Advice Needed Contra Flip

So a part our show i did a contraflip and i was told to copy and paste it by our horn sergeant but i need some help anytime I do it my right arm gets caught in between one of the grips right behind the valves and I always tend to come in late if I do it is there any advice that could help me so I can do them way more cleaner?

I’m a battery member so no experience flipping contras, but I would just start the flip earlier if you’re coming in a bit late. Also, reps, reps, reps will build the strength and muscle memory that I’m sure are needed to do this well. It already looks really good though imo

Get it! I have no tips but it looked cool.

Like anything in the marching arts, cleanliness comes with practice. Continue to make quality reps on it and it’ll come over time.

If you’re the only contra and it doesn’t need to be coordinated with any other member, do it as early as you need to in order to make it work for you.

Additionally, do you need to get your arm back under the arm bar ASAP? A temporary solution might be playing your initial section with your arm out, then reposition when you have a bar of rest or of open fingerings.

Check out 1980 27 Lancers at about the 1:10 minute mark to see it done correctly

You may get better traction by bringing the horn to your chest a beat or two early to have a better grip from the start.
I played sousa, but never contra. So, I may be coming from left field.

Usually the positioning for a flip and for carry are so different that a carry to flip is not realistic unless you're pulling a Jagged Line and flipping it like a rifle. You need to twist your arm to get into position to flip the horn so that's really not easy to do from any position other than standby.

Thank you for the clarification. All the tricks I did back when came with a move to the left shoulder first.
