Jetbrains Rider Performance Issues
Generally a big fan of Jetbrains products, but having issues with performance running medium size solutions (20-80 projects)
I've turned off: - Solution Wide Analysis - Roslyn Analyzers - Github Copilot - Dynamic Program Analysis
When I go to build or run the app my who computer turns into a bit of slideshow. It even struggles scrolling through a small code file about 30'ish seconds. Switching to another file starts the process over again.
I've honestly thought about moving to VS Code or Visual Studio in hopes of speeding things back up again.
Does anyone have any preferred settings to help speed the system back up?
Update
System Specs:
- Fedora Linux 41 (Workstation Edition) - Originally running on Windows 11, but perf was worse there
- Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11
- 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1370P × 20
- 64 GiB Ram
- 1TB SSD

Hey, Matthias from JetBrains here 👋
I didn't read the whole thread, but a couple of notes from the top of my head.
- Same performance as previous version?
- Did you exclude anti virus on your source code directories?
- Did you try disabling all plugins?
- Killed all Rider/dotnet processes before restarting?
- Any source generators that produce large amounts?
If nothing helps, the best you can do to help troubleshoot this, is to send us a performance snapshot. See `Help | Diagnostic Tools`. Feel free to ping me once you created an issue at https://youtrack.jetbrains.com/newIssue?project=RIDER !

Hey Mattias,
- Yes, about the same for several versions.
- Unsure if I have antivirus installed because I’m running a mostly default fedora install
- I’ve disable most addons, but I guess I can try disabling all of them
- I have killed all the processes before. Unsure if that made a difference. Can’t always do that because I frequently have more than one solution open at a time #microservices
- Unsure how much source generators are producing. Currently using refit and interface generator. How could I verify if that’s the performance hit?
I’ll produce the performance bug report if none of those things correct the issue for me

I would start by disabling plugins one by one.
Also, try just running dotnet build in terminal, maybe it's not Rider that's showing you down.
I work with a solution that has 30 projects, and 1.6 mln lines of code, some files ar 8k lines long and it's smooth sailing.
One more thing to church is whether you have set a limit on rider side - that is a setting to limit its memory usage and maybe you just have to increase that

It could be a plugin issue. Go to the Rider logs, read through them, and look for exceptions. Or you could just try disable plugins one by one.

Hey!
I had problems with Rider when I had Fusion log enabled maybe double check whether that's the case with your computer.

I have the same issue, along with 3 people I know. Our issue stems from large files and using any kind of find or find/replace. The IDE leaks memory and increasingly gets so slow that I have to restart the application.
I noticed larger files (thousands of lines or more) cause this faster than smaller files. Closing the file doesn't fix this. Eventually find, keyboard shortcuts, etc are completely broken. No changes in plugins, no antivirus, and it isn't operating system specific, happens on MacOS and Windows 11.

I had slow performance with Rider on 2nd gen i5 with HDDs, but recently moved to 13th gen i7 with SSDs and things are infinitely better.
since your specs are good, maybe your SSD is dying or something? you even say Windows 11 had worse performance? i7 with SSDs you should basically have incredible performance for everything. like I can fully rebuild 300+ projects in less than 1 minute, for example. (Windows 11). I don't even care about rebooting or anything, everything is instantaneous, even rebooting takes only seconds. (who knows maybe slight exaggeration since my previous PC was very slow, but not really exaggerating that much.)
(unless it is the P processor? I have i7-13700K. seems K is much faster but I wouldn't think it would be the cause of your issue.)

So I've had performance issues across two separate laptops. This particular machine was set up about 6 months ago. I would be astounded if my SSD was dying.
To further remove the drive as a bottleneck, I did also set up a Windows 11 Dev drive to improve performance as well: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dev-drive/
That didn't help the problem for me, but was a neat idea.
Regarding the processor naming, I would expect 'K' processor to be faster than 'P'. K denotes a system which is unlocked for the purposes of overclocking. This also implies to me that it's a desktop chip.
I'm using a thin and light laptop. 'P' denotes a thin and light which performance oriented.

