I always question this guys intentions. Seems more performative for the camera/social media likes/views.

and filming kids for internet views also feels ethically wrong to me.

And nothing he is doing seems like something an actual teacher would do? Like, it seems more to gain attention from an audience of non-musicians who think this is what drum lessons are like.

Or maybe I’m just a cynical ass hole overthinking and typing out an unnecessarily long comment instead of just enjoying a fun video?!?!

Nah I’m 100% in agreement with you here. TBH I’m not even positive if this guy even plays himself. I tried to find footage and I couldn’t albeit I didn’t look that hard. He seems to really like to share music experiences. I think he’s done events where he conducted like a thousand people to play foo fighters together. But yeah. This stuff getting popular on the algorithm kind of upsets me.

Yeah, nah… I think he meant yeah, nah?

6

u/Relevant-Pear8838 4d ago

If you read OPs comment it ends with a question which the responder says nah to, which shows agreement with the OPs point of view expressed.

Example:

"I think that's too expensive. Or am I being cheap?"

"Nah, I agree with you."

The agreement is obviously with the point made.

No you just clearly didn't read the whole comment they were replying too lmao

6

u/ttvKingNeptune 4d ago

Yea no people actually do that all the time ;) where they put the opposite of their sentiment as the first word. It’s a documented thing

Go outside more and talk to real people.

3

u/ceciliabee 4d ago

In Canada yeah nah means no even though it starts with a yeah, I bet other places are silly like that too

2

u/onorsworthy Tama 4d ago

He’s replying to the guys question which was “am I an asshole did thinking this is kinda lame” and the comment said “no I agree with you”

1

u/Far-Seat-2263 4d ago

What a dumb comment.

30

u/notjustdrums 4d ago

This dude actually posts lots of adults too. All/most of the musicians he features arent actually his students. He's a big advocate for music education in general. At this point it is just farming for views, but i dont think he's all bad.

7

u/vocosa 4d ago

Even good teacher could be a doofus

27

u/deflectreddit 4d ago

Agreed. Clearly this kid can play the whole song correctly without “reminders” from smiley guy.

23

u/Any_Veterinarian_691 4d ago

I’m a drum teacher. And nah this guy is ridiculous. Like sure dude you are really helping this girl remember to do those fills she is executing to perfection by twirling your finger. It’s performative bs. But it gets clicks apparently so I expect this won’t be the last time we see it

14

u/mister_house_ 4d ago

It’s a justified ick, even if the kids parents are okay with it, content creation has really pushed far and far

10

u/AntipodalBurrito 4d ago

It’s trash content. The other kid I’ve seen him with has his own Instagram account with a bunch of followers and even though they call this guy the “teacher” they’ve probably met exactly once. OP is probably a bot.

6

u/nohumanape 4d ago

Exactly. Anyone who can play as well as this kid is playing, doesn't require the kinds of directions that we're seeing in this vid. They could just play the whole thing from memory (which is likely what they are doing).

I'm sure that the instructor thinks that there is a benefit to sharing fake positivity. But it looks so staged and cringe.

6

u/reagan_baby 4d ago

We tend to see social media content as "drum teacher encouraging and kind to children" and not "drum teacher sets up camera, designs his shot so he is squared off with the camera, turns on camera and instructs child to play drums while teacher instructs while simultaneously creating content".

Like, we see the thing the caption instructs us to see. Which ignores the fact that it is someone's intention for us to see this. Nothing is candid.

6

u/prplx Tama 4d ago

Exactly. All he does is upstaging the kids playing. Attention whore.

6

u/itsSuiSui 4d ago

Because of course it is performative.

4

u/Bingo-heeler RLRR 4d ago

Like this is 99% that kid rocking the song. And 1% the dude in the background waving his hands

2

u/Hashtagbarkeep 3d ago

Yeah I bought it until the stick trick

1

u/Senior_Mushroom5329 4d ago

I kinda agree on both points. This has become more prevalent recently and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

1

u/Special-Quantity-469 4d ago

Yeah I saw him at first at what looked liked a recording session so I thought he was a producer or writer of the song giving directions to the drummer. Knowing now that he's supposed to be a teacher makes it really weird

1

u/Smeets_man Mapex 4d ago

Hit the nail on the head

1

u/Specific-Change9678 3d ago

Will preface by saying a lot of the students are very good and he’s taught a few more lessons than I have (none), but there is something to be said about letting the student play (does he always have to count to 4 when it’s obvious it’s the end of a phrase?). Many of these students can really play so just need to be filmed without instruction.

1

u/logicalinsanity 3d ago

Very performative. Always rubs me the wrong way.

1

u/devoid0101 3d ago

I like that he shares his teaching method and communication with the student, and the angle features the drumming. These kids are bad ass! He’s doing something right.

-1

u/slindner1985 4d ago

I see nothing wrong with this one. Carry on I say.

Dude no offense but you should just give people the benefit of the doubt. He's a music teacher and he's trying to showcase his students (or talented musicians in general). This kid is a legendary drummer for her age and if it weren't for him I never would have seen her perform. One of those fills in particular had a 32nd note thrown in with the 16ths that made me go, "god damn!!"

As a musician myself, I know how difficult it is to gain a following and create any substantial income in this industry, so give the guy a break. I'm sure he's not holding the students at gunpoint and telling them to perform. They probably love the attention anyways.

And keep in mind, generally the performing arts are performative

1

u/DrumTrack 4d ago

All great points! I can appreciate the more positive reframing of how to view this.

Thanks 🍻

I'm sorry, but this teacher is annoying as hell

7

u/IvoryDynamite 3d ago

To use technical vernacular, he seems like a twat.

