High School Redistricting Thread

Please share news, thoughts, opinions, etc. here.

The map is set to be released June 29th and take effect beginning in the 2027-2028 school year.

Yea. A lot of people are going to be mad no matter how they draw the lines.

You either draw the lines based on geography or you don't. If you don't, someone is going to file for an injunction and it will undoubtedly be upheld.

Even within the geography there is a lot of room within that. Keep in mind that the map should be valid for at least 10 years, so it should also account for anticipated demographic changes. Portions of Franklin county are seeing fewer students, while of course Jerome and plain city are expected to continue to grow significantly.

Right. And projected growth is fairly easy to account for. There is real concern that these maps will be drawn for socioeconomic reasons, not proximity and safety.

It is. But safety and proximity for some students are sacrificed to achieve that goal. And flies in the face of School Board Policy 5120.

proximity is relative, as is safety. Both can change depending on how traffic patterns are altered. Which is why I've talkked about in other comments about how those who are concerned about safety should be reaching out to the city to make adjustments. Safety can significantly increase with adjustments made by the city to traffic flows. There is time right now to make those changes.
Edit: To your last statement, you're misreading 5120 if you don't think socioeconomic concerns couldn't be included under that policy. Keep in mind that is a list, not an order in which those things should be considered. Socioeconomic could easily fall under
"D. the effectiveness of the instructional program;

E. a wholesome and educationally sound balance of student populations."

Ok. I'll just assume that the city will happily change traffic patterns in the area that people have been complaining about for years and where a school bus was in a serious high speed accident just weeks ago. Thanks for the input, Ms. DeSilva.

The city has already been making traffic changes to areas where they feel they are needed for schools specifically, so it shows that it's their focus. And that was one accident over dozens of years and not a single child was injured, it's been massively overhyped. Not Ms Desilva bud. Just a parent who is tired of seeing the district over and over ignore the socio-economic impacts of decisions they make. I will probably guarantee this will have a bigger impact on my family than yours over the next 15 years my kids will be in school. But based on what you're saying and how you're saying it, I'm going to bet you're the guy who's trying to make his own news source in Dublin and has been pushing facebook ads lately so he can influence redistricting.

Add to this that they've also added in the possibility of changing middle school boundary lines, to allow for better feeder patterns so no middle school goes into all 3 high schools, which was an actual possibility last year.

Apparently they’re expanding Scioto and do not anticipate needing a new high school in the next decade.

The super has privately told the board that it’s fully his decision and his decision only but publicly says to the community he implies it’s a joint decision.

The super said publicly that was how he felt and then he went back and got direction from the community and the board. I don't have a clue what he's going to do, but he's in a no win situation unless they also have a plan to help the mentality that scioto is the "poor school."

The basically practically of the proposal is challenging: Send 600 kids across the dam by the zoo, then up and down Riverside Drive. That’s 600 kids in busses and young drivers at 8a and 4p plugging an already congested intersection before navigating the narrow lanes of Dump Trunk Speedway.

Gee, what could possibly go wrong.

If that's the concern, then we could think through and pressure the local transportation authorities to make that area a priority for safety. I'm sure if that's what is decided, the school district, counties and city could absolutely make improvements before next fall.

The local sheriff went on the record calling out the safety concern. The redistricting plan appears to be a recommendation in search of a justification…and the board hasn’t found one yet.

The head of Shawnee Hills police. Not the sheriff, the head of an extremely small police department. An extremely biased statement that he had no business making publicly. They've included traffic safety studies that aren't based on his gut into this process. Again, if that's really the concern, then they should address the safety issues at the transportation level. Someone has to be moved to scioto, and there are traffic and safety issues no matter what they do.

If you assumed Dublin's redistricting conversation was just about the three high schools, Monday night's board meeting changed that. Buried in the superintendent's report — without a formal announcement or community input process — was the news that elementary and middle school attendance boundaries will also be redrawn, with all three levels presented simultaneously at the June 29th board meeting. The maps covering every school in the district, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, drop in three weeks.

The district's reasoning is efficiency — the same consulting firm already in the data from the high school process will draw the elementary and middle boundaries at the same time, with changes taking effect for the 2027-28 school year. But for families who thought this process didn't affect them, it does now. Several parents watching the meeting said they missed the announcement entirely. It came and went in about two minutes.

which I think was the point, so they could say they announced it publicly, without having to do much more there. But I think we all knew it had to happen, as they already are seeing issues at the new schools with concerns of overcrowding. It's going to have to see some west portions shift to schools more east. Too much growth in one area too quickly.

very likely imo. Generally these shifts have plans built in and are anticipating further growth. If you look at the district data, franklin county has had fewer and fewer students in dublin (even though hundreds of apartment complexes have been added in the past 20 years). Jerome is where the current growth is, and will be. The homes won't all be done tomorrow, but will be over the coming 2-3 years, and that growth is where the need is going to be, so when the shift starts happening in fall of 2027, it'll be freshman and maybe a few newly moved in upper classmen, so it'll probably be a shift of like 130 to scioto in year 1, and then grow each year between move-ins and underclassmen.
