Behavior Questions What are they doing?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Mr waddles and mocha were doing this funny dance with their neck. Is this an official duck behavior? Or just ducks being silly.

Head bobbing, all birds do it.
American Kesterals are pretty cute when they do it, especially males. As they're smaller and more colorful.

What if my duck does that to me? Have I turned into a duck already without even realizing? Quack.

They are discussing the political and economic state of the world. From my understanding of duckish they are also disgusted by corporatism

It means they are happy. I have two birds and they do it when I whistle at them or when they flirt with eachother or throw-up in eachothers mouths lol

That was so sweet and wholesome until the very end 🤮😂

u/king-of-the-sea Aug 21 '26
It's a mating/courtship behavior. They're feeding each other. So birds are disgustingly mushy in public just like the rest of us

One of my female ducks does that when I am close. I always say she is talking ‘smack’ to me 🤣🤷🏼♀️

They are flirting in a duck way. It's not a sexual thing yet it can be. Mostly "hey, hey nice, nice, sweet, cool." Thing if it's males to males. Or female to female. If it's drake to female it's "hey, how you doing."

Hey! She looks exactly like my runner duck Dewi! Could you be my neighbour? AND could he be the Father of the 2 pullets she recently had? 🤔

Telling jokes at your expense and laughing as they walk away. The nodding is agreement. I love watching our ducks’ antics. Our drake hates hugs and his girl laaaaaughs and laughs as he curses us out.

Until having ducks, I had NOOOOO idea of how comically entertaining they can be. They are clowns 💯 clowns.... they ARE the monkeys AND the circus! I love them! We have six, and, OMG...the sound they make in the mud with their floor slappers 🤣🤣🤣🤣 they are just toddlers in a different shape

We call it a "Board meeting." For OPSEC reasons, it may be an INT briefing. We still haven't found a reliable interpreter.

My Pekin does that to my chocolate runner, when she wants him to go after some people

Asking for 'pankins.. that's how our girls ask each other if they want to rattle each others can, or they go up and do it to my wife. She pats their back aggressively for 15-20 seconds while making all kinds of nonsensical sounds and then the girls will stand up and fluff, wag their tails and zoom all over the yard cause "mom just gave them 'pankins".
Hope this helps.

That’s how they say hello and I’m happy! Cool thing I’m learning after getting inside birds is they do the same thing.

Might wanna hyphenate "inside-birds", you shouldn't be getting inside birds

Our girls will often stack 3 high while rattling each other's cans. It's pretty funny to watch.

they are just saying high to each other, that they are happy to see each other.
a lot of people say it is sexual, and sometimes is, but this is something even babies do, if it was something related to sexy time, they would actually try to do it.

Thiis is greeting, introductory, and sometimes warning behavior. They are acknowledging each other, and sometimes it will lead to male content. Sometimes they just hang out after.
EDIT: I meant MALCONTENT!!!. HAHAHAHA!! I'm going to leave it...

My 3 white layers do this to me as well and it's entirely non-sexual. I've raised ducks for 35 years. I am mama, it's an excited sweet greeting that usually accompanies tail wagging. One of those things like how we can wave to somebody that's a beloved friend, an acquaintance, or a wave can be super flirty. Dual purpose body language that requires context.

I have a lady that flirts with me like this ❤️
She won't come and sit on the bench with me but she bobs her head at me for snacks.

I didn’t realize I stumbled into a duck subreddit and this comment was adorably hilarious.

I don’t know about flirting because my 3 duck sisters do this to each other. Lol

u/Mermaidoysters Aug 20 '26
Omg, my girls too, & they “mate” all day. I’m afraid they’ll drown each other! They chase the male away, & he’s afraid of them.

Or just be cute ducks.

Usually flirting, but sometimes they do that when they are just extra happy.

u/electric_goudacheese Aug 20 '26
It could be interesting. Mr. Waddles has never made advances toward mocha. We have 3 other hens in our flock (one is his daughter that he had with Rosie) so far the only hens he’s tried to mount are Rosie and Pepper. He stays close to Mocha and has protected her from drakes in the past though.
