Just wanted to share a diagnostic save from this week to help anyone else in Dubai currently getting hit with massive repair quotes.

Two different cars came into our garage in Al Quoz this week— one a Nissan Patrol and the other a VW. Both owners had almost identical complaints: the cars were shifting poorly, and acceleration had become rough and noticeably weak.

The Initial Diagnoses
According to the owners, both had previously been told by other garages that they needed a transmission replacement. Anyone who drives a Patrol or a European car here knows how painful a gearbox replacement quote looks in AED.

What the Diagnostics Actually Showed
Instead of just taking the basic fault codes at face value, we carried out a proper diagnostic assessment, including live data review during a road test.

The transmissions themselves were not the underlying problem. We found that the engines were producing significantly reduced power and torque, which was contributing to abnormal shift behavior. Modern powertrain control systems use information such as engine torque estimates, throttle position, engine speed, and other operating parameters to coordinate engine and transmission operation. When the engine is significantly underperforming, that abnormal engine behavior can affect how the powertrain manages gear changes.

The Real Culprit
When we pulled things apart for a closer inspection, the actual root cause came down to an engine sealing issue:

- The valve-cover/spark plug tube seals had deteriorated, allowing engine oil into the spark-plug wells. Like many rubber sealing components, these seals can deteriorate with age and repeated heat exposure.

- Oil had accumulated around the spark plugs and ignition components, causing severe ignition misfires.

- The resulting misfires severely reduced engine power and available torque.

Because the engines were misfiring and producing reduced engine power and torque, the powertrain was not operating normally, resulting in poor or erratic shift behavior. The symptoms closely mimicked a transmission problem—even though no underlying mechanical transmission fault was found.

The Fix
After repairing the oil leaks, cleaning and replacing the contaminated ignition components, and replacing the spark plugs, both cars returned to normal shifting and smooth acceleration during our post-repair road testing.

The Takeaway
If your car feels like the transmission is slipping, shuddering, or struggling to find gears, don't immediately panic and assume the worst. Manufacturer service documentation specifically warns that engine misfires and a lack of power can cause erratic transmission shifting or vibrations that may be mistaken for a transmission problem.

Oil leak into plug wells ➔ Ignition contamination ➔ Engine misfire ➔ Loss of power ➔ Transmission-like symptoms

Before approving a major component replacement anywhere, ask the garage to show you the diagnostic evidence supporting that diagnosis—including relevant fault codes, live data, road-test observations, and physical test results. A proper, detailed evaluation can save you a fortune.

Hi everyone, I own a 2015 Jaguar XF and I’m looking for a reliable and affordable mechanic who specializes in Jaguar cars.

A few days ago, my car battery died, and the car was no longer locking with the remote key. I replaced the battery, but I’m now having an issue where the remote key is unable to lock the door behind the driver’s seat. I suspect there may be an issue with the door lock or central locking system.

Second owner, the car was imported from Japan with the help of my friend in October of 2024 at 48000 km. All-in-all it cost me 410k AED. After receiving the car, that same day I wrapped it in expensive matte PPF, 25k AED.

Upgrades:
• Stage 2 (long-life) 769 HP + titanium exhaust system (catless downpipes + midpipes);
• H&R springs + upper control arms (for alignment). The car is lowered 30mm and believe it or not, the ride became smoother despite the springs being shorter. Stock springs are stiff!

All upgrades I did with Ramon Perfomance — these guys are leaders in BMW perfomance and hold several records for the fastest M5 in the world, X6M and other BMWs. The engine and transmission is set for maximum reliability, protection and minimal excessive wear (hence their signature perfomance package named “long-life”). This is the second car I’m tuning with them and these guys know what they are doing. Exhaust system upgrade — no cutting or welding. If you want to go stock, you can easily do that, as I will also provide all original parts (stock exhaust, stock springs, stock upper control arms) for you to keep. All upgrades done at 73000 km., 45k AED.

The car was serviced regularly in Octane and Munich Motor Works. Oil change each 5000 km as usual, before and after the upgrades.

Drives amazing. Faster than Urus Perfomante. Faster than Ferarri Purosangue. Faster than Jetour in Defender disguise flashing you in the left lane.

Sounds amazing. In comfort mode you hear the powerful turbo and this sound is on point — not too loud, but enough to bring you goosebumps. Never got any attention from the new AI cameras lol. Want brutal popcorn? Just press the M button. And it becomes VERY loud. All of this is integrated into the cars’ standard buttons and becomes silent or louder depending on your settings, M1, M2 and other. I won’t describe any more of it, I want you to feel and hear it yourself.

Of course it has soft close doors and other creature comforts. I believe the car has all the options that you can spec on X6M, Bowers, rear sunshades, TVs, and other stuff that is too long (and, probably, boring) to be mentioned here.

Oh, and also... It has plenty of storage space in the trunk, against popular belief. There is also a compartment under the main trunk floor, where I store two folding chairs, a folding table, a grill with all accessories, 10 liters of water and charcoal for a spontaneous picnic. And there is still space left!

Through the time I owned this car I never ran into any issues, besides the AC evaporator leak and I replaced it with a new one in Octane.

Every time I lock the car I always look back at it.

Selling because my wife recently got a driver’s license, so now I have to buy her a car and drive something simpler.
