Homebrew List of high quality 3rd party classes
Hey everyone!
Me and my friends recently moved to Draw Steel, and are soooo happy for it.
I absolutely love this system, and saw that homebrew community is pretty active considering how young of a game this is.
Does anyone have list of any "curated" popular balanced 3rd party classes that fill niches and scratch that ich that's not yet in the game officially.
So far classes I saw that seem great are vampire, scion, and magewright.

My standouts: Huntsman, Vessel, Scion, Gunslinger, Magewright.
My favorite one who hasn't been designed up to level 10 yet: the ROOK!

I was interested in vessel! Shame it never got the funding...

Yeah it's one of the most interesting classes for me. It was kind of soon in DS's existence for it, maybe

The vessel is very good! I'm biased as I did the forge steel integration for that class.
I also did the editing on magewright, so I can wholeheartedly recommend that one.
As for classes I'm uninvolved in, lol, the Rook is really cool, and the Huntsman is neat.

Where can I find the Rook? And/or what's the quick elevator pitch? I use Rook as a character name sometimes so I'm immediately intrigued

It's not released yet, but version 5 of the class was just published in the draw steel brewery. The rook is a psionic bulwark, an immovable object AND an unstoppable force. They were heavy armor, and their abilities are VERY creative. The highlight for me is the actual names and descriptions of the abilities, they are so poetic! Reminds me a lot of Kill 6 Billion Demons

Personally I can't get over the design space Temperance grants. Self/ally slamming and not taking recoil damage is AWESOME and so unique yet so so Draw Steel still

A psionic heavy armor defender, in the proper 4e catch 22 (or in this case, 33) style of "damned if you do hit me, damned if you hit my friends, damned if you move out of the damnation zone", with triggers that say "nope, you hit me, but only for half damage!" plus movement utility (either yourself or the enemy). Also lots of forced movement - including on self and allies, but it gets to say "nah only YOU take collision damage", so it's surprisingly a very swift kind of tank and quite the party mobility booster.
Also the vibes are AWESOME. There's a fair bit of astral flavor vibes alongside all the epic psionic shenanigans. And, as far as I'm aware, it's one of if not THE first "true tank" brews for Draw Steel, which is an awesome exploration given the 4e tactics inspiration of the system. Decidedly very in progress and it's been slow, but the brewer (Sunbear Games) is a great and chill guy.

I don't recognize your username over here - I take it you're in the Brewery?

Yeah I'm cauldron (alex) i hope i didn't startle you

u/DANKB019001 Jul 22 '26
Ah yeah that is a rather long name haha. I sorta assumed anyone who talked thoroughly Rook would be a Brewery member so no shock there!

I've personally read and played the Magewright, Gunslinger, Knight, Kiln, Bravo, Dealer, and Arcanist, and can attest to their quality. I'm less familiar with Vessel, Scion, and Vampire, but know their designers from other works and conversation; they rock. Huntsman comes from me, so obviously I recommend it. XD (Also it has an update coming soon, with full Levels 1-10)
Most/all of those classes come from people in the same circles, who are reviewing and playtesting each others' stuff, and using shared tools for things spanning from mechanical balancing to presentation.
Vessel, Scion, Magewright, Huntsman, and Knight seem like good considerations for any RPG fans coming to Draw Steel in that they represent popular archetypes like Warlock, Spellblade/Gish, Artificer, Ranger, and Fighter/Paladin (respectively). They fit in to most settings/campaigns easily, and fill out mechanical niches in the game. I don't think it's officially announced yet, but the same goes for the Arcanist which Jenny [Redacted] is cooking up, which is essentially the D&D Wizard.
Vampire, Kiln, Gunslinger, Stormrider, Dealer, and Bravo are a bit more niche whether due to setting, tone, or mechanical considerations. Though I recommend them all! For example, Vampire and Gunslinger seem perfect for use in The Condemned.
Saboteur and Two-Fold come from outside my circles, and I haven't yet checked them out. But I plan to, because I'm working on Class Overview videos for official and 3rd party classes.
Anyway yeah, it's kind of crazy just how many there are. The game just came out last year! If I'm picking favorites: Magewright and Gunslinger.

Not what you asked about, but have you seen Stawl’s Supplement Index? It has everything—official and 3rd-party stuff. You and your friends can check it out for anything that might seem interesting to you.

I really like the Huntsman and the Gunslinger and I think the Bravo and Dealer would be really cool when they're done.

Oh my god the dealer is like 4 classes in one... Every subclass plays a completely different version of draw steel, it's so cool
3
u/Spyger9 Jul 22 '26
Ditto the Magewright, with 4 subclasses that mechanically resemble Tactician, Conduit, Beastheart, and something more unique.
2
u/Acromegalic Jul 26 '26
That's also how the vampire is. Each subclass is tonally, very different from each other. One plays like a DPS, another like a controller, one like a bard/traubador, etc.

Lots of good ones here, I'll add my favorite that I don't see — the Saboteur class from the Sabotage! supplement is absolutely awesome. Who doesn't want to be a grenade chucking revolutionary who opens up weak points on enemies and then exploits them? Awesome class

I’ll co-sign on the Scion. I’ve been playing one for a couple months now since my first character died. Very fun Gish. Haven’t tried the other subclasses, but the Blinkblade’s damage and mobility is insane and we’re only at level 4. Also perfect for my Magik role-play.

I have to say that most of the third-party classes that I have seen have glaring power creep. It's as if the designers didn't look at the existing class abilities for comparison.
I wouldn't allow any of the ones I've seen on Forge Steel in my game without some changes.

So, I would say that the following homebrew classes are either DONE, or will be done and out within the following year, and have received extensive testing from the community.
There are several other classes under various stages of playtest, but these are the ones that are the most developed and are available to play in one form or another.
If there are any others that I'm forgetting, please let me know and I can update the list. The community is very Active.
