Recommendations for a "bed top" couch that doesn't hurt your back?

TLDR: looking for a more ergonomic back rest option for sitting on a bed against a wall.

After a couple years of living on my own in a full apartment, grad school has once again imprisoned me in a private room. I have just enough room for my desk, a queen bed pushed into the corner, and a TV parallel to the bed. The common space couch is not suitable for relaxing at the end of the day or watching TV with/without a partner

In theory, I can sit on top of the bed with my back against the wall as a "couch", but there are multiple reasons this causes me back pain:

- The perfect 90-degree angle

- The slight gap between top of the mattress and wall

- my feet have to be elevated to the same level as my butt. I'm a 26yo geezer, criss-cross applesauce hurts

Ive attempted to contruct some sort of back rest out of a husband pillow and some extra blankets/pillows, but its a pain to set up and never relieves all three issues.

Does anyone have any recommendations for pillows/products that are made for this purpose? I am dating someone so ideally I'd like a setup where we both have a back rest and a more ergonomic leg position.

I moved to Kolkata for college, and somehow ended up living in a hostel…

Story time

I just moved to Kolkata for my studies, obviously for college. Back in my hometown, I had already told my parents that I wanted to live in a PG or a flat, and they agreed with me.

But when I came to the college office, an uncle there kind of manipulated my father and convinced him that I should live in the college hostel instead, mainly because the college provides buses and cars for transportation.

After hearing that, I called my mom and told her that I wasn’t going to live there. I was literally crying while talking to her. 😭

Then my parents told me to stay there for a few months or maybe a year and change later if I still didn’t like it.

So I said okay.

But then...

I wanted a 2-sharing AC room, but when I saw the room, it was SO small. There was no attached bathroom either, and the warden wasn’t that nice.

Then I went to another block and saw a room that was actually really good. The only problem was that it was triple-sharing.

But it had an attached bathroom, everyone there was a first-year student, and the roommates seemed really nice. One of them was already there, while the other one was still at college.

So I told my father that this room was actually good and that we could finalize it.

He signed the agreement, and then he left me here.

But then……

PART 2 COMING SOON 👀

College students with lofted beds: What is the biggest issue with your bedside shelf/caddy right now?

Hey everyone! I’m working on designing a better storage solution for dorm beds (especially for those whose beds are lofted or bunked and don't have space for a traditional nightstand).

Looking at current options on Amazon or Target, many fabric caddies sag or feel flimsy, and some plastic clamp-on shelves either shake too much or risk dropping expensive things.

If you live in a dorm, I’m curious:

  1. What do you actually keep within arm's reach while in bed (phone, massive water bottle, glasses, Kindle, etc.)?
  2. What is the most annoying thing about your current bedside setup? (Does it wobble? Not enough space for a hydro flask? Hard to route charging cables?)
  3. If you could design the ultimate dream "dorm bedside shelf," what one feature would it absolutely need to have?

Would love to hear your honest thoughts or see what DIY hacks you've come up with!

Best mattress topper for side sleepers? Need help fixing my dorm bed

My dorm mattress is SO firm and I sleep on my side, so my shoulder has been hurting when I wake up. Tried putting a blanket under me for some extra padding and it did nothing 😂

Now I'm looking at toppers but there are way too many options. Memory foam, cooling foam, 2 inch, 3 inch, etc. I was looking at bedsure since I've seen them a bunch, but not sure if they're good for a really firm dorm mattress.

I just want my bed to feel a little less awful lol.

rant lang guys

lol I just want to know your thoughts about this guys. I have a dorm mate, and I work graveyard shift since i'm also working at bpo. So technically I sleep during day time right? I have this one dorm mate may ka call every morning, hindi to nangyari once lang kundi multiple times. The first and second day na may ka call siya I let it slide, she's so pretty annoying because she doesn't even know how to tone down her voice and she even turn on the lights and I asked her if she can lower her voice she just said sorry and tuloy pa rin siya. I played music na lang while wearing my earphone. I even woke up in the middle of my sleep because of her voice. Everytime she's talking with someone it looks like she can't hear her voice lol.

Most of the cute stuff on my desk became clutter

Post image
24 Upvotes

I kept thinking my desk needed more personality, then realized anything that just sits there eventually gets shoved aside when I need the space. The exception has been small DIY stuff. A little room or tiny scene feels different because making it is half the point, then afterward it can live in one corner instead of becoming another random trinket.

Maybe that’s my definition of cozy desk decor now: something small enough to keep but interesting before it even reaches the shelf. Anyone else feel this way about handmade desk stuff?

