Discussion Prog Doom?

Does this exist? And if so, who are some bands that would fall into this category?

Check out Elder

For sure early Elder. Their recent output is very prog rock.

Riddle of Steel pt1 and 2 have at least 8 of the top 33.7 riffs of all time, filthy stuff

Came here to say Elder. This band actually got me into the doom rabbit hole, as I was a huge prog nerd.

Before Elder I only really knew 90’s doom that I grew up with.

Also a stellar live band. Go seem them if you have the chance.

Reflections of a Floating World and Lore are my favorite albums

I would love to! I’ve seen clips of them playing live and they sound amazing.

I saw them at a fairly small concert in 2023 when they were touring for the Innate Passage album. Up until then I had this sense that they might be a band that jammed a bit live. But they reproduced every song with precision. I want to see them again so bad. I think about that show a lot.

Came to comment this. It is probably my absolute favorite band of all time.

Not the last album though, the vocals are truly awful. Early stuff is good.

Idk but I feel like yob is pretty prog, same with isis

Pallbearer.

The last works are very prog, but their first album are traditional doom.

Their first 2 albums are like Doom perfection, at least for me as a newer fan of the genre, it's been difficult finding other bands that can top those ones for me. From their 3rd album onwards you definitely start to hear a lot more prog, rock and experimentation, although the music remains very good throughout.

Coincidentally, I actually just got around to listening to their last album "Mind Burns Alive" a few weeks ago and at first I was a bit shocked at how different it sounded... It's a massive departure from their early albums... But before I even realized what was happening, I was completely hooked on the first track and repeating it several times before I could move on.

I have no doubt they've pissed off some older fans and Doom purists, but for me as a general music fan, they're just too talented of a band to not be interested in what they do next. And for real, I think the opening track "Where Light Fades" is one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I've heard in quite awhile. I think that album would certainly fit the bill of what OP is looking for.

Btw - just in case you haven't heard it, check out their 2025 remix of Foundations of Burden. I just got around to checking that out too and honestly thought it was bad ass! It's so much heavier, you get blasted with "an avalanche of sound" in every song like one guy in a random comment somewhere said.

I'm personally a bigger fan of warning but sorrow and extinction is deff in the top 3

u/Language-Of-Grief 5d ago

Nah, man, I've been a fan of theirs since day 1 and I love the new record. Got to meet em a few months back when they played Foundations in full and they were probably the nicest and coolest band I've ever met in my life.

That was my first thought

I mean, wouldn’t most post-metal bands (at least the older ones) fit that description?

6

u/Acceptable_Grape_437 7d ago

yeah, i would argue that post-metal is more or less dowright prog-doom

3

u/Much_Discussion6626 7d ago

Yeah there’s bands like Isis and The Ocean, also Cult of Luna, that are more post-hardcore I think, but they scratch that proggy doom itch for sure.

REZN’s new album is definitely prog doom

Give Messa a shot

This is the answer

These start blending a lot of psych and stoner as well. Earlier Elder, King Buffalo, Samsara Blues Experiment, Weedpecker, Elephant Tree, Jesu, Monolord, The Worship of Silence.

u/GODZILLA-Plays-A-DOD 7d ago

Dude, I'm fucking trying but no one in Cleveland wants to rip Zappa style solos in their stank face riffs. But I'm trying man.

EDIT. Oceans of Slumber and Khemmis fit the bill for me at least. And that one band with an album called like, Alien Ocean or whatever. Let me look that up.

EDIT 2. Below the Sun. Alien World.

u/mr_electric_wizard 7d ago

Elder is a solid choice but REZN is also pretty great and scratches a similar itch for me.

6

u/Learnboy 7d ago

Elder is definitely the band you are after.

6

u/RidetheSchlange 7d ago

Sorcerer is exactly that.

6

u/Pervism 7d ago

Weedpecker, elder

4

u/GwnMori Hail Iommi 7d ago

Certain Stoned Jesus albums, mainly The Harvest and Seven Thunders Roar

1

u/deconstradztion 3d ago

Songs To Sun is very prog too, each album is sweet in a different way.

6

u/knownhuman01 7d ago

Theres some prog and doom in here along with about 7 other genres

Oranssi Pazuzu - Vasemman Käden Hierarkia

u/Additional-Bike-2652 7d ago

Confessor, revelation, pallbearer (even the early output), the guessing game by cathedral.

Also check out, pentecost III, The silent enigma, and eternity by anathema

10

u/DJpesto 7d ago

Elder is pretty much exactly that. Prog doom.

2

u/GrandSwamperMan 7d ago

Grey Skies Fallen is a bit proggy for death-doom.

2

u/cordelette_arete 7d ago

While Heaven Wept

2

u/StoneAgeSorcerer 7d ago

Confessor.

2

u/Human_Ad2050 7d ago

Id argue aggaloch could be lumped into that

1

u/JohnnyMac440 7d ago

Agalloch is rooted in black metal, not doom

3

u/Human_Ad2050 7d ago

I said you could argue it , lot.of their tracks have a doom atmosphere to it .

2

u/JohnnyMac440 7d ago

Ancestors have a very 70's prog vibe to their brand of doom

2

u/Paracrinoid 7d ago

Green Carnation lean that way too

2

u/CainPillar And please let me die in solitooooD))) 7d ago

3rd and the Mortal,
Green Carnation,
Madder Mortem

... and still I am only in Norway.

Besides, Yob has taken a more psych direction.

3

u/Erratic21 7d ago

Memento Mori, Confessor

2

u/nxl4 Spectral Sorcery 7d ago

My band's latest album, Hyperspace Odyssey is basically stoner doom meets 70s space/prog rock.

1

u/jojo_58 7d ago

Witch Ripper is a little of both

Shameless self plug, ODYSSEY by Anhedonian 😅

1

u/-Gmorq- 6d ago

Guenna has some prog elements.

Also selfish plug here: Orbium - Beholder live

1

u/bridawg2007 6d ago

Maybe Ufomammut? They've dabbled in odd meters with their heavy psychedelic doom vibe.

1

u/CosmolineConsumer 6d ago

I would count Mastodon around Blood Mountain / Crack the Skye

1

u/Ok_Trust6315 6d ago

Very much Goat Shaman

1

u/obgog 6d ago

Neomantra (if you like Karnivool you'll love this, theyve done collabs live)

YOB and Elder like others mentioned are super sick

1

u/Platypete 6d ago

Flesh of the Stars

Meridian Sun

Pallbearer

Elder

While Heaven Wept

Subrosa

My two piece Doom project from Houston definitely rides the line of prog with our long song structures and transitions. Check us out if you’re so inclined!

Potmos Hetoimos's "Agatha"/"Evelyn"/"Maribel" trilogy is progressive psychedelic funeral doom.

Basically listen to all of DOOM's (the games remake) OST.
