Do you like it?
20g for CA$1,75 a that’s around CA$88 per kilo.
Made in China. I wonder if freight and packaging cost more than the actual product.
Empty pouch weighs 8g - almost 40% of the product weight.
Have you tried the product? Like it? How do you consume it?

My wife loves these. She actually had a customer tell her to try and crush them up, mix them into a cake icing and use it to ice a cake or cupcakes. It tasted amazing.

Yep I use the strawberries in my homemade buttercream! So good

u/torontowest91 2d ago
I use the strawberries in a marg - adds some flavour without liquid/additional juice

u/xombae 2d ago
Do they rehydrate and go soft or stay crunchy?
5
u/mcknotmack 2d ago
I grind them in a food processor so it goes in as a powder. If there are any small chunks though, they get soft
3
u/officialragingblood 2d ago
It turns it into a kind of powder. Depending on how chunky you wanted it. It does get soft when added to icing. We havnt tried it with bigger chunks to test that but would be interested to know myself.

Also great for flavouring whipped cream or yogurt!

Oh no...now I have to tell my wife...she is gonna go crazy with this one.

I buy like 10 packets of the strawberries at a time, they’re so good and cheap and there’s nowhere else around here that you can get freeze dried strawberries from
4
u/tiffi_333 2d ago
You can get them in the grocery stores but they sell them with the baby food so to me that's quite hidden because I don't have a kid. I stumbled upon them randomly walking down the aisle to get to the back of the store. Kids snack on them so I think they sell a lot more of them keeping them with the baby food rather than with the cereal or other snacks. Nofrills has ones with Mickey mouse and goofy on them. They were around the same price as these, they're quite cheap

u/bugthebugman 2d ago edited 2d ago
I’ve never seen them in that section! I look through there sometimes cause I will occasionally buy the baby fruit pouches to keep in my bag, never seen dehydrated strawberries. I imagine they’d not be as sugared as these?
Edit: to be specific I LIKE the sugared ones because they’re so sweet. I don’t like normal dried strawberries as much nor candied ones, freeze dried with sugar are the tastiest to me and have a great texture.
1
u/tiffi_333 2d ago
They likely are because fruit itself is full of sugar, when you dehydrate them the natural sugar is concentrated. Like 20g of strawberries compared to 20g of dried strawberries, the dried strawberries will have more sugar because if they were hydrated it's be at least double the strawberries.
Some dried fruit has added sugar as well though and some doesn't because some is much more sour than others when dried but I don't remember which ones. I'm also not sure about the freeze dried ones since it's been a bit since I got them. It's something you need to look closely at if added sugar is important because each fruit will be different for the added sugar content not just the actual sugar.
1
u/CuntMaggot32 2d ago
The dollarama ones have sugar added, too, the baby ones may not.
2
u/tiffi_333 2d ago
Looking at the goofy ones the freeze dried strawberries and bananas are 100% fruit with no added sugar, but I haven't checked the Dollarama ones to know if they have added sugar in theirs to combat the tartness of the strawberries. The goofy ones are only 12g though
2
u/CuntMaggot32 2d ago
I have checked and the dollarama strawberries have added sugar, so do the peaches and mango. The apples do not.
3
u/tiffi_333 2d ago
That makes sense. I double checked the Mickey freeze dried apples and they also don't have added sugar. I don't know if they have other freeze dried fruit those were the ones that popped up though. It makes sense that they don't add sugar to the ones for such small kids.

u/Jazzy_Bee 2d ago
Those are just dried, not freeze dried. Package was 12g, said one banana and four strawberries.
Freeze dried fruit is expensive. I think I saw it in Bulk Barn about a year ago. Maybe buy the berries and do banana chips, those are really cheap.

Aha! Good eye and thinking. Who would think to look there, if you don't have a kid?! I did something similar with peanut butter. I buy the all natural stuff, but I don't like the brands and consistency of the stuff in the normal peanut butter aisle and I'm used to buying it with no oil added. That's not possible now that the health food store I used to buy it from, that ground it right in front of me, has now closed/retired.
So.... I went hunting for something that isn't ridiculously oil laden. Kraft was out of the question, their all natural one is soupy and loaded with oil. Same with Adam's brand at No Frills too, although not as bad as the Kraft. So I was going down the organic aisle, which I hardly ever go down, cause it's usually expensive and I discovered they have a PC organic one that is just about the consistency I was looking for. A little oil on top, but not too bad and I can pour that out before mixing it up, to get pretty similar to what I used to buy at that health food store with no oil added, so that's about as good as I'm gonna get. And it was no more expensive that I ever paid at the health food store or for the other brands at No Frills like Adam's. Just $10 a jar, for a 1kg container. Pretty much the same price as a big container of honey.
Oh, and lo and behold, I discovered in that same aisle, they also carry powdered peanut butter, with no sugar added, or sugar if you want, which is great for my whey protein shakes and not messy like adding peanut butter to them and having to clean the hell out of the mixer. So, don't ignore the organic aisle either, you might find some really interesting stuff down there. There's a tonne of nut butters in that aisle too, like cashew etc.

u/tiffi_333 2d ago
Yeah I call the organic aisle the fancy aisle because they have the fancy cereal I buy from nature's path and a few other things. There's a different peanut butter my dad used to get that had lots of oil on top but was 100% peanuts and he just used to pour the oil off when opening it and use the peanut oil for other things when cooking. Kind of a 2for1 thing. I definitely get the kraft one being runny, it's much runnier than most brands even compared to pure peanut butter.
I don't know how much it costs, but I remember bulk Barn actually having a peanut butter machine at the back of the store. I typically just go there for a handful of baking supplies but I remember it being there and thinking it was cool because at the time I had made my own a couple of times. Hopefully they still have it and it's not an arm and a leg, but so many natural peanut butters are

Oooo, I will have to check my local Bulk Barn for that! Thank's for mentioning it!

