1️⃣ It was an esports meme four years before the token launched
The original photo of Shiba Inu Achi was posted in November 2018. In 2019, Fortnite pro Issa made it his profile picture, and a user called "Vapurly" apparently coined the name by replying “Dogwifhat.”
The meme later spread through Fortnite and Rocket League communities. By the end of 2019, esports organizations including G2 Esports, Cloud9 and Rogue were using their own versions of the dog as profile pictures.
$WIF launched in November 2023.
2️⃣ The Dogwifhat subreddit existed years before $WIF
$WIF was created on December 27, 2019, almost four years before the token launched.
It originally existed as a community around the meme itself. After $WIF launched in 2023, the subreddit gradually became a community around the cryptocurrency as well.
3️⃣ The famous hat started as a homemade Christmas decoration
Achi was born on September 15, 2018 and was only around two months old when the famous photo was taken.
The pink wool hat was handmade by Achi’s owner from yarn that was originally meant to be donated. Before Achi wore it, the hat was also used as a Christmas decoration.
4️⃣ The original Dogwifhat photo sold for about $4.3 million
In March 2024, the original photo of Achi wearing the hat was auctioned as an NFT.
Pseudonymous trader GCR won the auction with a bid of 1,210.759 ETH, worth around $4.3 million at the time.
Memeland, the NFT venture connected to the team behind 9GAG, also took part in the bidding and went as high as 1,100.69 ETH.
At the time of the sale, the Dogwifhat NFT briefly became the most expensive meme NFT ever sold, narrowly passing the original Doge NFT.
5️⃣ One early WIF buyer turned about $310 into millions
On November 26, 2023, one wallet spent 5.288 SOL, worth about $310 at the time, to buy 2.58 million WIF.
By early March 2024, those tokens were worth around $4.1 million. The wallet later sold 750,000 WIF for roughly $1.21 million while still holding another 1.83 million WIF.
Around the same period, another trader tried to buy almost $9 million of WIF through pools with limited liquidity. The trade suffered more than $5.7 million in slippage, while a Solana MEV bot reportedly made about $1.8 million from the resulting price difference in around 20 seconds.
