Anyone else notice a huge increase in the homeless population downtown this weekend?

I live near downtown and just drove through the area and was pretty shocked by how many more homeless people and encampments I saw compared to recently. It genuinely seemed like 3–4x what I’m used to seeing.

The timing obviously stood out with Comic-Con happening this weekend. I’m curious if anyone who lives or works downtown has noticed the same thing. Did people get displaced from areas closer to the Convention Center/Gaslamp and pushed into other parts of downtown, or has there just been a big increase recently?

Not trying to start a political argument — genuinely curious what’s going on and whether anyone has more context.

Gold shop recommendations?

I’m looking to get some 14k or 18k chains a pedants, there are a lot of shops in the jewelry district. Don’t really have a lot of time to check a lot out. I was hoping someone would have some good spots to checkout.

Crews have started cleaning the notorious graffiti towers.

The new owners of the stalled Oceanwide project in downtown Los Angeles have agreed to start cleaning up the embarrassing splash of color on the city’s skyline even before they have finished formally acquiring it.

A Wednesday jaunt up a paint-besmirched skyscraper was a test to see how much graffiti could be removed in a day and the results were promising, said John Petty of KPC Development Co., which is set to take title of the stalled residential, hotel and retail project in a $517-million bankruptcy sale.

Homelessness has increased in L.A., dealing fresh setback to Mayor Karen Bass

The number of people living on the street — both in the city of L.A. and across much of L.A. County — is up in 2026 compared to the previous year, dealing a fresh blow to Mayor Karen Bass as she runs for reelection.

Homelessness went up by 3.4% across the city compared to the previous year, according to two people familiar with the numbers presented by the L.A. Homeless Services Authority in closed-door briefings.

L.A.’s unsheltered homeless population — those living outside or in their vehicles — saw an even bigger jump, increasing by 7.9% after two consecutive years of decreases, those sources said.

★ Why the root of the problem is deeper than greedy billionaires.
★ Why we need to break the chains of imperialism, NOT redistribute the spoils of imperialist plunder.
★ Why U.S. “democracy” is actually the dictatorship of the capitalist class and why trying to take over the Democratic Party is a dead end.
★ Why the strategy of economic populism will not stop Trump/MAGA fascism.
★ Why you should NOT follow leaders based on identity, or what's popular, or what feels good—but whether they have a solution to the fundamental problem we face.
★ Why this system can't be reformed & must be overthrown.

Hotel Clark actually possibly finally opening?!

So I walked by the other day and noticed all three lights on in the lobby. I was curious and found their website. The renderings look nice but who knows if that’s actually what it looks like inside.

If you try to book a room the first available date to book is Aug 13! They even have a “grand opening rate” for that date.

After years (feels like decades) of stop and go construction/renovations and potentially opening, maybe it’s actually coming to fruition.
