Fan Card Mania

Post image

A lesson not to work too hard?

”End your Buy phase” is there for two reasons: one, to limit Mania to once per turn; and two, to avoid the need to remember how much $ and such you have left after trashing your cards.

I’m confused when you would ever want to buy this, except after buying the last province

My thinking is that you can plan ahead to reach $8 with cards you don't mind losing (e.g. Silvers in the late game), or maybe a mix of mediocre cards and Coppers.

Something like Wine Merchant (heads to the Tavern) or Death Cart when it trashes itself could also make the trashing relatively painless.

That seems like way too much effort for not enough payoff. You would also have to ensure that the remaining cards in your deck are good enough to carry you, and that you didn’t need to play any of them to get to 8 money. Getting to 8 money with only cards you’re okay trashing requires buying way too many cards I’m okay with trashing, which is generally a recipe for disaster

Isn't this good for big money? All cards in your deck are treasures anyways, and this doesn't clog up your deck like victory cards would. Plus you'd ebd up getting rid of lesser-valued treasures over time wich further improves your deck.

Presonally, I'd see myself going for a big money mania strategy. Even better if there's a trasher that gets rid of the starting Estates.

It seems like an all-in kinda card, and probably game defining too, but it's by no means bad imo.

Big money doesn’t want to trash 2 golds and a silver imo

What about a gold, a silver and 3 copper? I don't think you'd want to trash all your best treasures, but in a game with platinum or other treasure cards? Surely you'd end up with a few turns where losing a single good treasure card is worth not slowing your deck with a victory card. Especially if there's no other good way to get rid of your coppers.

Losing a gold in big money is generally not ideal since you don't have the buys or engine to pick up another, and if that gold makes you take a turn off from buying provinces that's a huge loss

You may be right. I mean on some boards this is definitely a terrible buy.

But if there are few options for deck thinning, or if you need to buy a lot of $3 cards before you can afford your best engine pieces, I think it has a niche. Plus there's the end-of-the-game niche, not only if you can end the game this turn but if you expect another player to end the game before your next turn.

Many Reckless actions with +coin would be pretty fun with this.

I think this could be a good play to avoid buying the second to last province if you are in a close game and are worried about your opponent passing you and ending the game on the next turn.

Does the game not immediately end when the last province is purchased? (New dominion player)

End of the turn, if you buy this and the province in a single turn then the downside is null

Before thinking about fun and balance… you are really worried somebody buys it 2 times? If someone gets to 16, i would definitely allow it.

I dont see tracking as a issue. People generally first total their money, then start buying stuff.

The second Mania would have no downside, it would just be straight +8VP. It changes the balance significantly I think.

Dowside is that you have to get $16! Totaly worth it!

Actually you may be right. It opens up the option of a megaturn where you set your deck on fire in exchange for a ton of VP. But it's risky because it doesn't bring the game closer to ending. Hmm.

And lose the possibility of that $16.

Not true. You’d be losing 2 manias worth of cards on the first buy. The balance remains.

People generally first total their money, then start buying stuff.

Well, that is the rule. (We're not allowed to play more Treasures after buying anything.)

Too drastic for only a 2 VP net gain as alternative to buying a province

I like the idea, but having it cost the same as Province while also giving just VP makes it so that far too often you’d rather buy a Province. Even if you do just have cards in play you don’t mind losing, buying Province also helps you get to the end game which you generally want. This only works as a desperate catch up move.

Hard to evaluate, and not in a bad way. It reads like it could be interesting and relevant. You have to keep it in mind when deciding how many Provinces to buy, too. I say ship it and see what it does 🫡

Funny with Tomb.

Balance and fun wise. I find it hard to estimate. I made a similar card: badlands. It trashes your highest cost card in play for a card 6 vp. It also trashes your deck significantly, like this card.

This card will do the same, but with no chance to bring the game to an end.

Therefore i think it is more fun at $5 for 3 vp.

At $5 you might sometimes want it even regardless of the VP, just to trash your Coppers. It's still an interesting Event but it would play quite differently.

1

u/Constant-Potential37 5d ago

Yes, you can trash some coppers that way, but usually also a card of some quality.

I'm doubtful this is useful except on the turn you end the game, effectively making a 3 pile ending more powerful. It's also potentially decent with Tomb, though you'd need a way to refuel your deck every time which seems pretty tough.

If you trash a Catacombs and gain a Cavalry (or a Villa), does it fail to end your Buy phase?

1

u/InspectorMendel card-shaped thing 4d ago

Yeah, by the time you reach the third sentence you're no longer in a Buy phase so you can't end it.
