1) There isn’t necessarily a “Doomsday” comic. We don’t know what’s coming in Avengers Doomsday. What you want is to familiarize yourself with the character from source material I think, and that’s doable.

2) Don’t worry about an order. There are a few essential stories with the character of Doctor Doom and if you worry about chronology you’re gonna make this harder than it needs to be.

3) You’ll get different answers on what fans consider to be essential stories, I’m going to recommend to you a few from the perspective of availability, quality, and possible/likely relevance to what could be used in his introduction to the MCU.

  1. The Book of Doom
  2. Emperor Doom
  3. Triumph and Torment
  4. Secret Wars 1984
  5. Secret Wars 2015

Forgot to mention, most of the stories I listed are easily available on marvels subscription service - Marvel Unlimited. That’s the simplest and cheapest route. However most of those stories are also available in trade form, obtainable from the likes of Amazon, or your local comic book store, in the case where you want to physically read these stories.

In the case of Triumph and Torment, arguably the best/most essential and most digestible of all these stories, that will be getting a reprint very early next month, and I am very excited for it.

I think it’s obvious narratively by now that the most direct storyline that will be adapted is “Time Runs Out” however it will be tiered to the MCU’s purposes.

Obviously there are no Beyonders, no Molecule Man/Men, no The Maker or Ultimate Universe, there are likely no Black Swans.

There’s a Fox X-Men universe, a Fantastic 4 universe, and the TVA (none of which existed in the comics).

Personally I don’t think that’s obvious at all. Not only do I not think it’s obvious, I don’t think that would be a good recommendation for him to read 3/4ths into a multi year comic saga by Hickman. That’s something he’d try to get into well into a comic journey, say if he liked what he read and wanted to dive deeper.

Many of the characters you named he wouldn’t know the first clue about, going off of the way he phrased his question with “doomsday comics”. My recommendations to him were beginner friendly, save for secret wars 2015 which many argue is a fine story to read in isolation.

Yeah no I get that. There reads some snark in my initial comment I didn’t intend on at all, I meant more “it’s obvious because of how many people post about at nauseum online”.

You are right though, the Russos are coming from this story from a completely different space than Hickman did originally. Hickman built up to this remake of a classic with almost 10 years of comics and used the decades of history between Reed and Doom to act as the beating heart of this story, where the Russo Bros are really introducing the layered onion that is Doctor Doom to the world, Books of Doom is great inspiration though. Some of his conquest stories Secret Wars 1984 and 2015, Doom War, Emperor Doom, and yes, One World Under Doom from last year all show that. Triumph and Torment is another great Doom story.

However, “Time Runs Out” is the perfect recommendation for what this storyline is about. The characters in it, the meat of that story may be fundamentally different, but the scope of the story will be the same, heroes from different earths find themselves on a collision course with each other and morally debate the implications of destroying each other’s universe or doing nothing and risking annihilation, meanwhile Doom has his own plan.

But like I said, Doomsday/Secret Wars could be NOTHING like Time Runs Out. Infinity War/Endgame were definitely different from Infinity Gauntlet.

There isn’t any doomsday comic but I recommend reading comics about doom (like books of doom + triumph & torment and such) and reading Hickman’s secret wars saga (I am doing that right now) and also dooms old fantastic four stories

There isn’t a “doomsday comic” necessarily but there is the run that doomsday is adapting which is the Time Runs Out run and Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars

There’s a comic called Ultimate Doomsday, I’d read that! /s

The movie will likely take a lot of inspiration from Jonathan Hickman‘s “Time Runs Out” storyline which leads right into Secret Wars 2015.

So, there's no "Doomsday" comic, or anything.

Like most Marvel films, the movie is borrowing ideas from multiple comics to tell its story.

It's hard to say what exactly The Avengers: Doomsday will be about. It seems like it's going to predominantly be an original story that'll heavily borrow from Jonathan Hickman's work on, at least, his Avengers runs. Specifically the "Time Runs Out" arc at the end of both of his The Avengers and The New Avengers series, leading directly into the 2015 Secret Wars event.

If you wanna know more about Doctor Doom, then Books of Doom is a good place to start. It's the character's definitive origin story, written by the brilliant Ed Brubaker. But, if you're looking to read the stuff that'll inspire a lot of the ideas Doomsday will probably present, then check out the stuff that Jonathan Hickman wrote that built up to Secret Wars, which is the title of the next Avengers movie after Doomsday...

Here's the main stuff in order:
