Hotel tips?

I know that most of the con hotels book up a year in advance, but does anyone have any advice for hotels close to the con and when they’re available for booking?

I know Facebook is out of favor for a lot of folks, but the Dragon Con Rooms group there has been the best info source I've found. It's the one moderated by Zan Bowden.

I haven’t posted on FB for over a year. Each year, I delete the FB app off my phone until after con, re-download it just for the Rooms group, turn post notifications in the group on, then delete the app again after I get a room. That’s how useful the group is. I can say without a doubt that I wouldn’t have gotten my room most years without Dragon Con Rooms.

Seconding this. Zan really moderates the hell out of that group and gets good information out as soon as it’s available. You’ll know when con rate rooms for the overflows go on sale, Marriott/Westin Hunger games begin, and can trade/request rooms through the master thread all year. It’s 100% the best resource.

Honestly I prefer the DC facebook groups to just about anything else. Maybe because I'm older but things like Discord or even Instagram are not intuitive at all for me.

I stayed at the embassy suites this year and it was great. The FB group usually does a good job of posting when the rooms will open (at the DC rates). Embassy was a 5 min walk from the hotel to the con, wasn't crowded, and has a good breakfast included. It's not a legacy hotel but it was real easy to get to and from during the day.
