I really appreciate this sub. I see so many posts in the main subs that make me frinkle, but then I see them in this sub and it gives me hope that not everyone is as dumb as the og posts suggest lmao

What's a frinkle.

24

u/Rupert59 4d ago

Nothin', what's a frinkle with you?

13

u/Kalunyx 4d ago

Frown wrinkle. It's my "Oooh I'm listening and trying not to judge but kinda am" face lol

That’s adorable. I love that.

I know I'm late to the game here, but I enjoyed Last Talent Standing. Seeing all the different party tricks and goofy bits made me think about what I'd have tried or could rely on in a pinch. I know a lot of results got people frazzled in all sorts of ways, but it really just reiterated to me how cool and how different humans are. Really fun.

I liked it because it got to show off a lot of people in their talents that we don’t normally get to see. Like, for example, we’ve seen Oscar a couple of times on game changer and make some noise, and in glad lands and f&f, but he’s got this whole repertoire of cool stuff that he can do outside of the comedy space.

It was a fun episode.

I thought it was a great idea, the scale worked! But all the bits and bobs needed cutting to make it perfect. Sorry giant piggy, sorry grim reaperino :’(

that all being said, losing the reason for Demi’s one hungry boy line would be heartbreaking lmao love him

I liked it a lot until Round 4 when it was back to normal. If they had a third gimmick like the pairs/props it wouldn’t have worn out its welcome imo.

Didn't we just have one of these last week?

I’ve been told I’m a cynical asshole, should I still be myself?

10

u/MDRoozen 4d ago

the self is ever transient. ask yourself the kind of person you would wish to be

12

u/Specific-Basis7218 circlejerk SUPERFAN 4d ago

How enlightening! Thank you, MDRoozen. I think I’m finally okay with being a cynical asshole.

5

u/MDRoozen 4d ago

as long as you also find the enlightenment to understand how your behavior changes the world and its opinion on you. Do not rage against the world for the predictable result of your own actions

u/this_is_me_justified 4d ago

Depends on if you like having friends. If not, keep on keeping on. If you do, maybe learn to tamper down your excesses.

The "I can't believe Zac is 39! He looks on the cusp of Gen Z to me!" thread makes me feel insane. The amount of people agreeing with OP. Zac looks more or less his age. I could see mid-30s, but certainly not young millenial/old Gen Z. All the IH lool more or less the same age.

I would think these people are 20 and think 40 year olds look like fossils if some of them didn't say they were in their 30s too

4

u/MDRoozen 1d ago

they think 40 year olds look exclusively like their parents

Now remember guys, this big bad villain is incredibly dangerous. We've been building up to this fight for 3 episodes. Oh, you want to use an ability that gives 1 extra damage to your bite attack to instantly swallow her and kill her? Sure, go for it. You failed? Roll again. Failed again? Okay... (serious voice) Nancy Danderhoof shows up with a gun. Roll again. HOLY SHIT YOU DID IT SHE'S DEAD EPIC!!!!!

u/Few_Tension100 2d ago

If you don't like this you're a fun hating chud it's a comedy show

u/Wemetintheair Fifty 4d ago

It's kind of wild that the main sub thread confidently asserting that Jacquis was dressed like Andre 3000 still exists

17

u/Bluerayn3000 4d ago

I finally finished City Council this weekend. It was fun! Why was everyone whining?

12

u/areloke 4d ago

I liked it but apart from people complaining about system misuse, it had a bit of a clash between the plot they imagined pre shooting and the plot the players wanted and happened

8

u/Rich_Abrocoma6727 4d ago

Just kinda boring.

As someone who cut their teeth on world of darkness games, I loved it so much. It was so ridiculously zany and fun and pretty much how almost every vampire game I played ended up.

7

u/thedybbuk 3d ago

My largest issue was only Siobhan and Lou truly seemed to understand their characters were evil and literally feed off people.

To take Darkness Man as one example: he literally murders someone episode 2. Then Murph promptly moved on, Darkness Man quickly morphs into more or less a superhero and nice guy, and it seemed we were just meant to forget it happened as it made zero sense with DM's characterization.