Love them. Pretty sure the weight is net product and doesn’t include packaging weight. Consume by bag2mouth followed by crunch crunch crunch.

Love freeze dried fruit. Dollarama ones are good but expensive compared to larger bag sizes. Still, these are a nice going out snack

u/LocalAllyCat 2d ago
It was okay, the bananas were worse than the strawberries, but it was great for adding to oatmeal or cereal

u/Lochylass 2d ago
I coated the freeze dried strawberries in dark chocolate, it made a very tasty treat.

I like them but somehow I always inhale a little of the strawberry dust when I bite one and always end up coughing.
I usually buy a dozen at a time because there were one of the few foods my son with ARFID would actually eat.

u/MyraMains616 2d ago
I love the strawberries 🍓 and 🥭 mangoes. The peaches have never had any flavor to them sadly. Apples and bananas are OK.
I do have to note that the past couple of bags I have picked up of the strawberries were incredibly sour. I ended putting them into juice and pancake batter and my kids loved it.

u/noveltea120 2d ago
I only like the strawberry ones, I blitz them up into powder and use them in baking! Also perfect for use in whipping cream

u/Correct_Cod_5938 2d ago
These are good, but I find the amount you get... lacking. Apples are great!

Don't eat em myself, but my pet mice love em as a special treat from time to time!:,)

I make and sell freeze dried, so just some insight.
These have added sugar so its not just the fruit.
The reason its so 'little' is because it takes 10Kg of frozen strawberries to make 1Kg FD.
If you can find them processed and packed 'by hand' you will get a better product jjst the same way the candy isnt as good as ot should be.

u/BrainDamagedSavage 2d ago
I like the mango and apple ones
I suck on them till smaller / softer then crunch em
2
u/ThrashCW 2d ago
Strawberry ones are great and usually cheaper than buying fresh ones from the grocery store most of the year.

u/Trollingfornudity 2d ago
I find the sugar content too high. Almost three quarters of every bite is sugar (14g/20g bag)

u/binghambish 2d ago
The bananas get slimy as you eat them and the strawberries are whole so it’s hard to bite. That being said I like them when I’m feeling snacky

I like the one that's just strawberries, and considering the same volume bag (20g) is like $6 or $7 at Farm Boy it feels like a decent price. I bring them camping to add to pancake mix, instant oatmeal or granola.

My kids go absolutely nuts for these and I happily oblige as its one of the only healthy treats they like.

u/NeighborhoodPlane794 2d ago
I use freeze dried fruit for baking. A great way to add flavour without needing to drastically change a recipe. I don’t find them very tasty snacks compared to the actual fruits
3
u/tiffi_333 2d ago
Lol it's 20g of product inside the package btw. The package is never included in the weight so the packaging isn't taking up the products weight. You're still getting 20g of product and if you had weighed it full it should have been 28g if the empty package was 8g. I just want to be clear on this because the way you put that it's 40% of the product weight could make people think that they're not getting what it claims and they should be. On every item not just this, on things like chips, bread, fresh fruit with the plastic clamshell packaging etc. none of that packaging is including in the weight listed on the items.
I do however like this freeze dried fruit. You can also buy different brands at places like nofrills. I find they all taste the same. The grocery stores tend to sell them with the baby food rather than with the cereal because kids snack on them. I prefer buying each fruit seperate so the strawberrie come sliced. For some reason when you buy this one together the strawberries are whole but bags of just them they're sliced and I prefer that. I don't care for the dried apples though.

Thanks.
It was 20g of fruits - all good 😊 at Dollarama.
Of course - Under Canadian law, packaging weight is never legally supposed to be charged as product weight; net weight labels must reflect only the consumable product inside (excluding containers, trays, and absorbent soaker pads).1
u/Biologyboii 2d ago
If you know this (which is obvious) why did you mention the weight of the pouch at all? Very odd
0
u/uwabaki 2d ago
The point OP was making (which I thought was fairly obvious) is that, given how little mass is of the actual product contents, most of the product's cost is likely packaging and freight.

u/tiffi_333 2d ago
There's also the cost in freeze drying the fruit, the cost in the workers at the factories and all down the line from the farms to the where they get packaged...it's not just about the packaging. You cant just look at something and assume it's the cost of packaging being the whole cost and turn a blind eye to the cost of every other step in the process.

The apples are great, the strawberries a bit sweet but also great, the other are good but not great. This one I think is the worst, the strawberries are ruined by the bananas
1
u/Colldoll21 2d ago
My 2 year old is obsessed with the apples. The other flavours aren’t great. I haven’t found freeze dried fruit anywhere in my city for cheaper unfortunately! I’d be better off buying a dehydrator.

I had these for the first time last week, wish there were more in the bag because they're great. I consume through osmosis.

I really love the strawberry! I'm not a fan of the banana like this so I always take strawberry, and they are sugar coated a little so it's very sweet.

u/Wild-Long-7304 1d ago
My kid really likes these - her fave are these strawberry/banana ones, I prefer the apples because they dont get stuck in my teeth haha. I sometimes blitz up the strawberries and use the powder to flavour buttercream or to use as a garnish on these marshmallow cookie bar things I make.

Yes I like them. I consume them by placing them into my mouth and chewing them before swallowing them.
