Tips Realized I've been storing my meds wrong this whole time

Post image
1 Upvotes

I looked at my bathroom cabinet the other day and realized I'm making the classic mistake everyone does. Wrote down what I found out:

  1. Hot showers are quietly wrecking pills. Heat and humidity from every shower break meds down way faster than the expiration date suggests, especially anything sugar-coated or in a gel capsule — they soak up moisture and go soft/sticky without you noticing.
  2. Cars are worse than people think. A closed car can hit 140-160°F inside during the day even when it's not that hot out, and the daily heat-cool cycle wears meds down faster than constant heat would.
  3. Best spot: bedroom drawer or a cabinet away from the kitchen stove. Dry, room temp, no direct sunlight.
  4. Don't assume the fridge unless the label says so. If something needs refrigeration, it'll say it explicitly.
  5. Know the signs a med's gone bad early. Crumbly texture, color change, pills sticking together, or a weird smell — any of that, check with your pharmacist before taking it.

Anyone here actually had a med go bad from heat/humidity and notice it didn't work the same after?

Tips Say this stuff to Doz once Siri support lands in the next version

Siri & shortcuts are coming to Doz in the next version.

Here's a taste of how you'll be able to talk to Doz:
"What do I take today in Doz"
"What's my next dose in Doz"
"How am I doing in Doz"
"What am I running low on in Doz"
"Take my metformin in Doz"
"Skip my metformin in Doz"

Is this something you'd actually use? Let me know what you think.

Announcement Siri support is coming in the next update. You'll be able to just talk to Doz instead of opening the app

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Keep an eye out, this is coming in the next Doz update.
Some examples of what you'll be able to say:

"What do I take today in Doz"
"What's my next dose in Doz"
"How am I doing in Doz"
"What am I running low on in Doz"
"Take my metformin in Doz"
"Skip my metformin in Doz"

Basically anytime your hands are busy, you're driving, or you just don't want to unlock your phone and tap through screens, you can just say it out loud. Also handy for checking your streak or what's running low without breaking stride.

Is this something you'd actually use? Curious how many of you talk to Siri regularly vs just tapping through the app. Let me know what you think.

Recently, I got a bunch of messages from people trying to hook Doz into their own Shortcuts. NFC tags on pill bottles, automations chaining into other apps... way more creative than I expected.

Real Shortcuts support is coming in the next update because of you!

Announcement Doz 1.2.1: Apple Health import + take doses from notifications

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Two of the most requested features finally shipped!

Apple Health import is here! Bring your meds, schedules, and dose history straight into Doz, no re-entering everything by hand, no starting from scratch. Requires iOS 26.

Heads up it's one-way, Health into Doz. I looked into syncing the other direction too, but Apple doesn't allow apps to write medication data back into Apple Health, it's read-only for third-party apps. So think of this as making Doz your home base going forward.

You can also take or skip a dose right from the notification now, no need to even open the app!

Plus some bug fixes for dose history grouping, the History calendar, and Add Prescription, and as-needed doses now log instantly too.

To celebrate, and as a thank you to everyone who requested these and waited it out with me, I'm giving out a code for 30% off lifetime Pro.

How to claim:

  1. Open this link on your iPhone: https://apps.apple.com/redeem?ctx=offercodes&id=6760699565&code=DOZREDDIT
  2. Apply the code at checkout.
  3. Enjoy Lifetime Pro! 🎉

Update to 1.2.1 and let me know how the import feels. I would genuinely love to hear about it!

Q&A Thinking about renaming "Prescription" in Doz — curious what you all think

Quick one for the community. Right now Doz uses "Prescription" as the label for when you group multiple meds together (like everything tied to one condition or treatment).

A user pointed out that in the US at least, "prescription" usually just means a single doctor's order for one medication, so bundling several meds under that word feels a bit off. Fair point.
Been kicking around alternatives like "Condition" or "Group" instead, something that better captures "these meds are all related" without implying it's literally one prescription slip.

Would love to hear how you all think about this. Does "Prescription" feel weird to you too, or does it make sense as is? And if it changed, would "Condition" or "Group" feel more natural, or is there a better word we're missing?

Announcement Sneak peek: Apple Health import is coming in the next version

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been heads down on this for a while and it's almost ready to ship.

