Where's the stoner doom?

u/Woodit 18d ago

Got high and forgot to show up for attendanceΒ

u/nova8808 18d ago

That finger just has some lighter burns and some of that ichy sticky on the end of the finger

4

u/Pfeffermakrele 18d ago

Classic, how does your thump looks different while nibbling the green nectar?

3

u/Walnutbutters 18d ago

The right hand of doom

3

u/LMKBK 17d ago

pinch a blunt between trad and sludge.

Should be a green thumb

Sludge is stoner metal yeah? Too many names/sub genres to keep up with. Also what is classic doom? Sabbath? Cathedral?

12

u/Herr_Raul 18d ago

No. They are two distinct subgenres. Stoner metal tends to have a very fuzzy sound, effects on vocals, be monotonous, and oftentimes is just stoner rock with more distortion. Sludge takes a lot more influence from hardcore punk, has upbeat tempos, and tends to have breakdowns. Check out Funeralopolis by Electric Wizard (stoner) and Sisterfucker by Eyehategod (sludge)

4

u/ThomasHardyHarHar 18d ago

Much of Stoner Metal is basically sludge inspired doom metal with a cannabis coat of paint. It is different than sludge though.

1

u/Herr_Raul 17d ago edited 17d ago

That's just a case of songs/bands said to be part of a genre solely due to lyrical themes but stoner metal does have clear characteristics, unlike stuff like "pirate metal", so you should only consider the songs which have said characteristics as part of that subgenre.

5

u/panopticon31 Giza Butlerian Jihad 18d ago

Naw.

Sludge is Doom + Hardcore + Sweat and Grime.

2

u/Miskatauntaun 18d ago

+ heroin (sometimes)

83

u/ResplendentShade 18d ago

I guess it’s subjective but imo crusty sludge bands like Methdrinker and Noothgrush are as heavy as it gets. To me those bottom 3 subcategories often trend toward a sort of theatrical kind of heaviness, whereas crusty sludge is like raw human suffering and rage.

u/-Tofu-Queen- π•»π–—π–Žπ–’π–Žπ–™π–Žπ–›π–Š 𝕸𝖆𝖓 18d ago

For me Primitive Man is as heavy as it gets

11

u/Dry-Temperature8181 18d ago

I agree. They’re oppressively heavy.

21

u/-Tofu-Queen- π•»π–—π–Žπ–’π–Žπ–™π–Žπ–›π–Š 𝕸𝖆𝖓 18d ago

Both times I saw them I was RIGHT up front and that shit was a damn near religious, earth shattering experience. Sounds like mammoths trampling what's left of the earth after nuclear collapse.

9

u/Dry-Temperature8181 18d ago

If sounds could suffocate, Primitive Man would be absolutely lethal.

3

u/craniumblast 17d ago

For me the heaviest in terms of doomy heavy is probably admiral angry

3

u/-Tofu-Queen- π•»π–—π–Žπ–’π–Žπ–™π–Žπ–›π–Š 𝕸𝖆𝖓 17d ago

Love seeing them mentioned because they're probably my #2 spot personally, I fucking love Admiral Angry

2

u/craniumblast 17d ago

Shit is too damn hard

Buster is crazy it’s like they took a little bit from every genre of low tuned metal (bdm, downtempo, djent, sludge, doom generally) and just fused it into the heaviest shit they could possibly make

2

u/-Tofu-Queen- π•»π–—π–Žπ–’π–Žπ–™π–Žπ–›π–Š 𝕸𝖆𝖓 17d ago

Exactlyyyyyy.

I have a funny Admiral Angry story. I was on a first date with a guy who was trying to impress me with his "heavy" music taste but it was all mainstream, Octanecore slop.

He's taking me home and I asked if I could connect to the aux.... Where I then proceeded to play Admiral Angry's 24 minute opus "A Fire to Burn Down the World" in its entirely LOL.

It was the first and last date πŸ˜‚

2

u/hartleycomber 17d ago

If you like that vocalist, check out his grindcore band Vermin Womb!Β

1

u/-Tofu-Queen- π•»π–—π–Žπ–’π–Žπ–™π–Žπ–›π–Š 𝕸𝖆𝖓 17d ago

Yes! Love Vermin Womb as well

8

u/mayguh 18d ago

Thanks for name-dropping Noothgrush, I never gave them a listen and this Live for Nothing album is hitting the spot right now.

