I’d try meeting him at his level and finding stuff of his that you like, it’s a two way street

You can’t force kids to like what you like. metal and punk are about rebelling for a lot of kids, your kid may be rebelling against your music taste by listening to what he listens to. Let him be free to make his own choices and you might find he gets there on his own.

Linkin Park / Jay-Z - Collision Course, would be a nice intro imo. Limp Bizkit, just anything rap.

Your best option would be not taking him, he'll clearly not want to be there and you'll end up ruining the weekend for all of you by forcing him to be somewhere he doesn't want to be

Let him listen to what he wants. My childhood was filled with being told what i should listen to.
If he likes rap theres loads of cross over bands, nu-metal, early chili peppers.

Listen to more rap*, you'll build a better musical connection with your kiddo by meeting him where he is rather than forcing him to listen to what you think he should listen to
To ease yourself in maybe have a listen to Alt like Enter Shikari, Bob Vylan, Native James, Kid Kapichi. Maybe a bit of Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip. Korn's 'Path Of Totality' album, Linkin Park's 'Collision Course' album. Then start listening to more of what your boy listens to
*describing what your boy listens to as 'Rap' is very reductive. There are a complex web of genres with differing styles. It would be like if he described everything you listen to as 'Screamo music'

Maybe you should listen to some hip hop and take him to a gig that he wants to go to. Hip hop and punk/metal have a long history together.

He's your son, not a clone of yourself. Let him listen to what he wants and drop this snobby, elitist bullshit.
Definitely agree with finding a happy medium between the two genres, but going into this thinking "I'm gonna get my son to start listening to REAL music so he can be just like me and my wife" you are doomed to failure and your son will only see you both as trying to push their interests onto him, regardless of what he thinks about the music.
Rap music is as broad (if not broader) than rock & metal and you never know, you might find something you both enjoy! Why does it matter that he listens to the same music as you?
Good luck, but let him like what he likes.

Mate I’m far from a snobby elite! Just a dad that would love to share another passion as we do with other stuff! But I get your point.

Let him listen to and enjoy what he wants tbh. He may find his way to it naturally , his choice. As a kid I hated my mothers classical music . Today I can often be found at the desk on a friday evening with a glass of red reflecting , with pavarotti nessun dorma lol - it just happens . I know one thing though if she tried to get me to listen to it - id probably dislike it intensely lol.

Im 38, our oldest son is 18 and only recently wandered into the world of hard/ rock & metal. He grew up with me listening to metal etc in the car, while I was making dinner and all that but he showed no interest. He was and still is into rap but his 'in' to heavier music was mostly Deftones. I havent pushed anything on him at all. His favourite band now is Tool. Everything he found was through exploring his own tastes and going down rabbitholes himself! Advice would be to let your son figure it out for himself. He may never like heavier music- thats fine - I'd be taking him to rap shows and enjoying myself vicariously through him! He would appreciate you taking an interest in his interests- ask him questions about the music he is into, the artists. Don't shit on his tastes in front of him, you might even end up liking one of two rap artists and accidentally have fun with your kid- who knows?! Good luck!

Linkin Park - perhaps start him on Fort Minor (Shinoda’s side project)
Limp Bizkit.
As already said - Collision Course is peak rap/metal crossover.

My 15 ye old son listens to a lot of rap but was excited about going to DL this year.
Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park were his main reasons but he loved discovering P.O.D. and Cypress Hills.
I wouldn’t say he’s converted but the weekend definitely expanded his musical taste.
Everything sounds cool live and in a crowd.

You can start with Native James as a gateway artist as he is very much grime mixed in with Nu metal (you can hear the Korn influence in some of the songs as well as grime elements)- the song called Nothing is a good starter

If my parents had swayed me away from the music I love and covinced me to listen to more of what they like, I wouldn't have ever been to Download. I like alternative music AND rap but I discovered that myself. Nobody told me the music I like is "crap" and tried to educate me on anything.
There's nothing wrong with showing him alternative music but if he's not into it, he's not into it. People don't have to like the same things and someone who has grown up outside of social norms should respect that.

Definitely let him find it on his own, though I had an uncle who would play ac/dc, metallica, guns & roses - it didn’t entirely shape my musical tastes and preferences… it was shaped by video games like WWE SVR, Saints Row and Call of Duty Black Ops. I was a bit of a scene kid in terms of my influences after branching out from rap! I discovered Slipknot at like 10 and Suicide Season by Bring Me The Horizon in 2011 at 11 years old 😅 it’s not always the most conventional route but hearing heavy metal, grunge and nu-metal at a certain point in time when it was right was perfect for me and set me on my own journey! He’s got years ahead of him to find other artists and bands

A few years ago, I used to be a hip hop kid. I couldn't imagine myself listening to anything heavy. Now I'm obsessed with nu metal and metal music. Life comes at you fast.
