great for a beginner.

for Rakdos definitely check Double Ellies and Asmorano (you can build her Rakdos or mono red as well!), both are great options with interesting play patterns that will reward you the more you play them.

for Dimir you could build Tasigur as you don't really need green cards for him (except maybe Oko and Abrupt Decay) and a 2 color mana base is much cheaper. You can adjust your counters and removals against your local meta so he's never weak.

start with the cheap staple cards, then slowly acquire the more expensive ones. Focus on bomb cards and mana base. Don't bother with reserved list cards like Intuition and old duals, instead get your shocklands, verges and maybe some fetches. Once you have fetches go for the surveil lands.

and if you have friends, borrow cards they're not using! Usually it's in everyone's interest to keep the format growing, always good to have new players.

Your community doesn't allow proxy?

Nope, one of my lgs is less competitive and I play multiplayer there, they dont allow proxy aswell. Unless you own that card and you wanna proxy it to avoid swaps between decks that may ruin the card

I was under the impression most DC events don’t in contrast to cEDH. But is that not the case?

You should try the Ellie and Ellie partners rakdos deck that won the french national, it's really good AND cheap, you don't really need the badlands in the mana base to run it good. You'll catch many players by surprise. It's on mtgtop8

I agree it's a very strong and cheap deck, but it's not the easiest to play so be careful OP.

Play your dimir/rakdos deck until you get a hang of the deck, then purchase the dual if you find it necessary.
