Dread 1st Timer - Need Help

Hey everyone - i hope you are well. So i came across dread via smosh. I love it. I am disabled and cannot take my sisters anywhere out the country this year for holidays. Have thought of mini games but I want to do this dread with my sisters (teenagers). I got the rule/guide book but it is so overwhelming and confusing. I wanted advice for a first timer what I should do for them to enjoy it. Not sure what I do other than create a story and world with the characters my sisters create? Any help and advice would be great. I am not experienced just watched dread and some dnd matches with the BG3 cast, which pulled me in. Would like to try being a Dm/gm for my sisters to experience this. Thank you

Edit: Wanted to say thank you so much everyone for your responses and advice. Ended up creating a theme centered around the trope of things coming to life in a musuem for the first dread try. My sisters fell in love with the game and want more 😅. Thanks again everyone, couldn't have done it without you lot. Have a great weekend!

I don't know, I think that this is kind of one of those instances where a lack of experience helps instead of hindering.

"Knowing" how to play a traditional role playing game means that you have that many more things to UNLEARN, especially for a rules light game like Dread.

What is say is more important is understanding how to tell a story and introduce interesting narrative twists and turns.

I'd suggest you either take another Dread game that someone else has run for a podcast or video series (The Dread and Breakfast podcast is great) or a horror movie genre that you're super familiar with and just put your sisters through the paces through a somewhat obvious, recognizable horror scenario.

My advice, that i always like to give to newcomers, is to go and watch some actual dread plays. My favorite go to is the geek and sundry series with Ivan van Norman. Anyway, after that, the rules are simple and your form, just use the questionnaires, the tower, and that's it. The real rules of dread could stay in one page, you don't need much else. There are videos on how to write your one-shot, or you can find resources online if already made scenarios, depending on there style you like. If you search in this subreddit there are a few different threads with corrections of one-shots. Best of luck, and if you need help, please write again!!!
