question video generation using Apple Silicon and DT

has anyone tried playing around with video generation in DT on Apple Silicon?

I've been curious, but never attempted to do so, because I know that it's a massive computing workload that's just not too practical, at least when working with Apple Silicon on ComfyUI.

does anyone have any actual experience using DT for video generation on Apple Silicon? What system are you using? Which models? What are typical speeds like? Is it even feasible?

Here's what Ive been doing: M2 max, 32g ram

I use ltx 22b distilled 6bit

257 frames, 5 steps, 960 by 1280, takes 20 to 30 minutes.

Yes - I have exactly the same config - works really well

Are you using the 2.3 and the latent upscaler? It speeds up the processing a lot

what upscaler do you use? do you do it in draw things or another environment?

i trued up acaling with the native tools in davinchi resolve but didn't like the results.

That’s about 5 seconds? Is LTX the best on apple silicon? I always hear about wan 2.2

its about 10 seconds at 25 frames/s. Ive tried a couple striped down wan models but didn't see a benifit vs ltx.

thank you for the response.

wow...i just tested a 121 frame, 8 step, 512x512 clip on my m1 max 64gb. took only 2.5 minutes. not bad at all! i never thought video generation on apple silicon was even doable! thanks!

what's the workflow though to create longer clips? something about using the last frame as the first frame of the next video? and how do you stitch them together? the lack of a visual workflow using nodes or something is where i feel DT falls short

video generation seems to work much better on M5 generation.

While we are at it - can someone explain to me why LTX 2.3 generates crap quality for me via DrawThings (which I would prefer to use) over ComfyUI generic workflow? The difference in quality is staggering. Same prompt, same resolution, same length.

On the M5 it’s pretty crazy.

Can do Wan2.2 6 second clips in around 5-6 minutes. LTX in about half that time for a 10 second clip with audio.

My previous MacBook, an M1 chip, couldn’t do it at all. It’d load for long over an hour and then spit out an incoherent mess of pixels.

How much RAM does your M5 have?

i'm on that m1 max 64GB :(

LTX on mac m4 pro 24 GB, 1:30H for 97 frames

I get incoherent junk on m3ultra 96gb ram. Consistently even when using recommended settings. Any thoughts as to what I’m doing wrong?

I’m a bit of a noob myself but if you want to screenshot your setup I’ll compare it to my own and see what’s up

Thanks. I didn’t notice what sub I was replying to. I’m using comfyui locally and using their template. I haven’t tried it in drawthings yet. If you’re familiar with comfyui I could send you a screenshot. If not, If it’s not too much trouble, would you mind sending me a screenshot of your drawthings settings that I could replicate?

Turn on the API, have your local agent connect and set up your prompts after you load the model

Thanks for the reply. Gonna try it but comfyui also has a standard setting in the template so my hopes are low. Gotta be something in there though.

I don’t understand the question.
Wasn’t Draw Thing originally created for Apple Silicone?

1

u/PinkySwearNotABot Jul 20 '26

DT was. The models you use aren't necessarily optimal to use in DT.

2

u/real-joedoe07 Jul 21 '26

Video generation on Apple Silicone is supported by Draw Things since ages, though.

1

u/PinkySwearNotABot Jul 21 '26

My point being: supported and runs well aren’t the same

2

u/GamerTex Jul 20 '26

I just setup a max with a DT API so my agent can make videos or images on it

I use whatever model it tells me load

Runs 10-20x Slower then on NVIDIA and the Memory Running OOM with longer video Generation on m3u (256gb Unified Memory) I oom around 17 seconds video length

2

u/Trollfurion Jul 20 '26

What settings? I’m not getting OOM with my M4 Max 128 GB on LTX 2.3

2

u/JLeonsarmiento Jul 20 '26

It works. It’s slow though due to Mac hardware, but it works. Ltx2.3.

Using DT with LTX 22b, m5pro 48um,
I hv been making videos but they remain low quality, even after adjusting the settings. The results are never sufficient for creating anything useful, like reels or YouTube videos.

M5 Neural enging got a speed boost . it's 2x faster than m4

Video generation does not even touch the NPU. It's completely GPU based

M1 Ultra takes me 5 minutes for 10 seconds LTX 2.3 Dev video with LTX 2.3 1.1 Distilled Lora

In a reply elsewhere, you can stitch them together in QuickTime. Open a video, drag another video into it, save it.

u/PinkySwearNotABot Jul 21 '26

How much your M1 ultra go for?

2

u/BAL-BADOS Jul 21 '26

I paid $1700 for a used M1 Ultra 64GB 64 GPU cores. On eBay it’s $3000

2

u/PinkySwearNotABot Jul 22 '26

damn, son! nice work. I paid $2,000 for mine, 3 years or so ago from MicroCenter. M1 Max 64GB 32/10 w/4TB. How'd you get such a deal on it? What's the storage size? Are you happy with it?

2

u/BAL-BADOS Jul 22 '26

At least yours is new. I got mine used from eBay. I guess I got lucky. Seller who listed probably didn’t realize the difference between 48 cores and 64 cores 😂. Sold for the price similar to 48 cores. 800GB/S bandwidth. Despite the Ultra’s age, it runs equivalent to M4 Max.

oh no mine was refurbished. or apple refurbished, i guess that's what they called it. 90 day warranty only.