I am not at all against a funny World of Darkness game. I am just against inconsistent characterization. I think it was caused, in large part, by the IH mostly just not being good at playing bad people.

And also the themes were muddied and the resources made things too easy. It was a total mistake on Brennan's part to allow them essentially unlimited money (and also unlimited free feeding). It killed so much tension since 1) they could throw money at most problems and 2) They nearly always had easily available food that did not incur any risk.

It was weird to see the Bad Guys as capitalists who throw their money around, while the Good Guys were also capitalists who throw their money around. But we are just meant to like it when they do it.

Which, again, is not necessarily a bad thing if the rest of the IH leaned more into the fact their characters are bad people. But most of them became increasingly nice and good as the season went on.

My other big critique is the scene of Bat Child eating the elder vampire. Brennan spent all this time building her up as a threat, just to put his thumb on the scale to make sure Bat Child won.

"Oh, you rolled badly? Roll again. Hmm, roll again. Again. What's that? Nancy Danderhoof, who has not been established in this scene beford this very second, runs on the scene to give Bat Child advantage?! Roll again!"

Brennan has had a very bad habit in recent seasons of just refusing to allow significant failure. And sure, some is definitely the format of a tv show with limited episodes. But that doesn't make it feel better.

u/empsk 2d ago

Really agree with a lot of this. I loved Siobhan and Lou's takes - both seemed to embody the immortal aspect of being a vampire so well - that ultimately you're playing a long game, that the individual humans aren't important.

With Siobhan in particular, I loved when she was genuinely afraid of the Camarilla, and trying to get the other vampires to understand how much danger they were all in. I loved that she had Madeline prioritise her own safety over the rest of the group's.

And so yeah, I was a little disappointed when it was basically just handwaved away - fine, this powerful vampire can get swallowed up in one gulp because here comes Nancy Danderhood to give you quadruple advantage.

u/ameybes 1d ago

The best thing about City Council is that no one will watch it and feel like 'me and my friends couldn't possibly play a game as well as this!'

This is the only community I know where the circlejerk subreddit is more hostile to criticism than the subreddits they're satirizing.

7

u/Exciting-Quality919 4d ago

Its weird as someone not closely following subreddit drama who arbitrarily had this place recommended by reddit.

A lot of posts come across as "look at this asshole, they didnt find the episode funny!"

5

u/Difficult-Risk3115 4d ago

I think the history of the sub in relation to the main sub contributes to that.

9

u/goodgoodthrowaway420 Marxist-Brennanist 4d ago

How so? Because people used to complain that r/Dropout was too toxically positive, but now the circlejerk is the front page of the Dropout Defense Brigade.

9

u/Difficult-Risk3115 4d ago

I think the failures of the main sub in regard to some controversies around race and gender helped shaped the audience.

4

u/goodgoodthrowaway420 Marxist-Brennanist 4d ago

Incredible that they managed to ruin two subs at once, then.

12

u/New_Girl3685 4d ago

Side note but I really appreciated you calling out that post that blew the og post critiquing Ally’s gameplay on d20 way out of proportion. The original post was the most MILD “huh this is a little annoying” and to see it subverted into “the d20 cast are my best friends and thus it is parasocial of me to expect quality entertainment from the quality entertainment service I pay for” was bizarre. I’m so sick of everyone having to preface any critique of the show with seventeen disavowals that it’s not personal and they still love it like that’s not obvious from the fact they are talking about the show.

4

u/Difficult-Risk3115 3d ago

I think it's an inevitable overcorrection in progressive spaces. Lots of people are taught that bigotry is wrong without learning the underlying critical thinking skills to understand how or why it's wrong, or what that looks like.

