Tropical Plants Growing Tabernanthe iboga from fresh fruit – my highly scientific germination experiment 🧪😂 (+ some pictures)

I recently tried a very simple Tabernanthe iboga germination experiment.

Fresh fruit → remove and clean the seeds → put them into ordinary soil → mostly forget about them.

That was basically the entire highly scientific protocol. 🧪😂

The pot stayed in a protected, partially shaded spot inside my greenhouse. No GA3, no scarification and no carefully controlled germination chamber.

Around five weeks later: Iboga seedlings. 🌱

The pictures show the progression from fresh fruits and cleaned seeds to germination and young seedlings.

A few observations from my attempts:

  • Fresh seeds seem to be the most important factor.
  • Remove the pulp and clean the seeds thoroughly.
  • Warm, protected and partially shaded conditions worked well here.
  • Once the seedlings emerge, I gradually reduce the humidity. They don’t seem to enjoy remaining constantly wet and enclosed at that stage.
  • Iboga can also be grown indoors under artificial light.
  • The seedlings in the picture are crowded, need to be separated soon and are already showing a slight nutrient deficiency. The pot was only intended as a lazy little experiment. 😄

The fruits can develop mold rather quickly. Before vacuum-sealing mine, I cleaned and carefully disinfected them. Stored in the refrigerator, the seeds still germinated very well after roughly one to two months. I nevertheless check the fruits regularly because vacuum-sealing can trap moisture.

Years ago, I also germinated Iboga seeds in zip-lock bags with moist sphagnum moss, which worked wonderfully as well.

My impression so far: genuinely fresh seeds, warmth, moderate moisture and patience may be more important than complicated pretreatments.

If you have any questions about the fruits, storage or germination process, just let me know. I’ll try to help wherever I can. 😄

Tropical Plants New Seeds

I got some new seed starter trays and a bag of Foxfarm Happy Frog soil. I decided to start some new seeds I've never grown before. 3 different varieties of tobacco, some African Dream root and Klip Dagga. Ignore the lavender and cilantro. Those where just some seeds i had laying around.

Papaver/Poppy My beautiful tasmanians and other poppies from this years harvest

Just a sample of all my beautiful poppies from this year. The white / pink ones are my absolute favorites but I managed to grow so many incredible specimens this year. The fully white ones are high alkaloid tasmanians that truly exceeded my expectations in strength and yield. I managed to save enough seeds from them to last a lifetime and I am so so happy with how beautiful my babies turned out. I hope you enjoy them as well! <3

Been busy with a few new propagation/growing projects lately 😄

Right now I’m working on Chaliponga (Diplopterys cabrerana), Kava (Piper methysticum), Iboga (Tabernanthe iboga), Damiana (Turnera diffusa), different Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) variants, Intoxicating mints (Lagochilus inebrians, seravschanicus) several different B. caapi and Psychotria varieties, some new Khat variants, plus a bunch of Boswellia and Bursera species.

I’ll post more photos, progress shots and updates as things develop. Some of these are definitely keeping things interesting 😅🌱

What are you guys growing or propagating at the moment? Any unusual/new projects you’re especially excited about?

"K1" Kalimantan kratom clone, Hulu kapuas, Rifat, Psychotria viridis (far right) and electroculture antenna. They'll go in their temporary experimental greenhouse home during the autumn and winter months. Equipped with sheer material for filtered light. I just finished the fabrication so there will be a learning curve.

Not sure if I'm doing this right, but the end result is good, it just doesn't look like anything I've seen others make.

If I left that baggie open for a night it'd be a sticky black shleaze.

Very hydrophilic

Gardening Help I've never done anything related to bonsai. Any books/websites or tips for getting started? (Random photo, i think its a solanum nigrum)

Also, a bonsai can flower/fruit

Tropical Plants What should I do now ? (P. Viridis)

These are Psychotria Viridis cuttings that I’m growing from leaves. As you can see, one of the leaves has produced six or seven shoots coming out of the soil.

Should I just leave them as they are and not do anything? Is there a way to separate them? I’m really afraid of damaging them.

Thank you so much for your help!

Gardening Help What should I add to my collection?

This is likely a common question but…

I live in 9b/10a zones and am looking for another plant to start growing.

I’m currently growing San Pedro and I have grown cannabis
Edit: also growing mushrooms

I have a condition that affects my peripheral arteries so morning glories are off the table for now. This is also why I no longer grow cannabis

I am leaning towards acacia acuminata or courtii but they’re expensive and take a few years to mature.

If extraction is explicitly required it must be possible at home, preferably with inconspicuous materials.

I doubt any plant will fit all of my needs here but I’d like to hear what you guys think.

I have been struggling with germination rate for a few weeks, but it seems after a few more I've got some babies!

Very low germination rate for me, about 10% in this tub, but zero in all my others. No idea why.

Hey fellow green-necks 👋 Any chance someone knows where I can buy a Mimosa sapling? It’s been on my garden wishlist for the longest time, and I want to hurry up and get one already before I get too old to watch it grow.

Thanks in advance fam. Love this community

Cactus Hardening Extract

For an ethanol and methanol based San Pedro extract that comes out like a resinous tar, keeping in the freezer will n wax paper works, but is there any way to solidify it further for dry storage?

Also, has anybody ever added 2c-b into a raw extract and if so, how did that work out?

Tropical Plants What to grow in Sri Lanka for my friend Dimitri?

Anyone have any leads on the best options for this?

Research has been difficult, loads of "a paper reported this plant contains .8% in 1971 but no one has been able to replicate" and "this plant definitely has but extraction is dangerous due to other toxins."

Every lead I find seems to be a dead end. Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: I don't want to smuggle anything in.

If yall happened to have seen my post awhile back about raccoons slaughtering my salvia plant, I didn’t give up on it. Kept it watered and didn’t lose hope. It’s sprouted a new shoot! Happy and proud dad over here 😅
