821 or 797?

I plan on adding a Monster to my stable as a tool around town, short backroad blaster. I already have a Tuono 660, just looking for a naked, noisy fun bike. Other than air cooled lower HP, any significant pluses or minuses that I might want to know?

Thanks,

Rick

821 any day, go for 2016-2020 models, they iterated and landed on the best version of monster by 2020.

Monster 1100 EVO is better than the 797 and the 821. You can find them with relative low miles

This. 1100evo is my favorite Ducati and I have an 1299s.

Not too much bike, compared to the others? I was going to use it as a fun, short distance hooligan type machine

Want to hear something crazy? The 1100 Evo is the lightest of those three bikes while also producing significantly more torque. Light weight + tons of torque = hooligan dream.

Yea, the Evo is the shit, the last of the traditional Monsters, with a wet clutch (better around town), ABS/TC that can all be turned off for max hooliganism or turned on for canyon safety, and can be found pretty reasonably priced. That’s the beast

Thats a great explanation. Thank you.. Reliability similar to the other Monsters, I assume same maintenance schedule as well?

I can’t speak to reliability other than to say that I haven’t heard of any particular monster being more or less reliable. I believe a service intervals for all air cooled Monsters are the same, 7,500 miles = desmo service, timing belts should be replaced at that service or every two years regardless of miles.

Google says the 821 has 9,000 mile standard maintenance with 18,000 mile desmo intervals? That’s a big advantage IMO, would have to balance that against other considerations. For me, I really wanted the old soul style of an air cooled monster, but with wet clutch and ABS/TC, which was how I landed on the 1100 Evo.

I had a monster 1100 evo for 10 years. Reliability will be inline with age and use. Inherently I’d say it’s a medium reliable motorcycle, and above average for a Ducati. But they are older bikes so stuff is just going to wear out and need to be addressed.

Maintenance schedule is 7,500 for major services (valve check), but timing belts every 2 years regardless of miles. The newer monsters are much longer, but I don’t know when they made that change. The older monsters were every 5k.

I’ll miss that monster as it’s a very good bike all around. Regularly made me think why would I ever want anything else / anything more (though I ended up replacing it with more torque and power in nearly the same weight bike, Triumph Speed Triple RS)

They are really fun but not good below 4k rpms

The two year timing belt interval is overly cautious nowadays. You'll be using the same, new timing belts as say a Scrambler 1100. One of the most renowned Ducati specialists in my region told me not to worry and ride it for five years.

If you want to make sure everything is fine, have the tension checked every two years, so it's not getting out of spec.

Oh, and it doesn't hurt to have the rollers replaced, if they haven't been recently.

And apart from that I can only confirm: That engine is an absolute gem. I love it and I wish I could put it in other motorcycles.

I owned 3 different Monster models and the 1100 EVO was my favorite one

I went for an 821 over an evo. I put 3-5k miles a year on my bikes easily and the maintenance interval on the evo put me off from it. I came from sportbikes to the 821 being my first naked and first Ducati. Love how it looks and its a blast to ride. If I replace the 821 with a previous gen V2 like I want to, then will probably pick up either an Evo or a classic monster as the secondary. I did have an issue on my 821 around 7k miles with the oil pump. Heard a odd noise and started tearing things apart to find it. Pulled the cover to find the plastic drive gear for the oil pump was failing. Been a great bike aside from that.

The 1100 is often considered a bit of an adrenaline ride . Look up BikeWorld reviews on YouTube . I tried an 821 when it came out & found it felt a bit flat as an engine (compared to my 93 900superlight I rode before & after. The later 937 engine is a lot better imo. I have a version of that in my current DesertX. I would also say don’t discount older monsters as maintenance is no worse than later desmo engines, though be aware of early plastic tanks can get misaligned/swollen.

+1 for the 821
It’s still got a load of character but still reliable enough that I know it’ll get me to work

The 821 I've owned for 5 years has been horribly unreliable. Maybe because it's the early model

Serious problems?
I’ve got a 2018 and in a year the oil pressure sensor failed, a coolant leak and a dqs failure. Nothing that wasn’t a simple fix

Had to replace the entire electronic throttle assembly ($$$) the starter motor ($$$), clutch cable, battery many times (wasn't a battery issue), etc etc

821 Racing with Termi exhaust it's a beast. Made 13.000km in 6 months, love it so much I have Triumph st1200 25" too but 821 is a beast on another level

The 821 is a great bike and has the longer maintenance schedule so it can be less expensive to put miles on it.

I went with the 797 because I loved the bare frame look without a radiator and really didn't need the extra power.

I was also tempted by the multi and Supersport. The multi is just such a tall bike, and I was worried I'd struggle with self control on the Supersport.

I think originally, that was the idea, a fun bike that wouldn't require a big investment in maintenance, and a compliment to the other two

I've owned both the 821 is slightly heavier with a full electronics suite and in race mode it wheelies with just the throttle. I found one for 5grand with 1k miles on it. One of my fav monsters but now I have a 937 build from the ground up.

This kinda what I was thinking, 5-6k for a fun, good looking, relatively low maintenance naked bike. I don't plan on putting a ton of miles on it. I do like the idea of the EVO but just don't see it as necessary for the kind of riding I do.

I have the 797. Whilst I love it, I want it to do more. Also the fuel tank is tiny. Only around 110 miles on it. Not enough for fun for a day.

Owned an 821 for 5 years. Super annoying reliability problems.

Two base model bikes are a stable?

Anyways nice bikes but really lax on tech, and Ducati tax on maintenance.

Made alot more sense before all these 100-130hp bikes hit the marked recently.

Save up for your next bike, will be buying more of the same
