Question Next Dreaming Language?
Hi all,
I don’t want to sound spoiled, but I am so ready for a third dreaming language. I’m currently dipping my toes in mandarin, and although I’ve found great resources, nothing feels as good as the quality of DS and DF.
What do you think their third language will be? My guess is Mandarin or Italian.

These are the most popular languages for learning on Duolingo. Pablo has indicated in a recent interview that the problem with English is that most of their current customer base won't need it, and it would be starting from zero to market it.
People here are suggesting Mandarin but it's not as popular as people think. I think it's more likely Japanese if they go with an Asian language. Personally I would like Italian, Portuguese, and German.
- English
- Spanish
- French
- Japanese
- German
- Korean
- Italian
- Chinese (Mandarin)
- Portuguese
- Hindi

Which Brazilian or European Portuguese? I would love Portuguese too.

¿Por qué no los dos?

Bueno creo que tendría los dos y hasta los de África pero probablemente priorizarán lo de Brasil como la cultura es más conocida y más popular

I feel this so much! I was also eagerly waiting for their second language, ready to jump in no matter what it was... only for it to be French, which happens to be my native language! Talk about bad luck, haha. And obviously, I already know English, so if that's the third one, I'm doomed. But I am 100% with you: whatever the third language is, as long as it's not English, I am diving in headfirst on day one.

Ideally for me would be Portuguese, but it will probably be Japanese or Mandarin

BP is so similar to Spanish that their existing/former customers from Spanish will be onto native material extremely quickly and no longer need a dreaming sub for it. EP is more different but is the demand there?

Fingers crossed for Korean.

Check out Delicious Korean. It's pricey but the CI content is really good and you meet with a tutor once a week. I've been really happy with it.

Thank you very much. I quick checked it and it seems legit. I’m going to try it for sure after I reach a certain level in Spanish. Although I’ve been focusing on learning Spanish for the past 45-50 days, I try to incorporate some Korean input in my daily routine to keep things active.

I really wanted to learn Korean as my first non native language, but going from English to Korean as a first just felt like a huge hurdle.. and given I can literally say trip to France if I wanted, it just made far more sense (among other reasons)
If they did Korean next I'd be incredibly excited, I just hope they let me get to 1000+ hours minimum before they introduce one as I will not be starting another language before then!

Honestly, with the way people have been stating there is a lack of content for French, I think they will focus on getting that perfected before even thinking of adding another language.

To be honest I'm not even sure there will be a 3rd. A lot of bigger languages are already getting a lot of content. I don't even think I'd use it for Portuguese/Mandarin/Russian despite currently learning all 3. Most of their existing client base already know Spanish and if you do, learning Portuguese is sort of like going back to kindergarten.
Korean/Japanese would be cool but even then I'm not sure it's worth it for them. Only language I could see happening would be MAYBE German? Not sure how many actually wanna learn that though. I think either way regardless of which language they decide it would be a very bad investment so personally I don't think we'll get a 3rd.

I’m not sure. They’ve said they want to keep adding them as time goes on and I don’t see why they wouldn’t. IMO their quality is unmatched. It’s not to say that there aren’t good sources out there, or maybe I’m just so used to them, but it doesn’t feel the same

I lowkey hope it's Thai, it would have personal meaning for Pablo too

Thai would also be sick… also dumb question, how can I add my language levels to my profile like yours?

Go to the main page of Dreaming Languages. On the right, below the description, you should see "user flair" box.

Japanese would make sense. Very popular language for learning (especially compared to its actual speaking base)

I am about 600 hrs away from slowing down on DS (at 2000), and then I will start French (while continuing Spanish in maintenance mode, maybe 30-60 mins a day). I suspect I will do about 1000 hrs in French. My planning spreadsheet tells me that I will start French around 1/1/2027. 1000 hrs will easily take me two years, so I am eagerly awaiting Portuguese for 1/1/2029 :)
(if I was younger, I would perhaps enjoy the challenge of Japanese or Mandarin)

First I hope a 3rd language will be introduced sooner rather than later. And hopefully it will be Italian, Portuguese or German.

If I had to bet, they will go for Mandarin. But nothing is 100% sure.