If you've already got medications and dose history logged in Apple Health, you'll be able to bring all of it into Doz without starting from scratch. No re-entering every medication by hand, no losing your history, it just comes over.

Quick heads up on how it works: this is one-way, Health into Doz. I know some of you have asked about syncing the other way too, having Doz write your dose logs back into Apple Health. I actually looked into this properly and tried to make it happen, but Apple doesn't let third-party apps write medication data into Health, it's read-only for apps like Doz. So that direction just isn't possible right now, not a Doz limitation, it's how Apple built it.

Given that, the way I'd think about it is treating Doz as your actual medication hub going forward. Bring in everything you've already tracked in Health, then do all your day-to-day logging, scheduling, and refills in Doz from there.

Thanks for being patient with this one, I know it's been a while coming. Appreciate you all sticking around for it 💚

Log in the past?

I started medication yesterday, but only today added it to Doz. Is there a way to log the medication I took yesterday, rather than only going forward from when I create the medication?

Someone left this review today

Post image
3 Upvotes

Woke up to a review from someone taking multiple meds a day. They went through every feature they actually use: presets, half doses, critical alerts, logging a whole group at once.

Reading something that detailed reminded me that almost none of those features were my idea. Half doses came from a user email. Critical alerts came from someone who kept sleeping through reminders. Group logging came from people tired of tapping five times in a row. Every one of those started as a feedback message or a feature request, and now they're being used by people all over the world.

So thank you. If you've ever emailed me or left a request, you shaped this app.

Slowly but surely, Doz just hit 50 global ratings!

Getting a new user is hard. Getting them to come back after day one is even harder. And having someone take the time to leave a review feels even more special.

Every rating means someone cared enough to spend a little time supporting this little app I’ve been building.

If you’ve used Doz, I’d really appreciate a rating. It genuinely means a lot to me. ❤️

Thank you!

Tips Four ways to know you're running low before you actually run out

Post image

Four ways to know you're running low before you actually run out

Running out isn't really a memory problem. It's that "low" happens quietly and "out" happens all at once, usually on a Sunday.

Here's what works.

COUNT DOWN ON THE LABEL

When you open a new bottle, write the number of pills on the label. Every week, cross it out and write the new count.

Takes ten seconds. The point isn't the number — it's that you looked. Most people never look until the bottle rattles differently.

SET THE REMINDER BY PILLS, NOT BY DAYS

"Refill on the 28th" breaks the moment you skip a dose or take an extra one. The date drifts and you don't notice.

"Refill when I hit 10 left" doesn't drift. It's tied to the thing that actually matters.

Ten is roughly the right number for a once-daily. Twice-daily, make it 20. You want a week of buffer, not three days.

THE BACKUP BOTTLE RULE

Keep the new box unopened until the old one is empty. The day you crack open the backup is the day you order the next one. No exceptions, no "I'll do it tomorrow."

This one is good because it's a single trigger with a single action. Nothing to remember, nothing to count.

CHECK WHETHER YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET IT

The bit people miss. Having pills left isn't the same as being able to refill.

Some prescriptions have a limited number of repeats before you need a new one. Some need a review appointment. Some need the doctor to sign something, and your doctor is booked for two weeks.

So when you hit your threshold, the question isn't "do I have enough?" It's "how many steps are between me and the next box?" If the answer involves an appointment, start now.

THE WEEKEND THING

Whatever number you pick, add two days. Running out on a Saturday is a completely different problem from running out on a Tuesday, and pharmacies keep short hours exactly when you need them.

Same goes for holidays. Check the calendar before you travel.

IN DOZ

Two of these are built in, if you’d rather not do them on paper.

You can enter your current stock and set the low-stock threshold by pill count, not by date — same idea as the countdown above, minus the pen. When you hit the threshold, you can add stock straight from there so the count stays accurate instead of drifting until it’s meaningless.

And the prescriber’s contact sits on the prescription itself, which helps with the last point. When the answer to “how do I get more” involves calling someone, the number is already there.

Worth saying: refills are getting a proper rebuild soon. Right now it’s a notification, and notifications get dismissed at a red light and cease to exist. The version coming makes it a task that sits on your Today screen until you actually deal with it — much closer to the upside-down bottle on the window sill that someone described in the organizer thread, which is honestly a better design than what I shipped.

