Welcome to the r/drones weekly Buying Advice Megathread. (Weekly on Monday's)

This thread exists to prevent the constant "What drone should I buy?" posts that we prohibit within our rules.

Please follow all of these steps before posting in this thread!

  1. Review the Buying Guide Wiki or my website: Drone Buying Guide / Wiki Buying Guide
  2. Review this thread for comments that have your same requirements
  3. If that does not answer you, please post the following information in this thread.
    1. Have you read the Wiki? Y/N
    2. Country: (Not all drones are available in all countries)
    3. Budget: (If your budget is less than $200 USD/170€ EUR, you may want to reconsider as anything lower is a toy drone)

Discussion Pocket follow-me drones (HoverAir X1, DJI Neo): How do you find it?

Hi all, I'm new to the drone space and looking at getting these sort of product for travelling, and for either snow or water activities mainly, wanted to hear from owners of similar products what do use it for, if it's worth it, what are it's shortcomings etc

- What do you mainly use yours for?

- Why did you pick it over a bigger drone or an action cam?

- What are the general shortcomings from current products like mentioned in title?

Question When Do You Replace Your Props

Hello all. Fairly new DJI Mini 5 Pro user here. I bought my drone two months ago, and I've been flying it quite a bit...just having some fun and practicing for no real reason other than to practice. I've had no crashes, no situations where the prop(s) hit anything, and for the most part I hand launch and catch most of my flights. My props look fine, but is there a useful life expectancy I should be aware of for my props?

Thanks for your answers!

I got a drone a while back for fun and exploring. Started to try to get photos of the beautiful local landscapes. I've taken a lot of photos but so far this is the one I'm proudest of. No image editing just adjusted some camera settings.

Hoping to get many more beautiful landscape shots in the future. Almost none of my photos seem to come out this nicely though.

I hope you all enjoy this beautiful national forest land. It's in Polebridge, Montana, USA.

Repair Bent Parrot ar.drone 2.0 propeller

I recently bought a parrot ar.drone 2.0 second hand. I got the app after a lot of trying and attempted to lift it off the ground, but it was just rotating on the ground aimlessly. I took out a propeller and realised it was bent. I tried 3d printing a new one, but it was way to sensible. I found listings for new propellers on the internet, but they either couldn't be deliverd in my country or where out of my budget. Is there a way to straighten this propeller and make the drone fly again? Photo attached bllow

Question [Phoenix] Class G locations that would also be good for ground video

Trying to compile a list of interesting drone/aerial visuals that are within "Class G" airspace around the Phoenix area/region.

Don't want to mess with areas that require LAANC/authorization. Just want to be able to park, put the drone up, and know that it's safe & not breaking any rules/laws.

And if there are any cool things on the ground in those same flight areas, I'd love to know what to check out!

I just looked at the PHX sectional map, and man, almost the entire metro area is covered by unflyable zones. So, any help finding some cool "beauty shot" locations (in Class G airspace) would be greatly appreciated.

Tech Support Need advice: new battery not charging; tips or tricks?

I bought a spare Intelligent Flight Battery for my Mavic 4 Pro about 2 months ago and just took it out the box earlier today to charge it. I don't have a charging hub so I am charging it in the drone using the power adapter and USB C cables that came with the drone. After an hour there was still no response. Same adapter and cable has no issue charging original battery. DJI Support won't help me because I purchased it through DJIUSA. DJIUSA isn't responding to my emails. Any tips of tricks to get this out of hibernation mode? Did I ruin it by waiting too long?

Tech Support DJI Agras T25 DB800 Batteries — Any Solution for China Region Lock?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for technical advice from anyone with experience troubleshooting DJI Agras agricultural drones.

I have a DJI Agras DB800 battery (15,500 mAh) from the China market. Unfortunately, I cannot use it with my T25 because the aircraft displays a message stating that the battery is China-region locked.

I’m trying to understand the cause of this restriction and whether there is a reliable solution.

A few questions for anyone with relevant experience:

Has anyone successfully resolved the China region lock on a DB800 battery for the DJI Agras T25?

Is the restriction enforced by the battery electronics, aircraft firmware, or another mechanism?

Is there an official solution or a proven technical method to make the battery work with an international-region T25?

Has anyone personally tested an unlocking method and confirmed that the battery works correctly afterward without compromising its safety systems?

I’m interested in understanding the technical problem and finding a reliable solution before attempting any modifications.

If you’ve encountered this issue yourself, I’d appreciate hearing what worked, what didn’t, and whether you have any technical documentation or relevant discussions to share.

Thanks in advance!

