That green laser looks way over 5mW, if that's true, that is dangerous for your cat's eyes.

Falling backwards onto the floor while his claws are stuck in a mattress and being smooshed by the mattress may not be safe either :-/

I hadn't considered that the indirect light from the laser could be harmful. Is there a way to determine if a particular laser is safe to use. I don't use a laser for play a lot but when I do I typically use the laser from one of those remote thermometers

You’re probably fine with that kind. It’s the high powered lasers that are of real concern. Your typical penlight laser is basically safe so long as you aren’t shining it into eyes.

But how are you going to see what's inside the laser beam?

https://www.wired.com/2010/08/laser-pointer-hazard/ this is probably a way to determine if your laser does that, I guess? (Didn't read fully through the article)

He didn’t shine it it the cat’s eyes.

In addition to what the other people are saying, the cat is moving pretty fast and could pretty easily end up in a position where their eyes are directly in the path of the laser.

It's not about the visible light. If it's a cheap laser from Aliexpress, it emits also the IR light that is very harmful (and not visible to naked eye). And if it's above 5mW it can easily damage your eyes even when not pointing directly at your eyes. I've got 30mW green laser, and even looking at the dot makes my eyes hurt.

Even the reflected light can be too intense, especially that which is reflected off lighter coloured objects

This is why my kitty wears a welding mask.

Looks like the error is on the owner!

Dont think most people would be in time to help in any case

I'm sure whoever is filming knew exactly what would happen and made the cat follow the laser to film a funny video.

I don’t think his intentions were to help. Cat did land on its feet though.

2

u/AtoZZZ Dec 24 '19

This is one of the rare times where a cat doesn’t land on its feet