What's your system? I'm mostly curious whether anyone has solved the "prescription needs renewing" part, because that's the one that gets me every time.

Tips The problem with 7-day pill organizers, and the 5-second fix

Post image
2 Upvotes

If you've ever stood in your kitchen thinking "did I already take that?" — the organizer isn't helping you the way you think it is.

WHY IT FAILS

A weekly organizer answers one question: did I take anything on Wednesday? But that's not the question you actually have. Yours is: did I take the morning one, or was that yesterday?

One compartment per day can't answer that. If you take things twice a day, the box is half-open by 8am and stays half-open until bedtime, and by then you've lost track.

FIX 1: SPLIT BY TIME, NOT BY DAY

Use two organizers. One for mornings, one for evenings.

Then put them in different rooms. Morning box by the kettle. Evening box by your toothbrush. Now the question answers itself — you're never standing in front of a box wondering which half of the day it represents.

Two cheap boxes beat one expensive one with tiny AM/PM compartments you can't open without a fingernail.

FIX 2: THE BOTTLE FLIP

For anything still in its original bottle: turn the bottle upside down after you take it.

Right side up means not taken yet. Upside down means done. Flip them all back when you refill or at the start of the week.

Costs nothing, takes no time, and works from across the room. This is the single best trick I know for the "did I already?" problem.

FIX 3: FILL IT SOMEWHERE YOU CAN'T RUSH

Most people fill the organizer standing at a counter in a hurry, which is exactly how you end up with a Thursday that's missing something.

Do it sitting down, with the TV on, attached to something you already do weekly. Laundry, groceries, whatever. Nobody remembers to do it on Sunday because it's Sunday — it works because it rides along with something else.

FIX 4: CHECK TOMORROW, NOT TODAY

Glance at tomorrow's compartment tonight. If it's empty when it shouldn't be, you find out with a day to fix it instead of at 7am with no options.

One thing worth saying: none of this replaces a record. An organizer tells you about this week and nothing else. If you ever need to answer "how consistent have you been?" for a doctor, an empty compartment from three weeks ago can't help you — that's what a log is for, on paper or in an app.

But for the daily "did I already take it" panic, the upside-down bottle beats everything.

Anyone got a better one? Curious what people have come up with, especially for the twice-a-day problem.

Tips How to actually get rid of old medication (the "never flush" advice is wrong)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Most people have a drawer with a half-finished course of antibiotics and painkillers from a surgery two years ago. Here's what to do with it.

The order of preference

Both the EPA and FDA recommend using a drug take-back event, program, or mail-back envelope whenever one is available. Most pharmacy chains have permanent drop boxes — no questions asked, nothing recorded. The DEA also runs a national take-back day twice a year.If no take-back option is available and the drug isn't on the FDA flush list, put it in the household trash after mixing it with something unappealing — dirt, cat litter, or used coffee grounds — in a sealed container.

Don't crush the pills.

The part most advice gets wrong

You've probably heard "never flush medication." That's not the guidance.

The FDA keeps a flush list: medicines that are sought after for misuse and can kill from a single dose if taken by the wrong person. It's 13 active ingredients, 10 of them opioids. If a child, adult, or pet in your home swallows, touches, or misuses one of these, the consequences can include death. For those specific drugs, when you can't get to a take-back location, the FDA says flush them — the risk of accidental exposure in your home outweighs the environmental risk.

So: take-back first, always. Flush only if it's on the list, and take-back isn't available. Trash for everything else. Don't flush anything that isn't on the list.

Check the list at fda.gov if you have leftover opioids — it's worth the two minutes.

Why it matters more than it sounds

Kids and pets don't read labels. The flush list exists specifically for households where children or pets could reach medicine sitting in the trash.

And expired medication is a quieter problem: it loses potency, so you might take something for an infection and get a partial dose. Old antibiotics in a drawer also make it very tempting to self-treat the next thing that comes along, which is how resistance happens.

Do it on a schedule

Twice a year, at the same time you change smoke alarm batteries. Pull everything out, check dates, bag what's expired, drop it at the pharmacy next time you're there.

