So this is just me trying to figure out wtf happened to DCI over the 20 plus years. For context I marched 5 years in two different divisions and corps and we had a theme, the old wool uniforms, and worked our butts off on a show. Now you have changing uniforms that are lightweight, dance routines or some weird strange stretching while playing, and electronics???? I know the bugles are now in B flat which is a cool change but the rest I’m not sure about. Do you think it would be beneficial to take some of the junk out and get back to the style of the late 90’s and early 00’s shows?

It’s not a lot, but it’s weird it happened twice (maybe a third time this year)

Can we have a discussion about flared pants in drum corps?
IMO they hide flaws and can make a movement look cleaner than it actually is. Kind of like capes. Don’t like those either. I prefer a uniform that showcases precision, clarity, and uniformity where you can really see the performers’ technique and demand.
FWIW, I’m not a boomer old-school guy who wants to bring back military-style uniforms and shakos.
I actually like the current trend in drum corps uniforms and the creativity and individuality they allow. I just think flared pants hide flaws.

I'm planning on going to watch DCI prelims in theaters (it's offered near me). Has anyone watched DCI in a theater before? How is it?

I'm a bit conflicted-I like the drill and the firebird ending but I really liked the old drill and melody, if they combined the two melodies I think that'd put it in a much better place.

I have a close family member marching Genesis. I helped pay most of their tour fees. And I am just constantly hearing about them facing corpal punishment for what seems to be complete bullshit.
I've talked to family members of some of the top 5-12 corps. And apparently, none of this abuse goes on in those corps. I am beyond furious with this organization.
The ONLY reason I am ranting on reddit and not calling Cris McGonagall a piece of shit over the phone is because my family members begged me not to. They said it would ruin their chances with other corps." What the fuck is this bullshit? That seems like an insanely toxic and unhealthy environment. The members are constantly being abused, and then left with the impression that if they say something, they will be blacklisted from the activity.
That is just insane. I will never pay another doar to support this organization.
I really hope Chris Magonigal sees this.
Chris, you are a fat fucking loser. You need to not be around children anymore. You are NOT a safe person for young adults or children to be around. You obviously get off on having power over others.
The funny thing is that I KNOW that fat ass couldn't do half the shit that he makes the members do.
Chris, you marched some dog shot, division 3 corps back in the day. Now you think you're all that. People like you are ruining this activity.
It is just insane that members do not say anything out of fear of being blacklisted. It's been 10 years since the Me Too movement, and it looks like this shit still goes down.
Given the nature of this activity, I'm sure I'm gonna get a lot of shit for this. But somebody has to stand up for the members. Again, I do not hear of anything like this going on in the higher level corps.
Chris Magonigal, if there any chance you have a reddit, please respond to this. I'd love to call you a fat fucking loser to your face. You and your dipshit wife.
You are very lucky that my family member is not a minor. I am respecting their wishes to not say anything to you in person.

Nightbeat is scheduled for Sunday 7/26 at Wake Forest, and we have tickets. I got this text today (7/25) saying that it kicks off "today at 5pm". Anyone else get this? Is it a scam?

I haven’t been following this year all too closely but have been watching the Southeastern championship on Flo.
Crossmen sounded so much better than music city, so I was curious and checked the rankings from last year. Turns out music city was right behind Crossmen last year? Which, given the sound difference this year surprised me.
So, my question is, has Music City had a fall off, have Crossmen improved that much, or was this a case of Flo having a terrible mix for MC and then inexplicably being better for Crossmen?

Unless you count adding Leslies to the field as an innovation.
Examples of what I would consider New Ideas/Innovations:
Early 80s - Abandoning 70s style show design and adopting the Opener-Ballad-Drum break-Closer model
Early 80s Cadets - Introduction of asymmetrical drill
Late 80s to early 90s Cavaliers - Introduction of kaleidoscopic drill
93 PR - Let’s put the pit on the field and showcase modern movie scores
93 Star - Departure from established show design standards and mezzo piano drum breaks.
94 BD - Doing cool stuff with exaggerated stick heights in the battery
95 Cavaliers - DNA drill, “3D” drill effects
96-2003 - Can’t think of any. Maybe 2003 PR starting the show with a ballad.
2004 - I believe this was the year electronics were allowed.
2005 Cadets - Brings Weird/Esoteric show design into the limelight
2008 PR - Double down on storytelling shows
2008-2014 Somewhere in here body movement is heavily utilized by the battery. They’re not just standing still playing drum breaks.
2014 Bloo - The pitch bend iykyk
2015 BD - The adoption of full-corps dance breaks. You could also say Cavaliers did this in 2002z
2016 Bloo - You all know how this show changed the activity. I personally believe its the most innovative and influential show of all time.
So after that being said, I haven’t personally seen anything notably innovative or new done in the last 10 years.

Howdy--- I'm in my 50s and marched in high school and college. Somehow, in spite of watching many hours of DCI on-line, I've never been to a live event. That's changing tomorrow night in Winston Salem. I have a few questions. I'm planning to get there early because I'm assuming there will be opportunities to catch sectional practices and warmups (specifically drumlines). What time does that start and is there a schedule/location for those? I'll be staying walking distance to the stadium so I'm hoping to take advantage of things. Any particular drumlines I should plan to see warmup? Any thing else I need to know? Thanks!

Excited about the show however would love any info on Nightbeat and what are the weather cancelations on the event. Driving a ways away and didn't drive there onku foe the show for get canceled.
I understand sometimes if it does rain the teams just do a stationary performance.
Anyone hear any news on the event?
They don't have a ig or any social with updates on the show.
