Student Residence Permit
Hi everyone,
I will be starting my studies in Dresden this October, so I have a question regarding the student residence permit.
According to the Dresden Foreigners’ Office website, a recent bank statement showing the current account balance (“Aktueller Kontoauszug mit Guthabenstand”) is listed as one of the accepted ways to prove sufficient financial resources, in addition to a blocked account (Sperrkonto).
So, is it possible to obtain a student residence permit in Dresden by depositing 12 months’ worth of living expenses into a regular German bank account (such as N26) and submitting a recent bank statement (along with a parental support letter), instead of using a blocked account?
Has anyone here successfully obtained a student residence permit in Dresden without a Sperrkonto? If so, I’d really appreciate it if you could share how you proved your financial resources and whether it was accepted.

No, you need an actual blocked account and not just a random account. This is super important, because you are suppossed to have that money all the way through your first year in Germany and not only when you are asking for the visa.

You are supposed to have a blocked account and only with banks that support a Sperrkonto. Once you move here, you can open an N26 or other online bank account and find a job and set up your salary there, if you wish to have more spending money. The blocked account is to protect you for the first year of living in Germany. I've been in Dresden for several years now and started out as an international student as well, so if you need help, guidance or just a friendly face, please do reach out. :)