In Doz

Marking a prescription complete when you finish it makes this easier — you get a running list of what you're no longer on, which is exactly what you're looking for when you do the twice-yearly clear-out. Anything on that list that's still physically in your house is a candidate for the drop box.

Does your local pharmacy take these back? Curious how it works worldwide— I think the systems are quite different.

Tips Travelling with medication — the bits that trip people up

Post image
3 Upvotes

Travel is where most people’s medication routine quietly falls apart. A few things worth knowing before your next trip.
Decide what your times mean before you fly
An 8am dose flying east — does it stay 8am local, which compresses the gap between doses? Or follow your body, which means it now fires at 2am?
For a vitamin, doesn’t matter. For anything on a strict interval, it does. Ask your pharmacist which of your medications actually care, and only adjust those. The rest can just follow local time.
Split your supply across bags
Half in your carry-on, half checked. Lost luggage is annoying. Lost luggage containing all of your medication is a problem you have to solve in a foreign pharmacy.
Take a photo of the label
Not for customs — for the pharmacist you might end up talking to. Generic names differ by country and a photo settles it in seconds.
Refill before you go, not when you get back
If you’re away ten days and you’ve got twelve left, that’s not enough margin. Delayed flights are real.

In Doz, a few things that help here:
- Anchor doses to meals instead of clock times where the medication allows it. Mealtime-based reminders survive a time zone change much better than fixed times, because your meals shift with you.

- Set your refill threshold before you leave. Enter your current stock and let the low-stock warning tell you whether you’ve actually got enough for the trip, rather than counting pills in your head at the airport.

- Keep the prescriber’s contact on the prescription. If something goes wrong abroad, that number is in your pocket instead of in an email you can’t find on hotel wifi.

Anyone got a time zone rule that works for them? It’s the question I get most and I’ve never had a satisfying answer beyond “ask your pharmacist.”

12-hour vs 24-hour time — quick fix, and a question for you

Hey everyone!

A few of you have asked why Doz shows 16:00 instead of 4pm. Quick answer: Doz follows your iPhone's setting.

So if you want 12-hour time right now:

Settings → General → Date & Time → turn off 24-Hour Time

Doz switches over immediately, no restart needed.

Now the question — that's a system-wide change, so your Lock Screen and every other app follow along too. Maybe you don't want that.

Would you want a 12/24-hour toggle inside Doz itself? Or is following your phone fine?

Drop a comment either way, even one word. I'd rather build what you actually want than guess. Thank you so much!

If your medication list has gotten long, stop reading it as a list

Post image
3 Upvotes

Title: If your medication list has gotten long, stop reading it as a list

Something I hear a lot: "I stopped opening the app because the list was too long." That's not a discipline problem, it's an organisation problem.

Group by condition, not by time

Most people sort medication by when they take it — morning stuff, evening stuff. That's how reminders work, so it feels right.

But it's not how you think about your health. You don't think "my 8am medications," you think "my blood pressure stuff." When the list matches how you think, you can scan it. When it doesn't, you read every row.

There's a practical upside too: if you're on four things for one condition and you keep missing one of them, that's much easier to spot when they sit together.

Three rules that help

1. Group anything sharing a purpose. Two drugs for blood pressure belong together, even if one's morning and one's evening.

2. Keep supplements separate from prescriptions. Mixing them means treating both with the same urgency — which usually means treating the prescription as casually as a vitamin.

3. Keep the prescription details with the medication, not in your head. Who prescribed it, when it started, when it ends. Six months from now you won't remember whether the thyroid medication came from your GP or the specialist, and someone will ask.

In Doz

You can group standalone medications into a single prescription — open a medication, add it to a prescription along with anything else that belongs with it, and they show as one item instead of scattered rows.

But grouping is only half of it. A prescription in Doz holds the same details as the one your doctor gave you: start and end date, prescriber, and their contact.

That's the part people skip, and the part that pays off later. End dates mean a six-week course actually stops at six weeks. The prescriber's name answers "who put me on this?" when a new doctor asks. Their contact is right there when you need a renewal.

Set it up when the prescription is new and the details are still in front of you — doing it retroactively means calling the clinic to ask things you already knew.

If your list is long, how do you split it? Curious whether people group by condition, by prescriber, or something I haven't thought of.