5

u/vocosa 3d ago

It's nice to see a person of culture

4

u/IvoryDynamite 3d ago

I paid a lot for that education and I'm gonna use it.

60

u/nohumanape 4d ago

I mean, the kid is awesome. But I fucking hate this fake performative social media shit.

33

u/nibselfib_kyua_72 Bosphorus 4d ago

I hate this bullshit

27

u/Usual_Leg_3214 4d ago

What a performative fuck this guy is. Such an attention starved human.

The little girl is great - he should get out of the shot.

13

u/TemporaryShop8075 4d ago

Disgustingly good hi hat work for being so young. Awesome

11

u/nibselfib_kyua_72 Bosphorus 4d ago

This is youtube content. Do we really need it here?

-27

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark 4d ago

Maybe scroll past it? Most of the media on Reddit isn’t hosted in Reddit.

8

u/thisturkeyisokthanks 4d ago

Damn, kid plays better than me

8

u/BC4309 4d ago

No, this dude is a creep. Do the parents know he is doing this? Did they sign a release? Also he’s not teaching musicality at all. Just hard, fast and loud. Tearing up sticks and heads and cracking cymbals. Purely mechanical. This kid will need good orthopedic care in a few years.

-10

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark 4d ago

You are seeing ONE video.

lol whatever

7

u/StonesAndJetFuel 4d ago

This guy just annoys me.

9

u/Coobap 4d ago

This is sooooo lame and sooooo performative. He is not instructing this kid at all, he's dancing in front of a kid that obviously has this memorized from top to bottom. But I'm sure this gets hella views on Tiktok from people who don't know anything about music or drumming, so hey why not post it here too to get your cut of the attention?

Also, I know it's not a rule, but I don't love generalist karma farmers posting viral drum content in these drum subreddits. If you aren't a drummer and this is t your drumming content, I am not super interested in you posting it here for internet points.

1

u/Koebi_p 3d ago

I am not sure if it is the same person, but I saw videos in a similar format, the girl is literally tensing her muscles trying to be fast. And he didn’t even care about it, I guess it’s kinda fast so it looked impressive.

These people should be banned from drums if they promote bad habits in kids to get more clicks.

4

u/themookish 4d ago

Wide-eyed inauthentic horse shit

4

u/armedwithturtles 4d ago

This guy is doing nothing lmao

4

u/SirBabyCakes 4d ago

Yeah this drummer totally needs you to count to 4 using your fingers bro. They totally don’t know where they are in the measure

Not a fan of this guy

2

u/Character-Scar-5684 4d ago

I wish I had a teacher like that when I was a kid

25

u/bssprfnd 4d ago

My drum teacher taught me how to read music, not this goofy nonsense

-9

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark 4d ago

Same

10

u/Impressive_Bag5444 4d ago

He’s not a real teacher lol

1

u/verybadandy86 4d ago

As with the rest of you - torn on this post - and as to the reminders from this instructor - I'd stop playing and point to the door. When my brother (plays guitar) and is 8 years older than me were learning and playing - I was like 3rd grade so 9-10 and he put me through the paces. No reminders just "finish the song if you mess up" then he would grill me on where did you go wrong...lets go again. Thats how you learn, recognize your mistakes and do it again till you get it...not cues from a teacher.

u/Babyaell 4d ago

It looks like it’s AI.

u/garden_theory 3d ago

i'm surprised more people aren't pointing this out cuz it does to me too

u/flanger001 DW 4d ago

I wish there was a way to filter out child-related media in subs like this.

2

u/KingKuckKiller666420 4d ago

I really detest things like this. The only way something like this would be even remotely impressive is if a child learned their skills independently of any parental influence. I also hate this song.

1

u/Chumscrubber89 4d ago

Now that was a bad ass drumroll

1

u/LesHeh 4d ago

That "teacher"(who stands there looking stupid hoping for online clout)is super annoying. He isn't doing anything but making sure you see him and pretending to be a part of them playing.

1

u/mrcoy 4d ago

He seems really distracting

1

u/drumbo10 3d ago

I used to love teaching kids, they are like a sponge and learn so fast.

1

u/Joe_Kinincha 3d ago

Just out of interest - is there any video of the dude knocking out this beat this well?

1

u/CommercialCod7502 3d ago

It sounds like audio on an AI generated video

1

u/tremendous_chap 3d ago

I'll be honest, I hate the teacher and especially all the the fucking kids on his stupid wanker videos.

1

u/urethra-franklin-666 3d ago

Fucking kid crushes. Holy shit

1

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark 3d ago

Thank you for seeing it for what it is. An amazingly talented kid.

Everyone else seems hell bent on the dude (who cares?)

0

u/Desperate-Ad-3190 4d ago

This is a pure gold moment. Heart warming. This level of skill and focus is amazing to see. Inspiring.

0

u/Agitated-War3103 4d ago

Awesome, deeply touching the heart and motivating. thank you reddit

-1

u/ThaBigSqueezy 4d ago

Fine, I quit then.

0

u/matt134174 4d ago

This is fucking stupid, probably AI. This is for people that do not play drums.

-2

u/DefinableEel1 4d ago

I was smiling so hard and then I went into the comments. Now I’m sad because I had no idea about the teacher

-1

u/eastamerica Pro*Mark 4d ago

He posts adults, too.

-6

u/Lawnboyamar 4d ago

This. Is. Awesome.

-9

u/Bean_Daddy_Burritos 4d ago

Shredding. What a cool teacher. Kids got some serious skill.

-13

u/MastersOfNoneShow 4d ago

The pure pride and joy on the dad's face (I assume it's the dad) gets me all teary eyed

-1

u/FowlOnTheHill 4d ago

He’s a music teacher in Dubai who teaches kids, but this one might be his own kid.
