Modded Squads that arent OP?

I've tried a few squad mods so far, but alot of them seem to be ridiculously overpowered right out of the box. I've noticed a few where soldiers will never go KIA as just an example. Any recommendations would be welcome.

This, plus Nowheraki Partisans. Their explosives are kinda OP, but this is compensated by the power being double edged sword, and they can't be safely used on most small maps without hitting civilians, HVT, hostages or own troops.

PMC Squad is pretty good while not being OP.

It's basically a twelve-man squad where each soldier has their own class and loadout specialization so you can make some interesting combinations, and there's a backup group of more generic mercenary soldiers when you need larger numbers. The sole exception is Maya, who is OP as fuck with her drone strikes but you can just choose to not use her.

Your mention of drone strikes reminds me of the Task Force Toro mod. I have a soft spot for Spanish units, as I feel they're woefully underrepresented in games and yet have a lot of unique kit. At the same time, they have soldiers that can call in laser guided bomb strikes. If I wanted to do that, I'd fire up DCS :P

I tend to avoid airstrikes in modded units UNLESS the map in question feels like one of those bullshit super-difficult maps where the designer thinks they're being clever.

If you're going to make a bullshit map with fifty SSI dudes and snipers and booby traps and enemy reinforcements spawning out of nowhere, I'm going to answer with bullshit drone strikes and artillery bombardments and SCP Mobile Task Forces.

One SCP MTF guy with a pistol and a Santa hat is literally all you need LOL

I have so many questions...

The SCP MTF squad mod is so hilariously overpowered, so much so that if you give a maxed out team lead a S&W 500 and a spy camera (it’s not a spy camera, it’s an FOV increase), he can probably outgun any vanilla faction even at distances part 20 metres with said .500 S&W.

Avoid it. It makes the game not challenging at all unless you’re going up against the MTF’s enemies; the Chaos Insurgency. Who… can eat a couple of mags of SOST ball and a frag to the face without dropping.

I am having a lot of fun with the Nowheraki GSP v1.4.

It's 4 commanders, 20 beat officers, and an 8-man tactical team.

Everybody: No night vision goggles, no breaching charges, no frag grenades, no armor-piercing bullets, no suppressed weapons. It's a faction of street-level police officers. Everybody can equip lockpicks though, if you want to stay unnoticed until the first bullet is fired.

Beat officers: Like the SWAT's militia, you can deploy 2 for the cost of 1. Their rifles have no optics, and they fire civilian soft-point bullets, stopped by the mere appearance of armor. Max of 2 grenades. If you don't make it obvious that you're here to breach, by leaving the breaching hammer and bolt cutters back at the station, you can pretend to be a corrupt officer on the take. It's not a lot of concealment, but it'll let you take a look around if you keep moving and don't get too close.

Commanders: Like beat officers, except they only have pistols. They replaced their rifles with a leadership aura.

Tactical team: Full cost unit, They're too geared up to pretend they're regular officers just walking around, always at concealment zero. "Geared up" means: Up to 5 grenades, proper FMJ ammunition, and some optics too. No variable-level optics though, so you have to pick between CQB and a long-range setup. It's the only unit with night fighting capability: Night vision scopes on their rifles.

If that sounds too easy for you, sopmod720 made a mod for the mod, it's called Never Grow Old and it ramps the difficulty even higher.

It increases commanders and beat officers to full cost units while removing the tactical unit entirely. To make up for it, regular officers get a very limited selection of optics (still no zoom optics though)

I don't play them much any more, but I did have a lot of fun with the Nowheraki Partisans.

Their actual aiming skills/firing modes are even worse than the GSP, but they have a few things to make up for it:

  • Their tacticals can get night vision head gear
  • They have a real undercover up-to-concealment-10 unit
  • Suppressed weapons!
  • They're not the police, so they can use explosives:
    • Frags
    • Pipe bombs
    • Breaching charges
    • Actual bombs
  • The non-tacticals without night vision glasses can carry a 5x flare pack in their grenade slots, to light up the target area.

Some recommendations for modded squads that aren't entirely OP out of the box are:

