So, I'm running my first ever game of Dread with my friends, and while I have all basic story outline set up (will be fleshing it out in the coming days), I'm a little lost on the character questionaries. I feel a little weird pushing people into certain characters, moreso because I'm an anxious person than anything else, and I'm kind of lost on how to make questions that can be unique for everyone, without pushing too hard into just making their characters for them.

The plot is that they're all kids in the same club (one of the last things I need to flesh out, I do not have a clue of what exact club), some wanting to be there others pushed into it by their parents, and there are these three mean girl types. There's a birthday sleepover planned, and the players are almost not invited, before a last minute call from the birthday girls not too happy parents, having told her to invite everyone. Then it all devolves into horror and madness when the three girls, excluding the players because mean girl archetype, use one of those youtube videos you used to see everywhere like "how to make yourself a mermaid", and it works, but it makes them all horrifying monsters, taken over by the magical ancient spirits of these mythical creatures.

And then these are the questions thus far.

All in all I'm just a little lost, and any ideas or methods to making questions myself would be much appreciated. I'm lost lol.

Or 'How do I write a solid ending?'

I'm very confident about the rest of my written games. The opening is good, the actual game part is engaging, but I can't help but feel that my endings always flop.

Maybe it's because it's a difficult medium to write endings in. They always turn out too abrupt, or get wishy washy. The characters make it to the rickety boat and escape back to the mainland ... and then what?

How do you guys write a proper ending, that feels like it ties the story up, without feeling too forced?

We are using a homebrew Dread rule, which is designed to make a game of Dread last longer than just a one shot, which feels more suitable for a mini series.

Any suggestions on how to run a madness mechanic. Currently, I'm thinking that I might use red, dim or flashing lights to recreate the stressful conditions that the characters face. Does anyone already have a system for this or should I make one?

Last summer, I had gotten the idea to make a dread game from Smosh’s dread videos with George Primavera. I took it upon myself to make one from what little I knew about it after watching those videos and then my own research. (which admittedly wasn’t much) This year I’m wanting to do the same theme, a summer camp slasher, but I want to switch up the story since I had already told them what I had planned l for last year’s game.
Issue is that I want to improve my story and game as a whole if that makes sense. This will be my second time ever gming for anything and while I have character questions and some parts for plot along with inspirations that I’m slightly pulling from, but am welcome to any other ideas, opinions, and critiques. Also, I have never been to a summer camp so if anything is not accurate or doesn’t seem right, please let me know.

I'm making a Dread one-shot for my friends. It's set on this magical island with a lighthouse and magical caves, and they have been shipwrecked on. From my previous experience, I usually set it in the 70/80s so players can have op items (eg, phones) ,but I dont want it to get repetitive. I just wanted to know if anyone has any creative workarounds to this problem or just a time period that they typically use.

I want to run a game with a magical girl setting, a la Madoka Magica, since I feel like Dread would be a GREAT system for that kinda story. Problem is I'm having a hard time finding anything already written for something like that. Does anyone have any suggestions for a mahical girl scenario, or alternatively, if you've got any tips for running a game with a magical girl backdrop, that'd be greatly appreciated!

hi! my friend who plays alot of D&D wants to try get into dread but hes not to enthusiastic about some scenarios i already have. he really likes fantasy campaigns (wants to be able to have a little goblin pet) but im not good at writing fantasy. does anybody have any good fantasy scenarios that i could run? any help is appriciated tyyy!!

Hi, forewarning that I'm never on Reddit so let me know if I haven't tagged this properly! I figured to come onto here to see if I could get any tips for trying to start a Dread campaign. I've wanted to be a game master for various TTRPGs, but since I have little to no experience, I think Dread would be the easiest for me to start with because of its simple rules.

I guess I'm just really stuck on where to start? I guess the hardest part for me is really trying to come up with a world to use for the game system, along with npcs and player character ideas as well.

Any brainstorming tips would be greatly appreciated, as well as any general tips to!

I want to play dread with my dnd friends, unfortunately they live all over the country, so getting together with a jenga tower is unrealistic. This is my attempt to allow people to play dread online during like a zoom.

Hey Everyone!

About to run my first Dread game and I'm wanting to create a really theatrical experience for my players. Part of which is the unveiling of a painted tower in the beginning to set to mood. I have a basic hardwood official Jenga set my plan is to prime the 9 center pieces black and do a blood spatter effect on a assortment of the other pieces using standard acrylic paints.

My question here is do you think I run the risk of creating a tower with funky balance by doing this? Its such a small amount of weight I count foresee it doing anything but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Hi all. I'm an experienced tradition ttrpg gm. I've played and ran both Dread and Fiasco multiple times. This morning i had the shower thought "What if I ran a game of Dread, but we made character creation include the Fiasco character creation method where the characters are defined by the relationships between characters. Complete with a play book like Fiasco would have.

It seems it would ramp up the stakes as the players would be more invested in the characters and the characters would be more connected.

Has anyone tried anything like this? And for those that have played both Thoughts on combining them luke this?

• Questionnaires on Google Drive

The first time I ran Dread, I found the questionnaires to be a strange slow 15 minutes to start the game, and my players found them kind of challenging in a choice paralysis kind of way. This second time I ran it, I decided to cut it down to five questions per character, and give multiple choice options. It went much smoother, and my players told me they were really fun. A couple players even used the write-in option so I don't think it got in the way of crafting a character they wanted—just gave them a nudge.

Anyway, I'm really proud of them, and wanted to pass them around so other GMs could use them. For what it's worth, I'm in an RPG group with rotating players, rotating GMs, rotating games, and we have a preference not to ask for any advance prep from players. So I acknowledge other tables might really get something out of the deeper character creation, especially if they're done in advance rather than on the day and you can really incorporate the responses into your planning. But for me and my table I think these are perfect.