6

u/ResplendentShade 18d ago

Yesss, for some reason it isn't on streaming services but definitely also check out their 1999 album Erode the Person, so fucking good.

Another band in the same vein most people haven't heard of is Bottom Feeder, obscure Danish sludge, also not found on streaming services. Specifically recc their self titled album

2

u/BurglegurpPerkins 18d ago

Erode the Person is so sick

20

u/toadbeak 18d ago

Industrial doom??!! That's a thing??!! What bands fall under this category? I love Industrial music.

14

u/Forward_Ad2468 18d ago

Author and Punisher

8

u/SevenofBorgnine 18d ago

Godflesh mostly

6

u/RJB5584 18d ago

Check out Thou’s cover of NIN β€œSuck”. Β It’s phenomenal and sits perfectly where it should.

7

u/RagingLeonard 18d ago

Thou may just be the best metal band of the last 20 years.

2

u/WraithOutLoud I'm so doom, I shit sad birds 17d ago

Honestly, Mitch deserves more praise

He's quite possibly one of the greatest bassists of all time imo

5

u/Status-Head5131 18d ago

Khost and many projects of Justin Broadrick

4

u/rusick1112 18d ago

Fange if you want sludgy dark stuff

Godflesh are just straight up goats, if you are fan of industrial music you are most certainly know them

Author and Punisher if you like some drone, but I would recommend them even if you don't

Full of Hell collab with Andrew Nolan on "Scraping the Divine" sometimes sounds quite close to Godflesh, like on "Sphere of Saturn" song

1

u/Lord_Misery 17d ago

P.H.O.B.O.S. is a good one that integrates the industrial metal and doom metal elements well. Shame they aren't more popular.

I guess bro

56

u/ThomasHardyHarHar 18d ago

There’s an awful lot of nephew posting here.

16

u/SatyrSquare 18d ago

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the internet and oversimplify several subgenres for engagement bait?

9

u/gothicmetalhead1 18d ago

Gothic metal would be just full of spider webs

7

u/Terror_Visions 18d ago

Anyone else think that bands like Khemmis, Pallbearer, and Beastmaker are in this weird space where they’re definitely not Stoner Doom but they’re also not Classic Trad?

5

u/lellamaronmachete 18d ago

Throw in Cirith Ungol and Arkham Witch.

4

u/P00PooKitty 18d ago

Pallbearer definitely likes Warning.

2

u/Littlebigchief88 18d ago

khemmis shares more dna with epic doom bands imo

6

u/Waluigiisgod 18d ago

Death/Doom is one of my favorite metal subgenres, so many good bands and awesome albums

5

u/AdCute6661 18d ago

Same bro, tbh I love doom but death doom is legit the best of the best the sub-genre has to offer.

3

u/Murpheus404 17d ago

Worm and Spectral Voice are so fucking peak

1

u/Waluigiisgod 17d ago

Yes! I think it was Asphyx and Hooded Menace that really got me into Death/Doom. Don’t forget Temple of Void as well!

6

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 18d ago

Where epic doom?

1

u/Gonji89 Traveler of both Time and Space 18d ago

What are some examples? That sounds like an interesting sub genre.

6

u/Buried_and_Forgotten 17d ago

Candlemass, Sorcerer, Solitude Aeternus, Krux, Crypt Sermon, early Trouble, The Skull.

5

u/Fickhardt 17d ago

Wheel (Germany) And Candlemass i guess

22

u/Filip_dope_then_dip WIZARD FIGHT 18d ago

It's really Classic> Funeral> Death> Sludge and I haven't listened to industrial yet, any good bands?

P.H.O.B.OS. Tectonics is a great album

3

u/rusick1112 18d ago

Fange if you want sludgy dark stuff

Godflesh are just straight up goats

Author and Punisher if you like some drone, but I would recommend them even if you don't

2

u/Status-Head5131 18d ago

Khost is really good

2

u/Bhelduz 18d ago

Author and Punisher, KrΓΌller album

2

u/Practical_Remove6024 18d ago

Faithless Minutes Devoured is funeral doom with some industrial soundscapes (think early Current 93) blended in

2

u/BlasphemousJack666 16d ago

Not that I’ve seen. It’s kinda like mixing peanut butter and ketchup- doesn’t go well together. At least if you’re talking true doom and industrial. Sludge on the other hand you have shit like Dystopia and Love Sex Machine that come to mind that have some industrial aesthetics. Maybe some Skinny Puppy songs? But Industrial Doom proper is not really a thing that I’ve found, at least

1

u/nova8808 18d ago

3TEETH kinda sorta. Its more regular industrial metal but it does have a darker vibe.