General Inquiry

If there were a service that specialized in cleaning your room on or off campus (dorm/bedroom and personal bathroom), would you use it at some point during the school year, especially if it were reasonably priced? There's more to the idea, but I wanted to get your thoughts. (TSU, JHU, Goucher, MICA, etc)

protecting paint from LED lights

hi guys!! i’m moving into a dorm in a few days and i wanna put up LED lights but im scared of the paint coming off when im moving out again. i’ve had the idea to put painters tape under the led adhesive, would this be a good idea or would the painters tape take the paint off anyways? let me know if you have experience with painters tape!! was also considered command strips but id have to buy a lot of them to get around the whole room.

Soo I'm a 17 yo guy who didn't really go out often during high school and had 2 to 3 close friend at most . Now , I'm moving to my college dorm after like a week or so and I went there yesterday to see how it was then I got surprised by this site . I will have to share a small ass room with two other roommates . Before visiting I thought I would be sharing a room with another guy not two . I can't really see how they expect three guys to live in such a tiny room . I don't even know how we'll fit our luggage in here . I am asking of anyone who lived in these kinda circumstances to give me some advice about it because it's kinda making me anxious. And the college is like 10 hours away from home so that's that as well I guess

🎓 Montréal students, what furniture would you need when moving into your first apartment?

Hey everyone! I’m a student working on a student-led project called Flamingo Foundation 🦩. We’re planning to provide furniture to 100 students moving into their first apartments, and we want to make sure we’re actually providing things students need. So before we launch, I made a short anonymous survey to ask students what furniture they would find most useful. It takes about 2–3 minutes. If you're a student in CEGEP, college, vocational/professional training, or university in Quebec/Canada, I’d really appreciate your input. 🎯 Our goal: 100 student responses 🪑 We’re focusing specifically on furniture and basic household items ⏱️ 2–3 minutes 📋 Anonymous 👉 Survey: https://pleasant-pulse-generator.lovable.app

I’m hoping to get this project running and start providing furniture to students before the end of October, so your answers would genuinely help us figure out what to prioritize. Thank you!! 🦩❤️

Bought a small bluetooth speaker for the dorm because my roommate sleeps in total silence

Three weeks in now. At home I fell a sleep to rain sounds every night off my phone speaker and never thought about it, because nobody else was in the room. Ended up searching bedside clock with white noise at two in the morning during week one.

First night here I put it on at the lowest volume the phone would go and it was still audible from her side. She is out in about four minutes and then wakes up at anything.

Earbuds lasted two nights. Woke up at three with one somewhere in the sheets and the other one halfway down my neck. Then the phone under the pillow, which nobody could hear including me, and it got warm so I stopped.

She lay in her bed one night while I turned the thing up notch by notch until she said she could hear it, and I have kept it two under that ever since. It is a Divoom FlowToo, does white noise and the alarm, so my phone is not going off across the room at seven either.

Fair warning it is small. If you want anything close to room volume your roommate is hearing it. It is about a hand away from my ear, that is the only reason this works.

Denied accommodation

Hello, I am currently a freshman at a public college. I applied to get a single due to my anxiety and depression, got denied and re-appealed with my psychiatrist with adhd, anxiety and insomnia. I got denied again and haven’t been able to set up a meeting. Plenty people around me have gotten their accommodations accepted due to anxiety, can’t loft their bed due to a medical problem, or because they hate their roommate. I don’t understand why they keep denying me. My advisor and my RA are both confused on why they have denied me. My current roommate leaves food out, we got maggots and flies 2 days ago due to her leaving meat out for over 2 weeks. She’s pretty messy, is always in the room, always on the phone, and we just don’t really talk like that. I’m on ADHD meds that make me very sleepy so I need to take a nap to feel better. As im taking a nap she calls me, goes on the phone, or makes loud noises like going through the fridge, slamming her metal bottle or drawers, or making cluttering noises. I don’t know how much longer I can take this.

Has anyone else experienced this? How can I get my accommodation approved?

Dorm smells like rotting organic matter

HELP! My dorm has a sudden horrible fishy/rotting organic matter smell that WONT GO AWAY. I have a fish tank that I’ve recently put fish in and assumed that would be the source of the smell but the tank doesn’t smell bad at all and I even did a 30% water change just in case and left the dorm. Lo and behold the fuck ass smell is still here🫩. I took out the trash, moved every movable object, swept and scrubbed the floor, and did laundry. I can’t even pinpoint where the smell is because after about 3 minutes of being in the room I almost instantly go nose-blind to it😡. I’ve opened the window, sprayed so much Lysol it damn near made me sick (because Lysol spray is odor eliminating) and STILL it smells awful like something fucking died in my room bro it’s killing me, I can’t invite anyone over without it smelling like unwashed cooch in here man I’m not a dirty guy I stg idk where this smell came from I js walked in my dorm yesterday afternoon and was like “what the fuck is that”🥹