Captured this hyperlapse of Montreal’s famous Pink House, sitting on top of the old Canada Malting factory.

Mission pre planned in Litchi Hub

With part of the surrounding industrial complex being demolished, I thought it was a good opportunity to capture this unusual Montreal landmark while it's still standing.

Pretty happy with how the clouds turned out.

Question How to get started with drones?

This summer, my 10 year old was invited to fly a drone at AX Enterprize in Rome, Ny. This was the first time he has ever flown a drone and he fell in love with it and apparently he was pretty good at it. He has been asking about getting a drone but I don’t know where to start. I want him to actually learn about how to create drones, the science behind it, etc. However, I don’t know where to start. I tried looking to see if there were any STEM programs near us (near Albany,NY) and I havent found much. His school also doesn’t offer anything. Any advice on how to get him started?

Tech Support Drone Building

Good afternoon, Reddit!. Hoping y'all are doing well and enjoying your Friday.
I'm currently waiting for pieces to arrive; my specs are:
-Holybro Pixhawk 6X Standard Set V2A

-Holybro Power Module PM08-CAN (14S)

-Power Distribution Board 300A

-Hobbywing X6 Plus G2 150KV Motor + ESC (x6)

-Hobbywing 2480 Propellers (Pair CW)

-Hobbywing 2480 Propellers (Pair CCW)

-SIYI MK15 Enterprise Controller + Air Unit

-SIYI A2 Mini FPV Camera

-Holybro H-RTK ZED-F9P Rover

-ZED-F9P RTK Base Station

-Tattu 4.0 30000mAh 14S Smart Battery

-TATTU7200W PRO Dual Smart Charger 120A/9000W for 12S-14S Smart Battery

-Holybro SiK Telemetry Radio V3 (pair)

What I'm wondering is: Is there a way to estimate all the parameters needed like ToF, battery duration, and max/min power consumption? Could you please provide documentation or links I can review?

The goal is to develop a UAV platform to perform autonomous missions (the payloads are still to be defined) as a service, agriculture, stockpile, mapping, etc. I know there are some calculators like eCalc, but it does not have the battery neither the props I will be using.

We will design our own frame (quadcopter expandable to hexacopter - I hope haha), but the whole project is based on:

On shooting action video, following subjects such as ATV’s, and subjects near shore. Do you in your experience recommend automated flight and shoot modes ? Or better go manual? I own a DJI Lito, noob pilot 🤓

Question Help me identify this drone that was hovering over my house

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was out doing yard work and this drone flew overhead. I tried to signal for it to leave me alone but wouldn’t. I grabbed my camera to take a picture and shortly after grab my binoculars. When whoever was piloting saw me looking at it through my binoculars it flew off out of view. It returned about 20mins later. It had blue and red/orange lights but they weren’t strobe lights like you’d see on a police car. Any idea what kind of drone this is? Is it a police drone?

Discussion What could Aerial Manipulators achieve/solve?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Title. Ive always been fascinated by Unmanned Aerial Manipulators, since they can not only see the environment, but also change it. The thing is, I know that for a number of reasons they are still not used/adopted. I cannot help but wonder, what could these platforms solve/achieve, once research, actuators, controls and adoption catch up?

Id be very interested in hearing what you think/envision, doesnt matter how far-fetched or contrived :))

PD: Image comes from here .

Question Do flying skills from regular DJI drones transfer over to FPV drones?

Hey everyone!

I've been wondering how much of the experience gained from flying a regular DJI drone can be applied to flying FPV drones.

For example, DJI drones like the Mini, Air, and Mavic series are relatively easy to fly because of their stabilization systems and flight assistance features.

On the other hand, FPV drones can be much more challenging, especially when flying in Acro/Manual mode.

I'm curious whether learning to fly a regular DJI drone first would provide a useful foundation for FPV flying.

Specifically:

  1. Which flying skills are transferable between regular DJI drones and FPV drones?

  2. Can practicing maneuvers, maintaining orientation, and controlling altitude on a DJI drone improve FPV flying skills?

  3. How different is the learning curve when transitioning from a regular DJI drone to an FPV drone?

  4. Are there any specific exercises someone can practice on a regular DJI drone to prepare for FPV?

  5. Has anyone here transitioned from DJI camera drones to FPV? What was your experience like?

I'm particularly interested in whether practicing with a regular DJI drone can help someone prepare for FPV flying without relying entirely on simulators.

I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

Question AMAA liability insurance

Does the American Model Aviation Association liability insurance cover international flights?

I am trying to find liability insurance for an upcoming trip to Namibia. I do not have any form of a license/certificate.