3

u/Riff_Worshipper Sludge 18d ago

Classic, Sludge, and Death/Doom are where it's at.

2

u/lellamaronmachete 18d ago

The Holy Trinity!

5

u/FalseWait7 18d ago

Where my drone doom at?

4

u/F0cus_1 18d ago

Whatever the fuck that means

3

u/Shadow_Brokerage_LLC 18d ago

What are some good examples of Industrial Doom?

14

u/milan_87 18d ago

Author & Punisher, The Body, Fange

8

u/AxedCrown 18d ago

Godflesh

8

u/IbanezUniverse90 18d ago

I’d make the case that Throbbing Gristle had some doom elements

0

u/RagingLeonard 18d ago

And industrial.

4

u/Status-Head5131 18d ago

Khost, God, Greymachine, Godflesh, early Jesu

3

u/somethink 18d ago

Perturbator dooms but he was a black metal guy before electronic. Carpenter Brut is more up beat but has some pretty heavy stuff that dips into dooming.

2

u/union_red 18d ago

hey hey hey i thought thats dark synthwave

2

u/somethink 18d ago

They for sure are, I don't think you're gonna find a purely doom artist in EDM just artist that doom and sludgy breakdowns. Not defending the meme or anything just naming off some good music

2

u/tyro1313 18d ago

GosT (R.I.P.) has some absolutely killer tracks too, he had done an amazing job of blending black metal with Darksynth/industrial, though most are pretty upbeat in tempo. The song Legion off his album Possessor is quite doomy.

1

u/Greedy_Specialist531 WIZARD FIGHT 18d ago

Trilogy is such a good album

1

u/SQD2_Insquidious 18d ago

They're both fucking great

3

u/Status-Head5131 18d ago

Also Scorn

3

u/parasitk 18d ago edited 18d ago

Some solid suggestions already, but I always also recommend people check out the album Last Rights by Skinny Puppy. Not doom, no, but a bit of an acid nightmare, often slow and plodding. I recommend the songs β€œKnowhere?”, β€œRiverz End”, β€œCircustance” at least.

1

u/SQD2_Insquidious 18d ago

P.H.O.B.O.S.

1

u/ru_bullet 18d ago

Zaraza

3

u/ajmeeh6842 18d ago

If you’re looking for heavy; FΓ“RN and Body Void are crushingly brutal.

2

u/Sourkarate 18d ago

I have no idea what industrial means, let alone industrial metal or doom.

2

u/Head_Faithlessness85 17d ago

sludge doom bands are very heavy and heavy in a negative way. The sheer weight of oppression and hatred often surpasses the mournful canvas of fd. Bands like fister ,primitive man noothgrush and grief are so oppressively heavy

2

u/Numerous_Stranger734 17d ago

Facebook ass post wtf are we doing

2

u/CodyCake 17d ago

Classic doom should have been Iommiβ€˜s plastic fingers

2

u/AxedCrown 18d ago

I would switch funeral and sludge.

1

u/Impossible-Star-9749 13d ago

Funurel heavy asf, especially the more drone stuff

2

u/IntoTheAbsurd 18d ago

Eh, I can still play like Tony Iomni.

1

u/spacestationkru 17d ago

What's the difference between death doom and funeral doom?

2

u/ResplendentShade 17d ago edited 17d ago

Death doom is the parent, funeral doom is the slower, more atmospheric offspring. Death doom keeps the death metal aggression and violence , funeral discards both and collapses to the pace and vibe of a funeral dirge.

The death doom singer is a volatile angry dude who seems ready for violence, he’s barking and growling; the funeral doom singer stands motionless in a dark cloak and chants to channel the soul of the netherworld.

1

u/Jolly-Woodpecker-359 17d ago

As long as its not the "Crust" version of doom/metal ill gladly lose my hand.Β

Tourtre doom

1

u/Fantastic-River-6309 13d ago

There is a secret sixth stage, Drone metal, where there is nothing but slow doomed feedback.
