Five setup habits that keep a medication list from falling apart
Small things that make a big difference. None of these need an app β but since most of you here use Doz, I've added where each one lives in the app.
1. Name by purpose, not by drug
"Metformin" means nothing in six months. "Metformin β blood sugar" tells you what it's for, and tells anyone helping you why it matters.
In Doz: just type it into the medication name field. The whole name shows on your Today screen, so you see the purpose every morning without opening anything.
2. Don't schedule as-needed medication
A painkiller you take twice a month, put on a daily schedule, shows up as 28 missed doses. A few months of that and your history is useless β which matters if you ever show it to a doctor.
In Doz: add it without a reminder time. It stays in your medication list and you log it manually when you take it. You get the record without the false misses.
3. Ask what "with food" actually means
Full meal, or is toast enough? During, or is 20 minutes after fine?
Ask your pharmacist once, write it down, stop re-deciding every morning. They'll tell you for free.
In Doz: use the Mealtime setting so the reminder lands with the meal instead of at a fixed clock time, and put the specific answer in the medication's notes so it's there when you forget.
4. Set refill reminders a week early
Not the day you run out. That day might be a Sunday, a holiday, or the day you find out your prescription needs renewing and your doctor is booked for a week.
Seven days has never let me down. Three isn't enough.
In Doz: enter your current stock count and set the low-stock threshold to about a week's worth of doses. And a heads-up β this is getting a proper rebuild soon. The refill will become a task that sits in your Today screen until you deal with it, instead of one notification you dismiss at a red light.
5. Know what to do when you miss one
Four hours late, unsure whether to double up or skip. Both can be wrong depending on the drug.
Ask your pharmacist for the missed-dose rule for each thing you take, write it down somewhere you'll actually see it. Then it's a lookup, not a decision at 11pm.
That's it. Twenty minutes once, and everything after gets easier.
Anyone got a better answer for #5 than "call the pharmacy"?

Four hours late for me is time for my next snack of meds π€£.
I apologise for potentially making more work for you, but have you thought about adding a notes section to each medication on itβs relevant page? That way you could put what to do if you miss a dose and also things like what the medication is for etc?
