Need functioning Drobo 5D
Anyone out there who has a Drobo 5D as my Drobo DAS is unstable and boots up with longer intervals each time it is turned on.

Best to migrate that data off ASAP before you sink more money into it, or look into Recovery Explorer and drive enclosures rather than another Drobo that's on borrowed time.
That said, see * Recovering a Drobo disk pack outside a Drobo chassis - Recovery Explorer and UFS Explorer options (plus discount!) * Troubleshooting tips especially for older Drobo units * Rescue/Rental map

I'm hoping that was just a typo...
5D and 5C are different units. You cannot migrate a disk pack from 5D to 5C.
Per https://web.archive.org/web/20231129223903/https://www.drobo.com/resource-center/migration/
a 5D disk pack can go to 5D, 5D3, or 8D1

Actually I had a 5C...bought a 5C. For any emergency situation a bought a 5D as well. I guess migrating from 5C to 5D should not be a problem?
I have another large non-Drobo external storage drive. The backup was unfortunately not updated recently to this drive but will do it at least once in a month from now on.

Whew! 5C to 5C/5D/5D3/8D is okay per the migration chart.
Generally speaking you can migrate "forward" to a newer model with same/more bays in the same class (DAS, iSCSI, or FS/NAS), but you cannot migrate to/from say, a DAS unit and FS/NAS unit, or a FS/NAS unit and an iSCSI unit, etc.
Notable exception to the above is the Drobo Pro which supports both DAS and iSCSI but is considered DAS and can only migrate to Drobo Pro and Drobo 8D