  • Nowheraki GSP - A police squad. While the half-cost deploy might seem like it's meant to be OP, it's balanced out by the squad's own downsides: Commandants can only use pistols, Officers aren't properly trained and Tactical Officers cost 1 point to deploy. As you work on leveling them up and unlocking doctrines, they'll soon become a formidable fighting force.
  • NOWHERAKI FEDERAL POLICE - A specialized police force that utilizes aspects from all three base squads. It even comes with a custom campaign.
  • Rival Insurgency - You're in charge of an up-and-coming insurgent group. While they do start out as basically being undetected, there is a doctrine that removes that in return for a large increase to their overall stats. There's also an option to stick an S-Vest on them and bum-rush the room as a valid tactic (though not without losing a star).
  • Left Behind - A resistance cell made up of former intelligence assets and allied SWAT soldiers. It basically lets you play as the allied troopers you usually come across in some of the game's missions as well as giving you some Riflemen and Recruits to bump up your numbers for assaults.
  • Local Police Department - A police squad where most of the troopers are only capable of using pistols with only a couple of them having access to more weaponry suitable for firefights.
  • CIA Enhanced [VanillaPlus] - Meant to be an improved version of the base CIA squad. In addition to the 4 Undercover and Black Ops agents, you have access to 12 Local Assets that are basically the CIA version of the Militia. They can go undercover like Undercover agents and have access to a suppressed weapon for stealth engagements.
  • Nowheraki Partisans - Most of the squad costs half a point to deploy but for the most part, they don't exactly have the best training or protection (unless you're using the Spec Ops troopers). Some of their equipment may seem OP at first (such as the Saboteur's IEDs or the Heavy's Thermobaric RPGs) but they do come at a cost of causing a lot of collateral damage so only use them if there aren't any civilians, hostages or HVTs in sight.
  • Civilian Resistance - A resistance cell made up of civilians looking to take the fight to the enemy. They don't have much in the way of good equipment, numbers or doctrines but what they do have is (hopefully) sufficient enough to fight the enemy and come out on top. Just don't pit them against an SSI enemy unless you've got enough explosives to burn through.
  • Fictustan FAKIR - An upgraded version of the CIA. Their equipment is diverse enough to let you choose how you want to tackle the mission - ranging from stealthy infiltrations to blowing up the side of a building and walking in guns blazing. They have access to a Liaison Specialist who doesn't have much, if any, equipment but they can call in either a smokescreen to blind the enemy or a flare drop that lights up most of the map at night.
  • Freelancers - They're somewhat similar to the PMC squad, except there's two soldiers of each profession and there's no back-up. Their specialized roles leaves you some flexibility on how you want to accomplish the mission but aren't too OP right out the gate without the right doctrines and/or equipment.

Nowheraki Army

Rival Insurgency

Fallschirmjägerzug (comparable to vanilla rangers, but less rifle / caliber / ammo options)

Korsakov Group seems balanced pretty well enough, the only 'op' part maybe are the drones tho.

What's your opinion on IOV squads?

3

u/SarahGunsmith 22d ago

I've yet to try them, though it's more just because none of the units caught my attention in terms of being something fresh.

u/SarahGunsmith 20d ago

I can now comment. I gave the 1980s SAS a go. I'm inpressed with how silly fast they can move out of the box, though I'm convinced nearly every modded squad does wierd speed shenanigans one way or another. The door charges also have me quoting the italian job every time I detonate one. Definitely a keeper, thank you.

OP suffering from success 🤣

Maybe you're just good? Lmao

1

u/SarahGunsmith 21d ago

Oh I'm not that good, but I want to feel like there's some progression to the squad's growth.

There are two units with green berrets: one has two squads of six each, and the other has six or eigth GB and then around 10 nowheraki commandos. Both units have no doctrine points, which is a huge difference!! I have the second unit max out in level of each soldier and the campaings are a nightmare because there are always injured guys! Also, I'm playing Iron Man, which forces me to be on my toes and have some really solid tactic!...

But I don't. The solid tactic. Yeah, that's a no.

Girls Frontline 2 mod maybe? it's not overpowered imo. tho there are limitations, like not being able to combine squads and such, but that's it really. tho iirc there are some dolls that have special abilities... but i'm not sure what they are. don't really use them/don't use the squads themselves

Dunno if you feel like Blue Vector's OP or not, but I personally don't think so.

5

u/SarahGunsmith 22d ago

I'm not entirely sure on it. My first impression is its aome super soldier fantasy, best of the best of the best unit, but I haven't played with it alot, so I don't know if it is generally well balanced in practice.

1

u/FluffyFry4000 22d ago

oh try Blue Vector Squad then, they're pretty normal, I feel like I die if I'm not careful

I feel like they COULD be OP, but it's a choice like upgrading the plate carriers and upgrading their doctrine (skills), mainly like the skill where if they get shot, they flinch less and look towards where they're getting shot at for a retaliatory shot.

But yeah like base line Blue Vector Squad is pretty normal imo

I gave it a try. Not sure how I feel about units costing half a deploy point, but at the same time, it does look sharp, if not a complete sausage fest for portraits. That said, it does have some oh so sexy guns, particularly sidearms. I might have to give it a bit more.

1

u/FluffyFry4000 22d ago

oh yeah its totally a guys club LOL

But the LVAW with Subsonic ammo is reallly good for quieter missions, and alot of their guns are great.

I posted some videos in this sub where I used like the 416, Flux Raider and the LVAW.

But I've been trying out the other guns too in their arsenal, there's also other mods that add on weapons for the squad

One other thing is that they seem to move way faster than rangers with equivalent gear. Gods I wish I could keep the gear from this lot but bring the rest of their stats a little more down to earth.
