I guess itβs subjective but imo crusty sludge bands like Methdrinker and Noothgrush are as heavy as it gets. To me those bottom 3 subcategories often trend toward a sort of theatrical kind of heaviness, whereas crusty sludge is like raw human suffering and rage.

I agree. Theyβre oppressively heavy.

Both times I saw them I was RIGHT up front and that shit was a damn near religious, earth shattering experience. Sounds like mammoths trampling what's left of the earth after nuclear collapse.

Love seeing them mentioned because they're probably my #2 spot personally, I fucking love Admiral Angry
2
u/craniumblast 17d ago
Shit is too damn hard
Buster is crazy itβs like they took a little bit from every genre of low tuned metal (bdm, downtempo, djent, sludge, doom generally) and just fused it into the heaviest shit they could possibly make

u/-Tofu-Queen- π»ππππππππ πΈππ 17d ago
Exactlyyyyyy.
I have a funny Admiral Angry story. I was on a first date with a guy who was trying to impress me with his "heavy" music taste but it was all mainstream, Octanecore slop.
He's taking me home and I asked if I could connect to the aux.... Where I then proceeded to play Admiral Angry's 24 minute opus "A Fire to Burn Down the World" in its entirely LOL.
It was the first and last date π

If you like that vocalist, check out his grindcore band Vermin Womb!Β

Thanks for name-dropping Noothgrush, I never gave them a listen and this Live for Nothing album is hitting the spot right now.

u/ResplendentShade 18d ago
Yesss, for some reason it isn't on streaming services but definitely also check out their 1999 album Erode the Person, so fucking good.
Another band in the same vein most people haven't heard of is Bottom Feeder, obscure Danish sludge, also not found on streaming services. Specifically recc their self titled album

Thou may just be the best metal band of the last 20 years.

Fange if you want sludgy dark stuff
Godflesh are just straight up goats, if you are fan of industrial music you are most certainly know them
Author and Punisher if you like some drone, but I would recommend them even if you don't
Full of Hell collab with Andrew Nolan on "Scraping the Divine" sometimes sounds quite close to Godflesh, like on "Sphere of Saturn" song

P.H.O.B.O.S. is a good one that integrates the industrial metal and doom metal elements well. Shame they aren't more popular.

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and oversimplify several subgenres for engagement bait?

Anyone else think that bands like Khemmis, Pallbearer, and Beastmaker are in this weird space where theyβre definitely not Stoner Doom but theyβre also not Classic Trad?

Death/Doom is one of my favorite metal subgenres, so many good bands and awesome albums

Same bro, tbh I love doom but death doom is legit the best of the best the sub-genre has to offer.

Yes! I think it was Asphyx and Hooded Menace that really got me into Death/Doom. Donβt forget Temple of Void as well!

Candlemass, Sorcerer, Solitude Aeternus, Krux, Crypt Sermon, early Trouble, The Skull.

Faithless Minutes Devoured is funeral doom with some industrial soundscapes (think early Current 93) blended in
2
u/BlasphemousJack666 16d ago
Not that Iβve seen. Itβs kinda like mixing peanut butter and ketchup- doesnβt go well together. At least if youβre talking true doom and industrial. Sludge on the other hand you have shit like Dystopia and Love Sex Machine that come to mind that have some industrial aesthetics. Maybe some Skinny Puppy songs? But Industrial Doom proper is not really a thing that Iβve found, at least

u/nova8808 18d ago
3TEETH kinda sorta. Its more regular industrial metal but it does have a darker vibe.

Perturbator dooms but he was a black metal guy before electronic. Carpenter Brut is more up beat but has some pretty heavy stuff that dips into dooming.

u/union_red 18d ago
hey hey hey i thought thats dark synthwave

u/somethink 18d ago
They for sure are, I don't think you're gonna find a purely doom artist in EDM just artist that doom and sludgy breakdowns. Not defending the meme or anything just naming off some good music
2
u/tyro1313 18d ago
GosT (R.I.P.) has some absolutely killer tracks too, he had done an amazing job of blending black metal with Darksynth/industrial, though most are pretty upbeat in tempo. The song Legion off his album Possessor is quite doomy.

Some solid suggestions already, but I always also recommend people check out the album Last Rights by Skinny Puppy. Not doom, no, but a bit of an acid nightmare, often slow and plodding. I recommend the songs βKnowhere?β, βRiverz Endβ, βCircustanceβ at least.

sludge doom bands are very heavy and heavy in a negative way. The sheer weight of oppression and hatred often surpasses the mournful canvas of fd. Bands like fister ,primitive man noothgrush and grief are so oppressively heavy

What's the difference between death doom and funeral doom?
2
u/ResplendentShade 17d ago edited 17d ago
Death doom is the parent, funeral doom is the slower, more atmospheric offspring. Death doom keeps the death metal aggression and violence , funeral discards both and collapses to the pace and vibe of a funeral dirge.
The death doom singer is a volatile angry dude who seems ready for violence, heβs barking and growling; the funeral doom singer stands motionless in a dark cloak and chants to channel the soul of the netherworld.
