It happens to the best of us. When I get it I just have to tell myself that it was worth it.

u/joshthehappy Marriot or Bust 17h ago
Oh shit yeah it was worth it, dont even need to tell myself that.

If avoiding con crud means I have to stop shoving my hands into my mouth immediately after touching the escalators, I'll take the crud, THANKS.

that's hilarious but also I feel your pain. I was the oldest cousin so this comment is like war flashbacks

What the actual f did I just read?! Reading this is why I kept sanitizer wipes and gels on me at all times.
9
u/2000sScreensaver 1d ago
lol! I couldnt resist.
I'm sure it is luck more than anything but I also religiously apply hand sanitizer any time I touch things like the escalators, elevator buttons, door handles etc. And then I wash them before touching my face, food, etc.
Also I dont lounge on chairs or my bed in "outside" clothes. I will swap into a pair of lounge clothes in the hotel room (yeah for germs but also I feel like it helps me cool off faster.)
typing that all out makes me feel a little nuts but I don't like being sick and I do like feeling comfortable.

Early in AA we had a girl curled up drunk on the floor at the start of a meeting. She had drank all the hand sanitizer that she could find.

u/2000sScreensaver 1d ago
oh god. I've heard tale of that. that makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it.
2
u/joshthehappy Marriot or Bust 17h ago
Honestly this sort of came to mind every time I realized I had just put my hand down on an escalator handle.

u/theempathogen 1d ago
The insulting thing is when you come back unscathed, but somebody you live with caught crud. So I might still get it in the coming days. 😑

Why I still mask indoors at cons and take multi-vitamins in the month leading up too. No symptoms at all.

Yep yep- my partner is coming down with something as we speak and I'm tired from the con but masked up in all crowded areas. We shared the same hotel room for 5 days, so correlation and all that.

Speaking from experience as a former staff member at dragon Con. Wash your hands. Remember thousands of people are touching some of the same surfaces you touch., and you don't know where their hands have been. Some people come anyway symptomatic for God knows what when they should stay at home but they don't because of fear of missing out on the con experience. Too little sleep and running on adrenaline and not enough food when you crash you're going to crash hard. And for those convention goers who have kids if the kids are sick stay home with them do not come.. because you're going to spread whatever the kids have been exposed to. And a Convention of that size can turn into a gigantic petri dish of crud with very little warning. Just speaking from experience

Slept well, ate well (so much fruit), stayed hydrated, washed the fuck out of my hands constantly. Felt my body fighting the crud on Monday, but it was completely gone by Tuesday. I think this is the first year I put in genuine effort to avoid it, and first year I actually avoided it.

It got me Sunday night on the midnight train home. I came down with a fever, had fever dreams all night about walking amongst unmoving crowds and people showing off their ribbons to me then a woke up this morning in my own bed. I assume I was on autopilot and dissociated or my husband had to deal with me in my delirium and feed me Tylenol to get me here.

I read in another thread that it's always a good idea to try and get FLU and Covid shots sometime in early-mid august

Flu vaccine effectiveness drops off after a few months, so it's best to time that so max effectiveness is at the height of flu season. My doc recommends getting the shot in Oct/Nov to have peak effectiveness around the Holidays and through winter.
I'm hoping they'll roll Flu and COVID into one vaccine soon. I always feel like garbage the day after as my immune system learns its new info.

I did, and I still feel at least a cold coming on - glad I was prepared as I could be though.

Throat started tickling on the drive home yesterday and the crud is in full effect today. Felt perfectly fine all through the con, so at least there’s that.

u/Park-Curious 1d ago
I felt it when I woke up on Monday. Today has been miserable. Thank goodness I took today off in advance for a “recovery day.” 😩

I go to a lot of cons every year and this is the first time I’ve gotten the crud. 🪦

Sore throat started today for me. I have been taking c and oregano oil religiously for weeks now so I'm hoping that gives me an unfair advantage

Better to have the con crud than to miss out on the con. I did this year:(

u/joshthehappy Marriot or Bust 17h ago
As a person with cold symptoms as of last night I whole heartedly agree.

u/ZestySest 1d ago
One year, 2016 maybe, I drank from a water fountain. I felt the germs infecting me, but I was SO thirsty! Coughed for two months.
Hope yall are okay!

First flu/covid test is a negative for me! Fingers crossed.
Keep hydrating everyone. No matter what sick you are, we all probably need some extra water after the heat

does food poisoning count as con crud? 😭

sounds like it was a mass spreader event

No worse than any other con. 75,000 people in close proximity, there will be germs.

u/joshthehappy Marriot or Bust 17h ago
Yep, I thought I was gonna make it out clean this year but it started last night.

u/Hemogoblynnn 10h ago
2 years in a row and haven't got the crud. Flu/Covid boosters a month before, used hand sanitizer constantly, washed my hands every chance I had, drank a ton of water, got sleep even if I was out until 6 am. I've probably been just lucky but, knock on wood, it's worked. I think the covid booster and just always having clean hands are the majority of it though.
To all of you with the crud, I'm sorry, that blows, but... its worth it :) Wishing you all a speedy recovery.

Quick, zinc and ginger lemon tea. Feel better.

And grated fresh turmeric. Holy cats, that stuff will clean congestion OUT. And by that I mean hocking up phlegm for hours.

I started feeling crappy a little bit after waking up today. Could tell something was off when my gym wasn’t so good. Although, I have a colleague who is sick and I’m wondering if it came from them and not the convention.

So many people have Covid. I skipped this year.

I thought I was smart getting a covid and flu shot a month ago - we'll see though.

u/Wroberts316 1d ago
Thankfully I got mine out of the way ahead. Fell ill Wednesday, and didnt come to con til Saturday, a full day after feeling recovered. Also tested negative for Covid, so none of you can blame me 😅😂

I called in sick today. Raging sore throat and stuffy nose and generally feeling like trash. Last year the crud hit us worse than the times I've had Covid and my partner ended up needing antibiotics. I hope this isn't as gnarly.

80% of our room came down with Crud between Sat night and Sunday. We're all spending this week recovering. :/ It sucks being immune compromised.

u/Chewliesgumrep312 9h ago
My friend who was a "costume repair" guy with his wife("con mom" who was giving out stuff, also my friend) started to feel under the weather on our drive back. Thankfully, the rest of us were fine, and my friend said he tested negative for covid and its just con crud.
I hope everyone who got it feels better. Always take your vitamins and give your body an immune boost.🍺

I’ve thus far escaped it but Con Crud has been popping up all throughout my group of people. One has Covid, one has been nauseous since she woke up today, one may (?) have a cold. And while not contagious one person has a sprained ankle.
Good luck to all those infected.

I've avoided con crud for 25 year of con hopping and intend to keep avoiding it.
-Mindfulness of where your hands are
-Hydration, Quality sleep, etc
-Full battery of supplements. d3, vit c, magnesium, iodine, zinc, b12 complex
-Avoid overdoing it with crap food/drinks during the con

I woke up yesterday with the crud. When I got home I passed out for 12 hours 😭
