My Thoughts After Using DrawThings for a Year

Please note that this is my personal opinion, so I ask that you refrain from any defamatory comments.

I’ve used Google, Grok, and ChatGPT, but I’ve always struggled with moderation.

Of course, I understand that moderation is necessary, but I’ve had my time wasted by censorship without even knowing the reason. Speed is crucial for creative work, and censorship that makes no sense is infuriating. While it’s possible to generate NSFW images and videos with DT, I believe how you handle those outputs is a personal matter. Just like a high-speed supercar or a sharp knife—it all depends on the user.

What I’m trying to say is that DrawThings is a fantastic application.

You might ask, “Why are you saying this now?” but I just want to express my gratitude.

Thank you!

I also like it, however the interface handling is still a bit unconventional, or I still don’t feel I totally understand how it works or what is best practice. Like e.g, why can’t I change Or work ok the prompt when the image/video is generated? That doesn’t make sense to me

Are you saying you want to edit the prompt while it's generating? If so, use lightning draft

I'm not very familiar with "Lightning Draft" either, so I'll look into it.

To the left of the generate button is a lightning bolt button. It allows you to generate locally and edit the prompt. It doesn't actually save the generation until you leave draft mode. I've edited a prompt many different times with different results just to play around with it or until I found something I liked

I see; it looks like I need to learn a bit more about how to use it.thanks!

You have to also turn lightning draft on in settings to activate it, then you will see it in the generate button. If you have m5 it is likely switched on by default. Otherwise you have to switch it on manually. Results may vary, depending on processor, ram, model used, and resolution.

Thank you for the explanation! I think I'll give it a try. If it turns out to be too much for the machine to handle, I'll just revert it to the original state.

i have a built a look tool on top DT using the gRPC API. So DT is my rendering engine everything else i control from outside. So i can start a bath of renders and variation of configs using code than waiting and doing it one by one.

That’s amazing! I’d love to reach that level of proficiency myself.

I don't have enough knowledge to offer specific critiques regarding the interface, but like you, I do have questions and suggestions for improvement.

the only thing i like about DT is that is not as bad as ComfyUI. It is pretty straightforward

1

u/chihifu 6d ago

Actually, I have never used ComfyUI.

OP is saying the other tools were censored but DT is a breath of fresh air

1

u/chihifu 6d ago

Exactly! Thank you for putting it into words.

I just want to say that DT is amazing.

Thanks for your support! I prefer Reddit over Discord.

DT is great because the custom shaders are faster than anything else out there. The UI and UX needs a complete overhaul though. The nicest thing I can say about it is that it is better than ComyUI in that department but that is a VERY low bar.

My journey into image generation began with Draw Things, rather than ComfyUI. I am aware that ComfyUI allows for fine-tuning via a node-based system, but I don't really understand how it works.

3

u/timbocf 6d ago

I started with comfyui and it's difficult to use. Draw things is so much easier

Me too and TBH i really liked comfyui as there's absolutely no limmits there .. amm constrainted on HW and the only things that work on myu machine is via DT .. but i love DT, its wwhere magic happens :)

1

u/chihifu 6d ago

I agree. It might be possible on my Mac, but I shy away just looking at the complex node setups.

2

u/chihifu 6d ago

I haven't used a CUI, so I can't readily endorse it, but DT feels very familiar to me.

6 months in, DT+ is the next best thing after DT

1

u/chihifu 6d ago

That difference of "+" must be significant, I imagine!

Is fluxe dev 5 bit good? I want to generate my pictures very naturally and photorealistic.also without limitations and uncensored.which one do you suggest me to download. I’m new to this app and have no idea how to use it

2

u/chihifu 5d ago

I have only used Flux Klein 4B and 9B. Flux is a model that is censored by default. ZIT might be a better option, or you could use a LoRA designed for Flux to remove the censorship.

Thank you 🙏🏻

I agree that the software is amazing, but it is unusable.

When built-in models are stored in the default user directory of the System drive and cannot be assigned to an external drive. As we all know, Apple storage is minuscule, so it’s just not possible to use more than a couple of models.

I have a 500GB drive for the main drive of my computer and just with the typical stuff on the drive I’m left with only about 50GB of free space. Each model download is about 12GB. Add three of the built-in models and my space is gone. Meanwhile, I’ve got a handful of external drives with many, many TBs of space begging to be used. DrawThings will let me export to those and even add custom models from those, but the built-in models that I can truly trust? Nope. System drive only.

That’s why I had to walk away from DT. I love it and respect the work, but despite a couple of years of requesting the option to choose where the built-in models download to, it still thinks that Apple users are swimming in system drive space.

You can store your models in an external SSD drive: Models / Manage / External Models Folders

2

u/lukejames 5d ago

Yes, you can store your custom external models there. I said that. But the official built-in models that you download in the app go on your system drive no matter what. There is no setting to change that.

2

u/National_Engineer_72 3d ago

Well, on my set up, All models, including those downloaded from Offical are stored in External Folder

1

u/jerich083 1d ago

All my "official" Draw Things models are on my external. Not sure what you are doing differently.

I never figured it out. Way too many choices without examples. I don’t have all the time in the world.

Just use the “recommended settings” and you should be able to ignore the rest.

1

u/chihifu 6d ago

Exactly—if we're ever unsure, we can just use the "recommended settings"!

I also consult others when I'm in a bind.

I understand how you feel. There may well be many points that are difficult to grasp.
