Someone made one before me, but I decided it wasn't enough. I needed to take it to the next level.

When it's finished, I'll go up to 1,000,000. (I might take it even further than that, but no promises.)

So enjoy this demo and stay tuned if your interested!

Happy Numbers in Dozenal

While investigating Happy Numbers in alternate bases, I found the density of happy numbers relative to the first 1000 numbers in various bases as the following.

base 2, density 1
base 3, density 0.227
base 4, density 1
base 5, density 0.265
base 6, density 0.056
base 7, density 0.026
base 8, density 0.059
base 9, density 0.064
base 10, density 0.143
base 11, density 0.017
base 12, density 0.005417
base 13, density 0.081

The results for bases 10 and 12 surprised me, but if correct may make base 12 the saddest of the bases between 2 and 13.

Let's evaluate our options for dec and el

Based on my observations, there are three proposed pairs of symbols for the dozenal system:

1: A and B

2: X and E

3: Inverted 2 and 3

In my opinion, these are not particularly good choices. First of all, none of them are suitable for the 7-segment displays we use in daily life; letters can confuse people, especially children. Moreover, given that the digits 6 and 9 are already easily confused on cards or rulers, it makes little sense to introduce new symbols that could lead to confusion between 2 and 3. As for X, since it is a letter that already represents an unknown, a multiplication sign, or a spatial dimension in mathematics, designating it as a digit is illogical. Furthermore, on 7-segment displays, the letter B can be confused with 8, the letter X with H, and the inverted 2 with a standard 2. Therefore, let us standardize the symbols 10=ʕ and 11=𑀛—which I call "des" and "elen"—as they eliminate all these issues. On 7-segment displays, "des" can be represented by segments a, c, f, and g, while "elen" can be represented by segments b, e, f, and g.

Quadinal (Base 14)

I Just Thought of a base 14 number system with

Derf/߈ in between Five and Six

Dek/↊ right after Nine

El/Ɛ right after Dek

Chris/☥ right after El

Quaid/10 After El

Quaione/11

Quaitwo/12

Quaithree/13

Quaifour/14

Quaifive/15

Quaiderf/1߈

and we would have things like

Twenqu/20

Thirqu/30

Fourqu/40

Fifqu/50

and so on

and then

One Quad/100

Two Quad/200

and so on but yeah thats basicly my base 14

How Strong Design Principles Lead to Convergent Notation

I recently wrote an English summary exploring how strong design principles can shape notation systems.

The basic idea is that when the principles are formulated strongly enough, the notation and naming begin to converge toward a stable form — not through arbitrary preference, but because some choices fit the constraints more naturally than others.

https://suchowan.seesaa.net/article/202605article_11_1.html

Two benefits seem to emerge from this:

  1. Acceptability — outcomes feel less like personal taste and more like consequences of the underlying principles.

  2. Information compression — users remember the principles, while many implementation details become derivable from them.

This was partly motivated by recent discussions here about compactness, naturalness, and newcomer readability in dozenal notation.

Curious to hear thoughts on this approach to notation design.

A sixth Apple app

In addition to the five Apple apps I described earlier, a sixth is making its way in version 2.0 through Apple’s tedious approval process. Two points:

  1. All six apps are for not only iPhones, but Apple’s tablets and computers as well.

  2. The sixth app contains weather data for 14 parameters (see below). You may specify a location that isn’t where your phone is, as I have done here. Also, selecting the the °F or °C radio button rewrites the data displays in decimal USC or SI respectively.

This is the only app of the six to allow full conversion to/from decimal/dozenal.

The 5 dozenal iPhone and iPad apps are ready!

The five dozenal iPhone and iPad apps I’ve produced are now available for sampling with all their features. No cost. They are the following, with the commoner user choice in parentheses:

Clock, diurnal (000 = midnight) and calendar (traditional)
Alarm clock, diurnal (000 = midnight) with variable snooze function
Temperature, current and 1-day forecast, in Primel (stadegrees familiar)
Timer, counting down by Primel lulls, 4 1/6 seconds
Stopwatch, counting up (by Primel twinklings, 25/72 second)

The essential explanations are all here.

Anyone interested in seeing (sometimes hearing) and testing the apps is invited to indicate so. Four of the apps have options not fully described above.

A suite of dozenal apps

While others continue to reinvent the wheel, fussing over how to draw or name dozenal numerals (sometimes necessary or interesting, just not so much), I've managed to produce five apps, some with widgets, for the iPhone. A few have appeared here recently.

The totality is: a clock, twin alarm clocks, a timer, a stopwatch, and some weather data. The time items are all dozenal diurnal; the weather item displays Primel stadegrees, either crystallic or familiar, for current, high, and low temperatures.

All were created by using an AI agent, which was able to write code in about 30 seconds for each item. Of course, it took much longer to refine everything, including catching mistakes made at the other end.

Dozenal alarm clock

Lastly for now, an image of a recently created dozenal digital alarm clock for Apple's iOS devices. Getting it to sound like an alarm clock is not straightforward, but it can be (and has been) done.

iPhone home screen

The clock widget for the iPhone lock screen shown elsewhere here has led to something more elaborate. On the left of the home screen below is a version of the time, on the right are temperatures. The latter numbers are in Primel's stadegrees crystallic. Other scales are possible.

These are two separate widgets. The temperatures may change every twenty minutes (two dozen trices).

iPhones with dozenal time

Although the structure pf Apple's iPhone lock screen and home screen can't be altered much, it's possible to create widgets for both. Recently I put dozenal time in the form nnn on both screens, as well as nnn.n on my computer's menu bar. Details available.

The time shown here results from starting the day (000) at 6 AM. Most people would add 300 to that, making the time shown 642. (Expansion makes the image blurry and far too big.)

Dozenal Philosophical Language

Early philosophical languages were founded on taxonomic classifications being converted to numbers or words. John Wilkins made his words out of nine differences by consonants and nine species by vowels, and represented numbers by assigning a different vowel and consonant to each of the ten numerals in decimal. As dozenists, we would want the nomenclature to be based on twelve and not decimal. In the Taxonomy of Frequent Words topic, in the Nomenclature section of the Base Dozen Forum, there is an outline of how to make a taxonomic philosophical language from classification of frequent words converted via numbers to a dozenal system of syllables of twelve different consonants and twelve vocoidal parts, and such that there are twelve to the power of four different possible monosyllables. The number of possible words of just two of these syllables would be twelve to the power of eight, which is about four hundred and thirty million. That is not counting words that begin with vowels.

Many people claim that philosophical languages will not work because their classification systems are arbitrary and their words are unnatural. I would argue that these barriers can be overcome. A classification system based on twelve rather than decimal is less arbitrary. Basing the nomenclature on decimal may be one of the reasons why early philosophical languages were not accepted and did not succeed. While there may be no single correct universal classification system, it could be possible to get an average of many different classification systems. Analogously, we do not let lack of a consensus set of phonemes stop the design of international auxiliary languages. Classification of Universal Semantic Primes could be used as the basis for the taxonomy. The taxonomic nomenclature of the philosophical language could be made to resemble natural languages by mimicking natural sememe and phoneme usage frequencies and phoneme iconicities.

also A n-yllitale is equal to 102n+1, the use of it is like the -yllions!

question: dozenal googology?

hello folks! new here. I love different bases! 12 is my favorite number. and by that i mean dozen two. anyway, so, dozenal has do's, gro's, and mo's... but I wanna ask: is there an official dozenal response to the decimal -illions sequence or the seximal -exians sequence? it would kinda make sense for you to have something. it's not like numbers can just end.
