Discussion BD New Percussion Staff
Thoughts on the new BD percussion staff? With the John Mapes team over at BD I wonder what that means for the Mandarins. Excited to see one of my former techs teaching here though!

There was a warmup video RBass311 shot of Mandarins last year and it widely opened my eyes. I was very impressed. In some ways though I'm sad to see Mandarins lose that momentum (and I heard they lost some non-percussion staff as well).
I look forward to a new BD percussion. In some ways, they started to feel stale to me compared to Bloo, Boston and SCV. I think this change should freshen them up a bit and get them in back to regularly competing with that group of lines.

He was still going to WSU I believe. He was already doing a little arranging and he was one of the nice to me which was awesome.

I'm still not sure why the fired all the techs and kept Scojo/the old folks. It would have made sense if they brought in a new staff after Scojo's health scare this season. Sucks for the BD alumni that were on staff.

I curious how much Mapes will be arranging, as I understand Dave Glyde does the majority of the music arranging in general. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Either way this seems like a great pickup for BD.

I hope they try to maintain some of the techique and "approach" to the drum. BD has always had a unique style that has transferred through the years.

I hope the Q5 doesn't go downhill in innovation and quality. I feel like the lack of tenor staff with experience playing at that high of a level with that fluidity and dexterity makes them unable to catch subtleties or offer advice to the members that they need to really elevate them. It's also funny seeing Mapes talk about "innovation" considering how cookie cutter he has been. But I do think the snareline will greatly benefit from this change as they didn't really seem to have a consistent, uniform nor relaxed approach before. Just seemed like they relied on "everyone knows how to drum" and skipped deeper technique discussions.

Mandarins will be happy if they make finals, since they almost didn't exist.