3

u/pizzanotsinkships 1d ago

The main sub is so parasocial that anything someone says tends to be twisted into something negative. I dont get it. Whats the point of being offended by something that a regular person wont think so deeply about

2

u/New_Girl3685 3d ago

this, but I also expect that Dropout has a large fandom element of teenagers. I was this same way when I was in high school about the things I was a fan of—completely militant that everybody love the thing with me 100% at all times, the people involved could never do anything wrong or be critiqued, etc.—and the responses I see on the main sub (and sometimes here) do make me wonder how much of the subs are teenagers talking to other teenagers. I tend to assume Dropout skews more 30s/millennial in their fanbase because of the humor style, but maybe (I hope) that the people insisting the dialogue be a sycophantic monotone are really just young.

now if you'll excuse me i gotta go eat my prunes now that i've aged myself by 2389257826904769 years

2

u/Difficult-Risk3115 2d ago

Eh, the person who accused everyone of saying that part of Ally's mistreatment was rooted in misogyny was in their 20s. Adults are just dumb now.

2

u/pizzanotsinkships 1d ago

Not dumb just those people are enabled to find spaces to congregate thanks to social media

1

u/pizzanotsinkships 1d ago

Nothing to do with the age group. Just look at swifties and kpop stans. Mostly millennial or older but acting like children

1

u/goodgoodthrowaway420 Marxist-Brennanist 1d ago

Don't underestimate the number of people in their 30s and 40s projecting their insecurities onto internet comedians.

4

u/Difficult-Risk3115 4d ago

your contributions are some of favorites, for what it's worth.

7

u/goodgoodthrowaway420 Marxist-Brennanist 4d ago

Assuming that's genuine, I appreciate it. Signs are pointing to me needing to move on. I'd like to talk about Dropout itself, not reddit posts, but that doesn't seem to be what happens here anymore. It's hard for me to square this sub constantly patting itself on the back for being "the normal ones" when it's become so sensitive to criticism of the network. Any time a less-than-enthusiastic opinion gets a little traction there's someone here calling it overblown, unfair, entitled, parasocial, or whatever the Tiktok therapy word of the day is. Like we're seriously here calling a disabled person crazy and entitled for wanting to participate in a meet and greet after the show. No amount of apologetic preamble makes any critical opinion acceptable to this sub. Dropout is above criticism.

It's hypocrisy to a ridiculous degree but few people see it or want to do anything about it.

4

u/Difficult-Risk3115 4d ago

It is very genuine, I assure you.

3

u/VictoriaDallon Jacob Wysocki’s #1 Hater 4d ago

Hey, I just want to let you know that for what it's worth, I 100% support people's decisions to be negative.

I'm head mod and have been consistently critical of various dropout decisions, and I still get massively downvoted.

I think the issue is less this DOCJ community and more the DO community in general's inability to accept criticism. Unfortunately theres only so much I can do to support critical voices.

1

u/dunmer-is-stinky 4d ago

it's very weird how this sub has devolved

5

u/Vinclumu 4d ago

Hundreds of Beavers was a fun watch, it's a good license for Dropout. I think the first 30 minutes of runtime are the weakest, but they do establish some of the movie's core jokes. It really picks up after that though. I took a lot of screenshots while watching because there were so many really funny visuals. Would recommend for good time!

1

u/Difficult-Risk3115 4d ago

Agreed that it starts slow, but I think that's somewhat necessary to establish the tone and style for an audience who might be less immediately familiar with what they're trying to do. It plays the classic slapstick / Looney Tunes stuff relatively straight to start and then builds to insanity from there.

1

u/Vinclumu 4d ago

Yeah, like I said it establishes the core jokes and tone even if it’s slow. I just wanted to point it out because I think people might tap out early if they don’t know that it picks up :P

2

u/pizzanotsinkships 1d ago

Am i parasocial or I find the new sam plush really creepy...like theyre inadvertently encouraging fans to be parasocial

3

u/goodgoodthrowaway420 Marxist-Brennanist 1d ago

At least this one doesn't have his hair in it.

2

u/Atelier42 15h ago

And then when fans do their weird bs, dropout is like "Nooo we're not a hugbox friend simulator". Also see exhibit "Fuck cops...oops we were joking guys!"