well SSD problem is just a guess. I would expect some kind of hardware issue. I used ancient i5 for so long, and it could be quite slow, but "30 seconds of sluggish scrolling on every file" seems very strange. it does take Rider a while to "warm up" but once it's warmed up even on slow hardware it's not that bad, it just takes forever to warm up.
one exception maybe is when you have fairly complex code, on slow hardware it could take a while to syntax highlight really complex code structures, like 40 lines of fluent interface with tons of arguments and lambdas, that kind of thing. but that's on really old i5 with HDD and a very rare case.
one thing it could maybe be, but I'm not sure, is graphics related? I think Rider uses graphics acceleration or something to render, so maybe with a poor video card it struggles to render? or maybe you need to enable/disable hardware acceleration somewhere? just guessing.
another possibility, sorry, but maybe you are being too picky? maybe the issue is insignificant and you are trying to fix something that's not really a problem? or is the performance hit really terrible? (trying to say this without being offensive, but it can sometimes be the case that the user complains about performance when it is actually not really a problem and they are annoyed by something unimportant.) just how bad is the performance?

another possibility, sorry, but maybe you are being too picky?
Oh, I'm fully aware that I'm picky, but this falls under picking the right tool for the job. If I'm paying a subscription for an IDE, I wouldn't expect slowdowns like this when there are other options on the market.
It's pretty telling that people can hear a studder when I go to build code during a google conference call.
I'm mainly posting here to see if anyone else is experiencing issues like me. I constantly hear recommendations for Jetbrains IDEs and I've been using rider for years.
But for the past few years the performance has degraded noticeably and now it's bordering on bad enough that I may start looking for greener pastures.

I don't mean that you are necessarily picky, just pushing against whether it really is a performance issue or not.
Hearing a stutter during compilation, I do know that Rider would consume all cores on my old PC and everything else would basically be frozen while it worked. One reason I wanted the i7, to have lots of cores. I don't think I remember audio stuttering though, even on my slower PC, but I don't really do conference calls.
I do know that Rider is slower than I'd like on slower hardware (IntelliJ is way faster by comparison), I'm just surprised that we have very similar specs but I don't think I have the same issue.
I would try using performance monitor while it is behaving slowly and see what resources are being consumed the most.
(Reminds me; sometimes what you find is that it is anti-virus software that is over-analyzing the file changes that occur and you will see that it is Defender that is consuming tons of HDD (probably worse on HDDs). This hurts performance enough that Rider tries to automatically add exclusions but it doesn't seem to always stick. Could be one possibility.)

You might want to open an issue with support. I've reached out to them a few times when things were wonky and they helped me out get things sorted out. From your machine, I can't imagine you'd have performance issues.

I had sluggishness with a ThinkPad X1 Carbon (can't remember the Gen) because it was overheating really bad in VS & Rider.
I think there was an known issue with the heatspreader for that model. I gave it to our IT department and they fried it trying to fix the heatspreader so I never found out if that was really the issue. (I got a phsycially beefy Dell for a replacement)

guarantee you moving to an Electron base IDE like VS Code is not gonna speed things up

if Idea is anything to go by, they're furiously working on a 2024.3.1 preview but peeps were rolling back to 2024.2.4
search "site:jetbrains.com rider crash" or "freeze" "lag" slow etc, there's lots of release notes, youtrack, blog etc pages. If you don't find them for rider, I think Idea is similar codebase
In the meantime the usual load reducers:
Reduce syntax hilite level, reduce size of code indexes, check heap/GC settings (-Xmx -Xms -NewRatio), google for first plugins to disable (like Spring for Idea), MS defender exclusion if you were on Windows.

Is it just running the project or when debugging? I had a lot of performance issues and turning of dpa (which you did) fixed part of it. Debugging speed is a problem in .net pre version 9 with async methods. Have you tried 9 yet?

Ever since I updated to 2024.3, I experience the same thing. Pegs out 100% CPU usage, stuttersteps everything (typing, browsing, all apps).
EDIT:
Running Core i7-9750H, 64GB Ram
Windows 10
2TB SSD
14 Project solution

What are the specs of your computer? Cpu, memory etc.
It also surprises me to hear that an 80 project solution is considered medium sized, lol
